2nd biggest network day ever for Akamai
10:37AM Wednesday Jul 08 2009 by Karl Bode
tags: bandwidth · stats · world · content
An Akamai press release proclaims that yesterday's Michael Jackson Memorial service marked the second largest day ever (behind only the Obama inauguration) in terms of total traffic on the Akamai network, the company doling out 2,185,000 live and on-demand streams in Flash and Windows Media formats. "Total traffic on the Akamai network surpassed a rate of more than 2 terabits per second during the memorial service," says the company -- which points to a real time graphical view of streaming across the Akamai network. For those interested, Akamai's frequent State of the Internet reports make for good reading, and offer insight into global broadband speeds and trends.

I will admit ...

that I watched some of CNN's web feed (complete with streaming Facebook comments that at first were distracting but at times humorous). This was from my home office, which is serviced by a 20/5 Verizon FiOS fiber connection.

For about 95% of what I watched the broadcast was amazingly smooth and undisturbed, but there were a few "skips" towards the end that implied CNN's servers were understandably buckling under the strain. Or perhaps it was their viewers' satellite servers operating under that "Octopus" or whatever their feed optimizer is that I always pass on loading.

Re: I will admit ...

Yeah, CNN is milking this cow to the point that they're destroying their reputation. Jackson gets a bigger frontpage spot than 911 every day since his death.
Even now, after it is said-and-done, look at the homepage.

Re: I will admit ...

The MJ coverage shows where the lack of priorities seem to be, and thats kind of sad. To see networks overwhelmed like that though would be an interesting study. This would also be a good time to look at how Time Warners network handled this. This would be a good assessment of their network to show thaat caps do nothing for congestion when everyone piles on at once. To the person below...I was just ranting because I was sick of hearing about a "pop" star that is being portayed as a great humanitarian.

Our priorities should be what now? Do we need the govt to step in and tell us what these priorities should be too? To preserve the sanctuary of priorities.

He was more than a "pop star"

Re: I will admit ...

Who said anything about gov't mandating priorities?
And what more was he than a "pop" star?
If your priority is Michael Jackson at a time when we're our soldiers are involved in a war on 2 fronts, and North Korea is trying to instigate a 3rd front, all while we're attempting to claw our way out of a recession/depression...then thats actually pretty freakin sad!~

Well said. So yet another celebrity whose last big hit was 20 years ago dies of a drug overdose. Exactly how is this "news"? If his private life wasn't so bizarre, I doubt he'd get this type of attention.

What really annoys me about this was how it took 100% of the attention of the world press away from Iran, at a time when world scrutiny may do some good. The ruling clergy there may be brutes, but they have asperations of portraying themselves as a legitimate government, and videos of peaceful protestors being shot in the streets don't help their cause. But the program directors at the news channels thought it more important to bring us Michael 24x7 instead. I'll cringe the next time I hear one of their ads proclaim them to be "The Place for Politics". More likely "The Place for dimwitted National Enquirer Readers".

I even heard one of MSBNC's on-air personalities dismiss complaints on a radio talk show with the comment "you don't like it? why don't you go spend time reading the Stimulous Bill instead?". 'talk about insulting your regular audience.

It just that "reasserting" has no function in that sentence.

There's a reason to that, and that reason is that FOX beats them on political news and current events, such as the Iranian election.

In fact CNN had its lowest ratings in 2+ years when the news of the Iranian elections broke - because everyone was headed over to Fox and to a lesser extent MSNBC.

Re: I will admit ...

News used to be something that wasn't driven so much by profit. The networks provided it as a "obligation" to their viewers. Since cable "news" has become popular, "news" is now thought of as a profit machine. Thus, good reporting dies and is replaced by popular "reporting". Fox made a mint off this, though they don't really report, but regurgitate other sources and discuss and spin it in a way that appeals to their wacko viewers.

Baloney,

the only thing that was straining were servers not built to handle the traffic.

While this event was supported without any issues for our broadcast customers, it is also important to point out that Akamai continued to deliver perfect quality of service for the remainder of our 2,800 enterprise customers.

Most folks were at work during the day, so company Internet connections took most of the impact.

We spent a good portion of the day identifying video streaming servers and null routing them because web browsing traffic across the company was saturating our external firewalls and starting to interrupt business communications. (Turns out CheckPoint Secure Platform maxes out around 6gbps on an HP DL580/10GigE interfaces)

You should have instead gotten one feed and relayed it on the LAN. Or just put a TV in the break room. There are going to be events like this many times in the future.

It's a little different when you manage a network for 600-700 office locations spanning 17 countries.

Barely much lag

I could def tell the servers were getting pwned before the event where they were interviewing fans but yea surprisingly during the actual event, there was barely any lag. The akamai website is pretty cool Bookmarked it.

They will stick to MJ until the next big tabloid story. The best thing that ever hapend to Gary Condom was 911. He was the big story and everyone (FOX/CNN/MSNBC/etc) had 24/7 coverage of him and the missing girl. Once 911 hapend he was old news and barely got a mention.

The go from one big sensational story to the other and use politics as the filler. They only care about one thing, ratings.

CNN is hoping for another Mideast war or a Latin American war(Honduras, Venezuela, Nicaragua) to cover, so they can get back some of their viewers and advertisers.

Even the trouble in Iran over the election did nothing for them since the Iranian gov't wouldn't let the reporters leave their offices.

The proof that he touched kids.....

Is the fact that he paid a family $24 million of a boy who had VERY DAMAGING evidence against him not to come forward with that evidence.

No...it's not. That kid's father (who is low life) told his kid to say those thing for money. Period. The kid, now an adult, wants to recant...but cannot because of the legal issues it would cause for him. Remember, He got a BUNCH a money on a lie. The Jacksons could come after him legally. There is even a question of extortion.........
