But 10Mbps U-verse starts today
(old news - 05:35PM Friday Feb 01 2008)
tags: Fiber · business · trouble · AT&T U-Verse · AT&T Midwest
AT&T is irking people all around with problems in different areas of its service. Yesterday’s outage was one source of irritation for 3G and EDGE customers who weren’t able to get online for much of the day. A more ongoing problem for some customers is the inexplicable reduction in size of pictures sent by MMS; some of those messages aren’t going through at all. And making headlines this week is a complaint filed by the Alliance for Community Media which attacks AT&T for providing sub-par service to public, educational and government (PEG) channels.

AT&T did please many customers recently with the announcement that they’re going to be offering a 10Mbps/1.5Mbps U-Verse tier for $55 a month when bundled with U-verse TV. The start date for that service was set for today and people are beginning to place orders.

I agree, its nice they have those speeds, but after what they have said about bittorrent users I would never go to them for my main internet usage. Before I get flamed, I do actually use BT for legit uses, WOW updates are a big one, trials and linux ISO's are another. Revision3 shows are another big one for me as they download automatically. I'll stick to my Comcast, their sandvine is better than not being able to use BT at all.

Re: Uverse

I don't see the problem then if you use BT for legit purposes. They never said anything about throttling bandwidth...Yet...

I don't recall that AT&T said anything about BT users in general, just that they plan to filter pirated content. The implication being that P2P transfer of legitimate files should not be affected. It remains to be seen if the technology to distinguish between authorized distribution and unauthorized distribution will work reliably, and on a large scale.

I agree... I'll take the Internet, but I don't want their MS IPTV.

Also, it mentions $55 when bundled with TV. How much without IPTV ? Where do you order it standalone ? Oh wait, they don't advertise it standalone.

As far as their 3G goes, I had and used 3G voice w/o issues.

Re: Uverse

I think it's 10 bucks more a month. In any case, I have UVerse now, and probably am going to get rid of TV soon. If they start clamping down on Bittorent, I'll probably just go to dry loop dsl, provided by their.. left hand? It's a few bucks cheaper, but doesn't use this ridiculous gateway and seemed to be pretty damned reliable for me.

The TV is a joke though. The party really gets crashed by the WinCE boxes, which are just crap through and through.

Re: Uverse

It's been the reliability factor (compared to DirecTv) and installation time (many hours) as well as cost vs. what I have. For 3Mbps/U300/Uvoice, its at best equal in pricing to DSL that I currently have + POTS unlimited + DirecTv.

I would consider it for Internet only, or Internet + VoIP.

PEG Channel

Can I get a lower bill if I don't take the PEG channels. I haven't looked at them in years and I am sure the content is pretty much the same, amateurish productions, local politicians blathering, etc.

The only one complaining about PEG channels is the loser organization that represents those who deliver these worthless channels. Most customers just see them as wasted channel space.

Maybe its a local thing, but...

I've been clicking around the U-verse ordering page for the last couple days. U-verse *is* available to my home, but when I try to order, there is no U100 bundle and no U100 option in the create-a-bundle. The 50 channel family package is there, but not the 100 one.

Also still not seeing the 10/1.5 tier for internet as an option, and that is what I REALLY want.

You have to order U100 on the phone. It says that somewhere on the Uverse site.

Uverse? Try "Re"verse

Uverse or better known to us telco employees as "Project Lightspeed" is an utter joke . Combining fiber with copper plants and the teaming up of the phone company with Microsoft is destined for nothing but headaches. That is, headaches for our customers. Yes, those customers that have been tortured by the offshore "helpless" desk and by contractors for premise CPE/IW repair for both residential and business.
Oh yeah, I forgot the temporary employees being used throughout the former BellSouth nine state region.
Maybe the Deathstar should take a really good look at Verizon?
Not only did they do their IPTV "FIOS" platform very well but guess who does the complete installation? A Union employee.
I would certainly welcome any and all feedback from Verizon employees.
P.S.-Take a good look at the Customer Satisfaction of FIOS and compare it to the rest. It's a FACT!

While I agree that FiOS is a better overall strategy (esp. longterm), it isn't IPTV.

Re: Uverse? Try "Re"verse

Try this one. I was at a client in the hills of West LA who lost one of her phone lines. This was as the rains were nailing us. So I happened to see a Verizon tech in his van around the corner. I asked if we could get him to look real fast at this problem. His response was they had 1100 tickets in queue when the norm should be 200, so my client would have to wait her turn. I also asked about the FiOS in the area. He said it was at the bottom of the hill, but Verizon ran out of money to extend it for now, AND they were not paying much attention to the existing copper plant. So VZ clients in the area were getting double-screwed.

Re: Uverse? Try "Re"verse

Yeah - its been available since ~ last August.
Since they've rewired the neighborhood (Valencia Hills - west of Wiley Canyon between Tourney and Orchard Village road), my DSL has been VERY stable, even during the recent rain.

According to AT&T, I'm at ~12,000' which they don't offer 3008/512kbps. They 'originally' claimed I was at 9,000' (CO didn't more 3,000' away)

Re: Uverse? Try "Re"verse

I figure I'll sign up after others have gone through the pain. I don't want to commit until I see things stabilize. I have a friend in Stevenson Ranch that just ordered a package. I have to go set up his network (make sure security is still OK) once they install it. I hope to have a better idea then.

Supposedly the AT&T store in Stevenson Ranch will be able to demo Uverse. I'd like to try before I buy.

Still useless

10/1.5 is still useless for the amount of money your paying..the upload barely even changed, why even bother? The download is pathetic.

Atat should of went with a 20/5 tier, I think that's the sweet spot..even for power users.

bingo. UVERSE doesn't have a chance at getting me back until they can offer something BETTER than what I'm getting through Cox.

infrastructure, insfrastructure, infrastructure

Can't speak for every community, of course, but here in Sacramento at&t is only for copper phone service except for the few dozen (well, maybe there are a few more) houses that are close enough to the half dozen COs to get data service.

They wouldn't even let me have DSL service (too far from one of the half dozen COs they said) yet DSLExtreme.com (a reseller) provides me with 1536/384 DSL (we have Comcast too but don't start me up with their problems).

It would be nice to argue the merits of high speed DSL, Uverse, or Project Lightspeed (which by the way did promise Sacramento more RTs years ago but that never happened). The million or more citizens of Sacramento County might as well be living somewhere in rural North Dakota.

Infrastructure, infrastructure, infrastructure.
