Academia does.

GridToday offers an update on academia's private fiber superhighway. National LambdaRail, Inc, a consortium of research universities and the private sector, successfully lit the initial segment in November connecting the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center to the Extensible Terascale Facility in Chicago. Capable of 400 billion bits of data a second, the private network was designed to avoid the "Internet's increased congestion and high level of security breaches" that can hinder research efforts.

Re: Got fiber

Yeah, I think Internet2 is 10 Gbps as opposed to 400 Gbps.

Great, it's about as useful as the space program is to the average taxpayer.

Actuall, many useful things have come out of the space program. I predict many useful things will come of this, but it will be several years down the road before we see many of those benefits.

Believe it or not, some of the technology from the star wars program helped to correct my near-sightedness with laser surgery. I'm sure a lot of other useful civilian applications were derived from that government research. Like damonlab said, it takes time for that stuff to trickle down to the taxpayer.

Talk about narrow sighted...

Actually, Tang, velcro and several medicines and such were developed with the aid of the space program.

No, it was about the same price as the fastest ADSL, and plus, I can choose what ISP I want, that's why I took it. Next time, a Quad ADSL will suit me fine.

400 gbps huh?

said by article:
Atlanta and Washington should be connected by the superhighway by April of 2004. Atlanta to Dallas and Atlanta to Jacksonville sections will follow shortly afterwards.

Georgia Tech, the only Atlanta member of the developing consortium, plans to make resources available to over 20 colleges throughout the state through the use of an electronic "on ramp" which they plan to manage.
Gee, I remember just 25 years ago having 110 baud on the Georgia University Network and being happy about it! We've come a long way baby! It won't be long before it's commercialized and vandalized though.

It started out in the very beginning with less than T1 lines, but soon upgraded. I'm not sure when they did, but eventually they moved to T3s when that was the fastest thing you could get. Of course ARPANET is all but gone since the military and government started using networks from the major backbone providers.

Yeah, like now they're using GBLX, which was sold to the Singaporean government, for nothing more than 250mil. What a bunch of morons...

Re: Yeah I got fiber

I have fiber, I get it everyday in my diet. Other than that I don't see fiber coming to my town for at least the next 10 to 15 years. I suppose in the mean time they can fill me up on dsl lite.

Re: Yeah I got fiber

What kind of things could service providers dish out that isn't possible given our current infrastructure? Cannot what we have in place already sustain movies on demand and so forth even at HD resolutions? I have no idea, but just curious.

Re: Yeah I got fiber

I have fiber and I love it. My ISP is still growing so it doesnt have alot of bandwidth yet. Even still I get 2 megabits down and 1.5 megabits up. The GM at the ISP told me they are making money so next year those speeds will be double.
