The phone does come with a travel charger.
The $10 phone does not come with a SIM card, so users will have to swap one out of another phone or buy one. If the user isn't swapping out a SIM associated with an active plan, he or she will need to buy a prepaid phone card for minutes. But you need to buy a sim card or transfer one from another phone.

Unless you are a traveler that worries about losing your phone and doesn't like having a contact list at your disposal, why the hell would you want this. According to the article, IT HAS NO SCREEN. Let us say that I have a SIM cell phone already. The SIM is the soul. It has the time/contract on it. Moving it from phone to phone? Why?
Calling the Hop-On phone on the weekend gets me nothing. Not even a way to leave a message. Poorly thought out.
Any of us can go to a thrift store or a yard sale and find a used cell phone for less than $10. Try to have it activated though. If it is a SIM phone and I move my card to it-what am I gaining?
The initial hype is not well organized. The "four hours" is battery talk time. Not actual "talking" time.

You must already have a carrier and said carrier provides your service. You gain nothing by using their phone over yours. Even worse, you have no screen or contact list with this phone. It isn't even good for travelers scared of losing their phone in an exotic locale. Once again, no screen to access your information. I see 0 point here for this phone, other than adding to landfills. It'll probably be kids or teenagers who buy a phone like this and ditch it after a few uses. For the normal person, these phones are no different than those tracfones available now. | |

That just seemed wrong to me. Other times sales people tried to make me seem as if I was unamerican for not wanting to text every one, and not surfing the net from my phone? What part about parenting do they not understand. The phone is for my kids to share for emergencies and such, not a fashion statement. I guess my thinking is backward from others as I welome this alternative.
I read the terms for pay as you go phones like Tracphone. Tracphone seemed like the biggest scam I ever came across. | |

I researched the others. I had to make a choice and elected to go Tracfone.
It is a matter of both time and minutes.
Here we have two adults, each with a Tracfone. Occasional, brief contacts.Totally controlled by each user. They are a means of communication.
We are saving a "bundle" versus the previous cell provider.
Yes, no unlimited nights and weekends. That is why we have Skype Pro. We have laptops for the mobility and connectivity.

So regardless of usage, you must repurchase minutes, unless you go for the 500 minutes a year for $150. No bargain there either because no matter how you cut it, you pay between 45 to 50 cents a call.

Wait for Tracfone to offer their "twofer" deal (2 60 unit cards and a refurbed phone for $20) and the cards then cost about $10 each - so $40 for 360 days of service.

| Interesting, but whats the point? I only see a limited market for these phones in all honesty. I also suspect that the "green" crowd will throw a fit over this business model. Other than drug dealers (or in limited use as a promotional item), a simply prepaid SIM is a much better choice. Why would you get an entire new phone when you can simply switch out a fingernail sized SIM card instead??

Today, Southern California is the only area of the country where you can walk into a store and buy a Hop-On phone (at Walgreens), making them an option for a relatively small group of people at this point. (A company spokesman says a recent deal with Fluent Wireless will put the product in 300 stores throughout Tennessee, Iowa and Wisconsin by the end of the second quarter.)

Now when I go somewhere where I do NOT want to carry my nice phone, instead of using my beat up old Razr (which has a busted screen anyway), I can swap my SIM into this.
If my SIM gets lost, it's $35 to replace. With the cost of the phone - $45. Alot better than a $300 phone replacement.
I have destroyed two phones previous to this (water/beer damage - what can I say) to keep my good phone in good shape.
This is on the same level of a disposable camera. If you want good photos - you bring out your nice Canon/Nikon. If you want the ability to snap a photo, but are concerned about the camera - you buy a disposable camera. I view it exactly the same. | |

Always check sellers feedback etc. I couldn't live without a display plus I do use some of the other features from time to time. Now if I lost it Verizon wanted $219. Insurance at $5 a month plus $50 or so for a replacement Insurance is BS unless it's an expensive phone that you can't replace it for less $100 or so. I am using the V3m now with a 2GB card that verizon says won't work. Plus I use hackware to directly copy my mp3 and videos to my phone. I keep my V3c ready if I need it with the same accessories I regularly keep the both phone sync with my numbers and calendar. If my phone breaks or is lost it takes a few minutes on line to switch them over. I don't lose voicemail etc. when they turn it off until I activate a insurance replacement. | |

I'm right there with you: I had a phone until about this time last year, when I could no longer justify blowing $35 a month for something I used scarcely half a dozen times a year.
So I, too, would like to have one of these El Cheapo phones.
And anyone who thinks that these phones are a terrible idea is perfectly free to hang onto their money and not purchase one. But I would ask that such people please stop pretending that they know exactly what's best for other people.
The release of this phone is not going to mean The End of The World. So all the self-styled environmentalists out there can stop pretending it will.
Better yet, perhaps they could channel their energies into creating a five dollar phone that poor people could more easily afford?
Unless, of course, they can only derive enjoyment from depriving people of things, rather than making things available to them. After all, bringing things to people at prices they can easily afford is not as easy as it might sound. | |
