Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease
(old news - 11:34AM Monday Jun 28 2004)
tags: business · spyware
With the increase in spyware, there has also been an increase in spyware removal "companies" that prey on consumer desire to rid themselves of infestations. At worst, these tools are being pushed by spyware vendors themselves looking for another avenue of infection; at best, they simply don't work very well. Anti-spyware crusader and site member Eric Howes stops by our forums to point out the sheer volume of such questionable products. This list at Spyware Warrior outlines which companies have utilized less than ethical advertising methods, or offer products which simply don't work. The site also offers a section pointing out the uncanny similarities between many of these products and free applications like Spybot and AdAware.

Absolutely superb list

I found the new list compiled by Eric Howes earlier this morning, and as always, Eric has outdone himself in detail and in making sure no stone is left unturned.

This list is a MUST for anyone concerned about their online privacy and security.

Kudos to Eric Howes for his continued efforts in creating information that is up to date, well-researched and as definitive as humanly possible on any given date.

Re: Absolutely superb list

This is a great compilation of info I'll keep bookmarked for reference and will share with others. This list provides a detailed look at the shadier side of the anti-spyware software market. Clearly a lot of work went into this.

Thanks again, Eric, for your dedication in continuing to develop and provide online resources such as this.

eAcceleration Slimeballs

These guys are actually located about 10 miles north of where I work. They've been advertising on local television lately and showing up to various job fairs. They are slime.

eAcceleration Slimeballs

For those who have no idea about eAcceleration, this thread, dating back to September 27, 2003 from the »Security Forum, should dispel any doubts about just "how" slimy they are.

Re: eAcceleration Slimeballs

Speaking of eAcceleration, there's a current thread on
another of the company's products, Veloz AntiVirus (kind
of like Bonzi.com calling their Internet Alert a firewall)
in Security:

»veloz scumware seen on comercial just now

Re: eAcceleration Slimeballs

You know the sad thing is. Both of these products have been advertised on the old TechTV - TechTV previously did eAcceleration ( Stop Sign ). Now that they are G4Techtv they haven't learned there lesson. They now have the flashy hype commercial for Veloz AntiVirus. The thing that bothers me the most. Is that your average consumer who doesn't know better. Will be like I saw it on G4Techtv that is a reliable source. They wouldn't let bad companies advertise on there network. So they go and install this crap that hurts more than it helps. It just goes to show you morals sometimes get lost in the urge to make money. Well from a quick review of the other thread. And going and looking at the link. It's seems these 2 companies are one and the same. I'm sure this has already been discovered. But going to the Veloz AntiVirus site and hitting download takes you to the eAcceleration's Stop-Sign Anti-Virus product page.

Re: eAcceleration advertising

if you object to eAcceleration, and their TV Ad's, please contact the cable networks, and let them know what is going on

if enough people complain, they will pull the ads

Adverts

Did they just rename that from Phony Spyware Removal Tools to Iffy Spyware Removal Tools?

Would it be a good idea for lavasoft (ad-aware) to do adverts ? or at least explain this kind of information on the site?
