Keep only the stuff you want on a web page and send it to your phone

Researchers at IBM have come up with a new software program called Highlight that has the potential to make it much easier for mobile web browsers to complete tasks from their cell phones.
"Highlight lets users record the steps required to perform a simple task on the Web, say looking up flight arrival information on a Web site. Users can "clip" sections from a Web site and then save them on another Web server, which then serves the slimmed-down pages to the mobile device."
This would allow mobile web users to easily navigate sites that might otherwise be difficult to use on a limited mobile phone. The same service could theoretically be used by consumers who want to create more personalized versions of their favorite web pages for easy browsing and navigation on their mobile phones.

Unfortunately, the software has not yet been released and may not actually come to market due to problems including the fact that some web sites don’t want their content copied onto other servers. If demand for the product is high, researchers may push for its release.

Many major web sites already provide mobile versions

Probably never see this go live due to legal issues. And the fact that many major web sites already provide versions for mobile use - especially since the advent of the iPhone.

»m.google.com
»m.youtube.com
»m.comcast.net
»weather.mobi/xhtml/cc/
»wap.mlb.com/
"http://text.dslreports.com/"
»us.m.yahoo.com/
etc.

Here is a web page I made that lists many others:

I was thinking the legal end would be an issue too. Websites that fund by advertising suddenly are still providing, without the ad revenue (as the stuff isn't even loaded) Major lawsuits there.

Although I did find this tool that skirts legality unless they signed deals with the sites they use:

It formats info from many sites in to a mobile version.

Google does it

Although not perfect, if you search for a site and then click on it from m.google.com, Google does something like this for you for ANY site, not just ones you have set up.

Typical IBM

Develop stuff that never makes it to market or if anything, never gets standardized. If it works well, they should sell it to Google and let them make it happen.

Mr Anon

@comcast.net

Sounds like.

From the description it sound sort of like the clip feature for it was either osx or the iphone that let you turn pages into widgets, but a step above if it can perfor actions for you too.

It's time once again for the old adage...

"If you don't want your stuff copied, don't put it on the Internet."

Seriously, people, how hard is this to understand? You don't want your content copied onto other servers? Too bad, it will be. Get over it.
