But calls their version of Comcast's technology 'Bolt'

User iansltx See Profile writes in to note that Grande Communications, the San Antonio based overbuilder who might be shopping itself around, has updated their website to reflect the new "G-Force Cheetah with Bolt" plan they're now offering. The $50 uncapped tier will provide 12Mbps customers with bursts up to 24 Mbps, though the PowerBoost-enabled tier will burst as high as the network can stand (sometimes beyond 30 Mbps) if it's able. Comcast's popular Powerboost technology, which increases speeds for the first few moments (in Grande's case they say ten seconds) of a transfer has been licensed to Cox Communications, Time Warner Cable, Shaw, and other operators.

I remember Grande

I liked them. They had a really great tiered service back in 2001 when I was in Austin. Prices were good and the service was better than Time Warner. Support was spot on as well. Of course it's been a while since I was in their service area. They still doing pretty good as far providing service and support.

I have only heard the complete opposite.

They have been having financial difficulties for some time and I think that is what caused their customer service to go down hill.

last year when I looked, there prices were just slightly higher or on par with TW. However, it is a great failsafe if TW decides to implement caps.

"G-Force Cheetah with Bolt"

Makes my "X-wing Laser with Red Bull" tier look positively slow.

I wish they served here, too

Though I'm no fan of a mere 1 Mbps upload speed, their fiber does 15/4 (awesome...plenty enough download and very good uploads) and TWC's nodes are getting overloaded here so PowerBoost only does something for Standard users.

Licensed PowerBoot

Since when did this become a licensed technology? Cisco has done this for what, almost 10 years now in the corporate world?

I think I will patenent the drive thru window and then license it. What kind of idiots do these cable companies hire to do PR?

Re: Licensed PowerBoot

Comcast developed this technology for their network and put a patent on it. Which gives them the right license it. Do they charge other cable companies? probably not.

Re: Licensed PowerBoot

I don't believe so. My understanding is that DOCSIS provides the ability to dynamically uncap/burst connections. I believe "PowerBoost" is Comcast's trademark name, hence the licensing.

licensed?

Bolt is probably based on the Docsis 1.1 capability to utilize SfMaxTrafficBurst in the upstream and downstream service flows.
