Kansas City Will Also Get Google Wi-Fi
Hotspots Being Set up at 400 Locations
by Karl Bode Monday 13-Aug-2012 tags: competition · wireless · alternatives · consumers · Google · wireless
In addition to deploying 1 Gbps connections across Kansas (some of them free for libraries and municipal buildings), the Kansas City Star says Google is also promising the city Wi-Fi throughout the area. The company says that in apparent addition to some of the fiber lines being run to "anchor institutions," they're providing free Wi-Fi access via around 400 hotspots scattered around the city. The actual locations still need to be determined by officials in officials in Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo. Google has a little experience on this front, having offered Wi-Fi in their hometown of Mountain View, California since 2006.

LOL. Yes, if you are the only one on the public AP and within 100 feet of the AP. Neither of which is likely on a public hotspot.

Re: Sweet

I'll tether to my phone before using public Wifi but more public FREE WiFi is better than less. Google's will less likely be overloaded.

It depends on what type of AP's they use. Getting ~120mbps of total throughput isn't uncommon for corporate grade access points with 802.11n if they are of the smart antenna variety.
