ICANN.com and IANA.com impacted

The Associated Press reports that ICANN, the California company in charge of the Internet's addresses -- apparently can't even keep track of its own. According to ICANN, they lost control of the ICANN.com and IANA.com domains when an Internet registration company it oversees was tricked into transferring the domain names to someone else. ICANN only lost control of the domains for around twenty minutes or so, though the problem impacted users for several days.

Re: Again?

I think this is old news. The story I read a week or so ago said they lost control of the domains for about 20 minutes like this done does.

The AP news story was referring to the same incident that happened on June 26. This wasn't another attack.

Re: Again?

Re: Again?

that happens all the time. I sent one in about Google being sued but it never was never "news worthy" because it was oh mighty Google and we can't say bad things about them. But the funny thing is the article i sent in was on the front page RSS fed

Probably because it was all over everyone this time. FoxNews had it also. The last time it probably didn't make the mainstream. This time it did

Stupid

Like the old saying goes, "There's no cure for stupid." As long as a human is in control somewhere, you're going to have mistakes.

Is this really fair?

If a regular person forgets to renew his or her domain they are out of luck. If ICANN forgets why are they are allowed to steal it back?

They didn't forget to renew it. Someone tricked a registrar into transferring control of it to another person.

Sounds like a similar copycat to what happened to Comcast.

its passwords.

This is what happens when you have weak passwords and/or little to no security of them (i.e. mutiple people know them, have access to them, etc.) which allows a bit of well done social engineering to happen.

could happen to anyone, so really.. nothing to see here, nothing to do. ..move along.

Uhhh no.

it wasn't passwords for an account, it wasn't a renewal issue. It was that a root server coughed up its digital guts after an attack and ICANN and IANA were the specific targets of the attack.
There were about 30000 domains that were compromised but it was those two that were of interest to the hackers.

Go CHINA!

Yeah, CHINA goes Loser.

I can't stand this type of pirating, or any of it (this kind or any other). Whatever thrill is involved for those engaging in it, they're still just run of the mill thieves doing thievery and thinking they're cool for stealing.

Cheating is stealing, it's the same bad character taking what isn't theirs from someone else. Whether it be bandwidth, someone's time and/or trust, all are resources that thieves steal.

So, yeah, "Go, CHINA, go Losers!"
