'No, our speeds aren't bad, but we'll make them better anyway'

Earlier this summer when PC Magazine released their state-by-state findings about average Internet speed, Hawaiian ISPs protested. They said that the study’s methods didn’t reflect their real speeds. But maybe they took the information to heart because Hawaiian Telecom just launched residential high speed Internet that’s faster than anywhere else in the state. They’re offering 7 mbps download speeds for $40 / month and 11 mbps download speeds for $10 more. Next they plan to take the leap into digital video services.

Looks pretty good...

7mb/1mb for $40/mo. is a good price. Could it be that they have such a small footprint compared to other ISPs that they are able to offer it at such a reasonable price?

In comparison, Comcast charges $59/mo. for their 8mb/768 service, and BellSouth (AT&T) charges $42.95/mo. (Plus $2.97 "regulatory fee") for their 6mb/512 service....

Re: Looks pretty good...

I agree 7 Meg/1Meg for $40 is a great price. They most likely deployed more Rts to make the service available.

In comparison, Time Warner Cable charges $34.85 month for 7 Meg / 512kbps. [At least locally anyways.]

Time Warner Cable charges $34.85 for the first 12 months at least that is what they charge in Milwaukee.

BellSouth (AT&T-SE) no longer has a Regulatory Cost Recovery Fee that was dropped over a year ago.

Good deal.

Apparently the The Carlyle Group's purchase of the Hawaii assets of Verizon didn't turn out to badly. Can the NE Verizon customers up for sale hope for the same ? Stay tuned...

High Speed Internet in Hawaii

They do not say if it's cable or DSL.

So it's either Vdsl+ or ADSL2+ ?

More than likely ADSL2. ADSL2 compatible equipment in general is less expensive.

Hawaiian Telcom

Hopefully this will force Oceanic Time Warner to be more competitive with their offerings. Since there is no FiOS
here, the highest speed they offer is 8Mbps/512K for 54.90
a month (Road Runner Turbo).

The pricing for higher speed service is :

39.99 for 7Mbps service (with landline)
49.99 for 11Mbps service (with landline)

55.99 for 11Mbps service (without landline)
45.99 for 7Mbps service (without landline)

69.99 for MyChoice bundle (with 7Mbps service)
79.99 for MyChoice bundle (with 11Mbps service)

The only caveat is the 7/11Mbps service is only available
to people living 8K or 6K feet from the CO.

Edit: Hawaiian Telcom is using FTTN/ADSL+2

They can still get 3Mbps service at a max of 13,000 feet and
1.5Mbps at 18,000 feet.
