ICANN Consultation Results Are InDecision is in Eye of Beholder ( old news - 01:43PM Thursday Jul 27 2006) tags: ICANNThe Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) met Wednesday as part of its consultation process with The U.S. Department of Commerce on the upcoming expiration of its agreement to co-manage the DNS. At issue is whether the 1998 agreement should be extended to keep the joint management in place or whether it's time for the Commerce Department to bow out. And, depending on one's choice for information, the webcast meeting was either a harbinger of momentous change or another example of maintaining the status quo. "We have an incentive and a long-standing policy to complete this transition," said John Kneuer, acting administrator of the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration. "But we will take no actions that will [compromise] the stability and security of the Internet." Internet Society President and CEO Lynn St. Amour argued on behalf of handing over the DNS reins to ICANN sooner rather than later, saying "We continue to be concerned about attempts to politicize the Internet and its management. As long as the U.S. government has a role in ICANN's governance and management, organizations and other governments have an incentive to try to leverage political channels to their favor." CHARTER OF THE UNITED NATIONS:
PREAMBLE
WE THE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DETERMINED - to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and
- to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, and
- to establish conditions under which justice and respect for the obligations arising from treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and
- to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,
AND FOR THESE ENDS
- to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours, and
- to unite our strength to maintain international peace and security, and
- to ensure, by the acceptance of principles and the institution of methods, that armed force shall not be used, save in the common interest, and
- to employ international machinery for the promotion of the economic and social advancement of all peoples
The Purposes of the United Nations are:
1. To maintain international peace and security, and to that end: to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace, and for the suppression of acts of aggression or other breaches of the peace, and to bring about by peaceful means, and in conformity with the principles of justice and international law, adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations which might lead to a breach of the peace;
2. To develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples, and to take other appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace;
3. To achieve international co-operation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character, and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language, or religion; and
4. To be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations in the attainment of these common ends.

1 edit | Re: I ask you Because we haven't reached 18-ys state of mind, let alone adults.
Past 5-6 years we acted like the kindergarten bully: fat, spolied, loudmouthed but truly ignorant and absolutely arrogant, can't imagine to act any other way than unilaterally.
Our political leadership became the most despised one on this planet - by large people don't give a shit about Kim Jong Il because he doesn't have any effect on their life. We do - and so far we only made this world worse during the past 5-6 years, including the internet (see ccTLDs, see the sabotaged .xxx TLD etc).
We are truly inept for anything like this - we have to get rid of this totally lunatic administration and its cronies everywhere. | |

Wow, again, proving how utterly ignorant you are. Thanks! And as I have proved, you can't grasp a simple concept such as this isn't just about the WWW, it's about more than that, and this is what you can't grasp, you aren't really worth the breath it takes to type anymore, you have proved time and time again how much of an ignoramus you are, and you can keep proving it to everyone else, I am done with you.

Next, someone will split hairs over the ITU's association with the UN.
