Takes control of misprinted number
(old news - 06:30PM Monday Dec 03 2007)
tags: business · hardware · Oddities
Last week Linksys made headlines when one of their product manuals accidentally directed users to a phone sex line. We've been chatting with Cisco's Karen Sohl about the incident, and according to Sohl, it was a mistake by Linksys, and not the fault of Circuit City:
Circuit City should not be blamed for this incident. Linksys unintentionally failed to change the contact information on the materials in the box of the WRH54G when the units were shipped to the US for the special Black Friday sale. It not our retail partners fault for the Linksys error. Linksys is currently finding a solution to this issue and apologize for any inconvenience or embarrassment this has caused to our customers. In the meantime we are instructing customers who require support on this product to call the correct number at: (800) 326-7114.
The Indian number, when called from the U.S. without the proper prefix, directed users to the adult chat line. Sohl told us this morning that Cisco/Linksys has since acquired the line, and callers now hear a recorded Linksys message -- which may annoy those who were looking for high-speed action of another variety.

They could have had the phone company that is serving that number issue the sex line company a new number (ie: Just switch the sex line's number) and hang a message on the old number apologizing for the error and saying "Press 1 for Linksys" and "Press 2 for Sex Line" and upon a response redirect to the correct number. Alternately, the message can give the correct 2 numbers and say "Hit 1 to repeat the numbers.

Re: Seized??

Maybe.....but why cause another businesses customers unneeded grief? There customers should be connected without issue, at the number they know and have been dialing all along.

Re: Seized??

I have seen an international organization that has a website go through an update recently and one major nation that is not yet updated with a link to their national site is India. Coincidence? Maybe not.

Also, it seems to me that it is good business for Cisco to take the blame for the phone number problem rather than hurt Circuit City or any other retail seller.

Do you have any idea how much that number would cost Cisco if it were my phone sex number? Think 7 figures...

Seized or bought it from the company operating the hotline. I'm sure it cost quite a bit.

They could have simply coughed up a bunch of cash to acquire (as in buy) it,

Thats true. On another note, I like how the front page story was changed from "seized" to "acquired". Which is it?

Oh no it was not "seized". It was handed over to Cisco like a hot potato! Most likey close to free. Once the 800# went viral and the sex-op got tons of calls with nobody signing up for their "service" and generating those 1 minute minimum bills (business rates are billed in 6 second increments -- the shortest "tick" a typical central office switch can record a time duration), that was all they wrote.

Once they checked their online useage against credit card billing, they either would have (1) disconnected the phone number or (2) call Cisco and say Lets Make A Deal

No seizure needed here. They drove straight to Tasman Drive in Santa Clara (CA) and waited in the lobby with the silver platter (RespOrg release form) on their lap!

...and probably the last week's usage bill saying "purdy pluheeze?!?"

FUBARs Happen

And it doesn't get any dumber than the incident in question. At worst, it belongs in the D'Oh! files. I can think of a million other consumer issues I'd rather be incensed about before I'd get prickly about a 900# screw up.

Re: FUBARs Happen

I'm only going to buy Linksys from now on. More companies would do well to learn from this particular brand of 'end user support'

Banks, Insurance, and Phone companies come to mind right away. I mean, if you're going to get jerked around anyways, you might as well get really jerked around and enjoy it.

Common occurrence

This is kind of like those who buy expired domains. These sex operators buy out blocks of 800 number just for this purpose. There was even an occurrence of them using a number that formerly belong to a woman's battering hotline.

I've seen this happen before... with Adelphia.

Adelphia cable launched a new customer service number, 888-683-1000 several years ago.

Many of the customer handouts like price lists and channel line-ups I saw from Adelphia right after that listed 800-683-1000 for customer service.

800-683-1000 was a sex line. 888-683-1000 was customer support. I know because I called them both.

About a week after I saw a customer report it in the local office, Adelphia had taken over the 800-683-1000. So it had both 888 and 800 683-1000.

Damn, I wanted a LinkSex router

I wanted to plug my ethernet cable into one of their "hot" ports. I wanted to shoot my packets over their Cat 5 cables.

I wanted to "flash" the very "firm" ware up to a later firmware. I want to change the antennas' position to missionary.

I wanted to....

LOL!!!! Back to our regularly scheduled program.

Bravo!

I commend Cisco and Karen Sohl for not only the prompt action to address this oversight but also for being so forthright about it!

Hotlink

@verizon.net

Oooh, yeah!

I just got off.

From the Linksys hot line.

At least I think I dialed the right number.

And baby, it was!

Thank you, Linksys!

Time to ease back and have a smoke.
