Broadband and HDTV to Serve Major Yachting Race
(old news - 02:27PM Sunday Mar 16 2008)

High speed Internet and high definition television are important viewing features for many sports fans. FleetBroadband is taking those features out on the water to bring a better viewing experience to yachting race fans around the world. The company is serving as the below-deck broadband provider for the Volvo Ocean Race using technology that guarantees high quality voice and high speed data communication from the water. The traditional broadband technology is supplemented by satellite technology and maritime radio technology to overcome the challenges of trying to transmit from the ocean. The purpose of this is to send high definition television and rich media content to viewers of the race.

From the way I read it, the HDTV stuff will be FTP'd from the boats to a central host. The HDTV data won't be seen live as it happens. Internet users will then watch the pre-recorded HDTV from the land based web site over a 39 week period.

All 39 weekly half-hour TV shows and all eight one-hour summary programmes will be shot in HDTV. Race organisers estimate that 90Gb the equivalent of 20 DVDs will be sent from the boats to race headquarters over FleetBroadband. This will be supplemented, as with previous races, by radio interviews, still photographs and text written by the crews also sent via FleetBroadband and other Inmarsat services.
