Not fun how about full back up of downloaded installers for the games i play and the legal software i own that is nearly 80+ gigs of installers at 350ish upload that should be realy fun. Sorry ms yahoo google and who ever else comes out with these services it looks like a good idea on the surface untill you do the math then you find its not a feasable idea least not yet. Maybe in a few years when download speeds are mesured in the gig per sec range with uploads in the 100s of megs per sec then try it again and you might have a useable service on your hands. -- DSLR security chat at us.ausirc.net chanel #dslr_sec lets pack this channel open source dns server for *nix and windows »powerdns.com

| Re: Re-inventing FTP The earlier iterations of these kinds of services were clunky and slow (XDrive comes to mind)
The web based interfaces were not robust and prone to hangs. Most of the early providers are gone today, so there is some questions on the viability of the business model.
Of course Google would ad you to death as you surf your own "drive".
As far as FTP goes, they could simply load an iSCSI based driver on your PC and it would be a drive letter like any other.
I would like to see this get pushed out if for anything, to get providers to boost upload speeds.

| People do this all the time with their iDisk from .Mac. It's only 1GB but still, you can fill that up really easily. Then there's Spymac with their free WEBDAV moutable disk that is also 1GB which I use to back up my stuff. Of course I encrypt it before I upload it.
It's not going to be that hard to move a few GB onto a remote server, especially if you aren't going to move it all at once.

Once in a while isn't a bit deal...start the upload and let it do it's thing, but it seems that they (Google, Microsoft etc) want iDrives to be used very frequently for lots of different tasks which for me anyway would require faster upload speeds than 768kbps to be truely convenient. -- WAR HAS NEVER SOLVED ANYTHING, except ending slavery, facism, communism, Nazism....

| I did an off site backup service for my last business. The first upload was an overnight affair with my 384Kbs DSL line but then the incremental backups weren't all that bad.
I can't remember the name of the company that offered the service through Intuit/Quickbooks but it was satisfactory in all respects.

Right now, the majority of people don't have any use for more upload speed.. this would give them that reason.
It's a start.. at least it will hopefully get people asking their ISP's about it.
Personally, anything I uploaded to it would be encrypted.. but that's just me.

| There is technology... There is technology to make this kind of uploading and backup efficient without requiring a lot of bandwidth or storage space. The technology has been used in WAN optimization appliances. See for example »www.f5.com/solutions/technology/···_wp.html Basically, rather than brute force sending all the data, the optimization builds an inventory of data patterns and determines whether some of the data patterns already exist at the destination--in which case they can be reused without actually transmitting all the data. Of course this means that you must install a local application that does this work. But the upload bandwidth required is very small compared to what is required by, say, a ftp upload. Similarly, on the server end, redundant data patterns don't need to be stored redundantly in the actual data store. Our typical desktop file systems are very inefficient in that regard, but that is a fair trade-off for simplicity, flexibility and performance. | |

| perfect use of dedicated server I actually like the idea of online storage. Since I'm sure any service specializing in this will want you to have an aplication which no doubt will only be for windows for performing storage and retrieval functions, I can't say I'd use any of those services. However I did recently purchase a dedicated server, which in part will be used to store content I wish to back up off site. This content will be stored on a linux server, and I'll use good old FTP to upload/download items to and from the server. This will allow me to upload content to my storage space without being tied to a given application or operating system. I can upload data from my windows machine, my linux machine, or a friend's mac in the same way, as it should be. And should I need to access any of my data from a site that severely restricts what services I can access on the internet, I can set up my web server to allow me access to given directories, and therefore be able to access my content, even on a network where only HTTP is permitted. Now that's the way I like my online storage done. Now we just have to get the ISP's to increase upload speeds. I have an ADSL line connected at 864KBPS upstream. If ADSL is capable of a max of 1024KBPS upstream, why won't any ISP offer that as a top tier package? And don't get me started on cable. We already know cable is capable of at least 2MBPs upload, yet why aren't more ISP's offering that? Even those that do offer it, why only restrict it to just FIOS markets? Those outside FIOS areas would love to have a decent upload speed too you know. It makes me sick. Before when a provider would upgrade speeds, everyone had a chance to get it in the providers's coverage area, but now if you want the best package, you have to live near FIOS, or get left out. That's just wrong! | |
