IPTV On The Xbox 360 Not Dead YetMicrosoft in trials with AT&T? Maybe. ( old news - 10:14AM Sunday Jan 11 2009) tags: business · hardware · TVIP · AT&T U-VerseIf you recall, years ago there was lots of chatter about carriers using the Xbox 360 as an IPTV set top. With Microsoft's long list of telco IPTV partners (Bell Canada, British Telecom, Reliance Infocomm, Swisscom, Telecom Italia, Deutsche Telecom's T-Online France, AT&T), it seemed like a natural evolution for the console, but so far it has been a no show. Our friend Dave Zatz at Zatz Not Funny checked in with Microsoft at CES and confirmed their IPTV plans are not dead -- in fact it appears they may be focusing on AT&T as a partner, which would hopefully someday mean Xbox 360 powered U-Verse IPTV. We're guessing any potential bandwidth caps wouldn't apply.

Think of the Promos AT&T could run, too: The regular terms, no contract, rebates, etc etc for the standard installation with the regular Moto/Cisco equipment. -OR- The same rebates, but with a 2? year contract, to get an 360 Elite as your DVR, or even just a regular STB.
The youtube videos are aplenty of the 360 running the Microsoft IPTV software (the same package the U-Verse STBes run).
And should MS/AT&T start public, or even "friendlies" trials, sign me up! | |

What would really be awesome, if they got things off the ground, would be to allow the XBox360 to mount CIFS shares. Then, you wouldn't need to worry about the dinky harddrive options on the XBox360.

I would be shocked if they didn't charge you more to access it from the 360. | |

1 edit | Bandwidth caps are not relevant to IPTV As I've pointed out many times in these forums, comparing U-verse TV to streaming video over the Internet to your PC, and then crying foul because there are bandwidth caps coming on the streaming video but not on the TV stream, is a complete non sequitur.
When you make this comparison, you are either simply not paying attention to the facts involved, or you are deliberately ignoring them for the sake of promulgating an inane anti-AT&T conspiracy theory.
Why? It's simple. With U-verse IPTV, one video channel essentially equals one single video stream on the network, FOR ALL USERS. So if there are 50,000 users watching a show, there's only ONE STREAM ON THE BACKBONE.
By contrast, if those same 50,000 users are watching streaming video from a server to their PC, that's 50,000 SEPARATE VIDEO STREAMS ON THE BACKBONE.
So, the statement "They are going to cap my Internet, that's anti-competitive, they just want me to use their TV service instead of streaming/downloaded video on my PC!" turns out to be completely unsupportable crap. | |

| Re: Bandwidth caps are not relevant to IPTV I too dislike the argument about this as it is too shallow. There are caps on the IntErnet not IntRAnet and one stream per channels as you state.
One could argue that traffic that never has to leave the network although it's destination is public should also not count towards the cap (AT&T customer to AT&T customer) however the one downfall would be complexity.
I don't think it would take too much to allow the 360 to work as from what I can see of media room it seems to have a great relationship with Media Center and extenders which that is exactly what a 360 is. With that being said I do hope this happens, happens, soon and that we get Media Sharing soon since they are are taking away flickr pro accounts. | |

| Say it was IPTV but wireless live cable TV direct from your computer to your TV Screen or wireless device (Laptop, I-Phone etc). Watch Cable and Network shows just like you do know when you sit down on your couch.Zero Bandwidth caps because it's not streaming video it's live from the Network. Would that be cool or what!!! | |
