| Caps mostly rumors (I hope :)) I just got Surewest out here in Elk Grove. From the salesguy, the CS rep I talked to, the install guy, and the install supervisor, there are no caps on the net. Running the 20/20 for $59.99 right now, and I've pushed probably 200GB or so on it, up and down, already. Mostly FTP video downloads of the recent game competition I did video for, and not a peep from anyone. | |

1 edit | Re: Caps mostly rumors (I hope :)) If Surewest has officially gone to no caps again, that is good news. I say again because they have flip-flopped between unlimited and caps a few times over the years. I guess I'll give them a call tomorrow to confirm that this is the case.
Edit: Well I called tech support and they are still claiming that there are caps. 6Mbps 40GB/month, 10Mbps 75GB/month, 20Mbps 150GB/month, and 50Mbps 400GB/month. As I stated in my Surewest review awhile ago, these are soft-caps and they don't usually enforce them, but there is always a chance.

50Mbps is 400GB 20Mbps is 150GB 10Mbps is 75GB 1Mbps is 30GB
I forgot the 3Mbps "cap"

1 edit | Re: Caps mostly rumors (I hope :)) When I called up the other day, I was told the 6Mbps and below (6Mbps,3Mbps,1Mbps) are all 40GB now. (DSLReports removed the "less than" sign when I tried to include it in my previous post)
I can confirm that, at least in the past, they were targeting the top ten heaviest users.
When the 20Mbps tier was first introduced, it had no cap. I was told by multiple advanced tech support people at the time that when asked explicitly about the TOS, "No matter how much bandwidth you use it is impossible to degrade other customers service so you will never get a TOS violation."
This continued to be their policy for 18 months until shortly after they introduced the 50Mbps tier, when they changed their TOS/AUP, made some new caps, and started enforcing the new caps on the top ten users. They also adopted a three strike system for enforcement. You get up to two warnings and the third time, if you still don't make an effort to reduce your usage they would drop your service.
I have no idea if this is still their active policy. After talking to some other Surewest customers, I was getting the feeling that after the initial sting operation on all of the top 10 users for a few months, they decided back off once again. I wouldn't be surprised if they now only target people with extremely excessive usage over multiple months.
My philosophy is to never worry about my usage or count bytes. I just use my 20Mbit connection however feels natural. If Surewest ever decides the premium I pay for natural use of a fast connection is unacceptable, I would drop them in a heartbeat for an ISP that doesn't charge such a large premium and save myself a lot of money. I've been a Surewest customer for four years now and this has yet to happen.

1 edit | Uploaded 1.5 TB and I haven't heard anything yet... I've been nonstop downloading and uploading large files via uTorrent since I got the service a week ago. Not sure if they would call me or mail me something if I were over using my connection. What's the point though of having a 20Mb/20Mb connection if you can't run it as fast and as long as you want! I mean I'm paying for the service and I read through their AUP and it said nothing about soft caps. Granted they have the ability to change their policies whenever they feel like it but it would be a "bait & switch" in my eyes and the best way to lose me as a customer. I currently pay $59.99 for internet here in Elk Grove, Ca and an additional $15 for phone and plan on changing over my Dish HD to Surewest once my contract is up. I seriously hope Surewest doesn't do anything rash that would lose my business...

| Re: Uploaded 1.5 TB and I haven't heard anything yet... Yet may be the key term. If Surewest ever decides to crack down again, they would send you a letter in the mail and require you to reduce usage to 150GB/month if you want to keep service.
When Surewest did the crackdown on the top ten users they added the following to the AUP:
"From time to time, SureWest establishes guidelines that assist it in determining whether the use of its network or Internet Service by any individual non-commercial Customer is acceptable or may be considered excessive and/or burdensome. Customers whose Internet usage consistently falls outside of the parameters permitted by these guidelines for the package they have selected may be contacted by SureWest and requested either to modify their network usage activities to bring them into compliance with the guidelines or to purchase another SureWest Internet Service package designed for Customers with heavier Internet usage."
"Repeated or continued excessive use of Internet Service may lead to suspension or termination of a Customers account. Suspension or termination of a Customer account for any of the reasons outlined above in this section will be considered to be the result of a Customer contract breach."
