1.5 million HTC G1 Android phones pre-ordered
01:23PM Monday Oct 13 2008 by Karl Bode
tags: wireless · hardware · T-Mobile US
The actual phone still doesn't arrive for a bit longer (October 22), but Google and T-Mobile say that 1.5 million G1 phones have been pre-ordered. The phone, of note because it's the first to feature Google's broadband-centric "Android" operating system, is seeing "a heck of a rush for an unproven software concept on never-before-seen hardware," opines the Motley Fool. Earlier this month, T-Mobile quickly burned through all of their pre-order stock, forcing them to triple their order to HTC. Hopefully they're working just as hard at getting their iffy third generation network coverage shored up, or there's going to be some grumpy android lovers out there.

Nice start

Hopefully this lights a fire under the a$$es of the other Telco's who are taking a wait and see approach.

?

What do they mean untested if you had one of those nokia tablets that you can get from best buy you were able to use android. Also wasnt the iphone considered "concept and never before seen" ?

So far the only people who have messed with Android were geeky types who could follow detailed instructions to install it on devices that themselves don't have a mass appeal.

This T-Mobile phone will be the first consumer device to come pre-loaded with the Android OS, which will put it in the hands of decidedly non-technical people.

We'll see...

Whether the figure is accurate or not...

But I suspect there will be eons of frustrated G1 owners. T-Mobile has a rather pathetic 3G network...you think AT&T is behind? Their 3G makes T-Mobile's look REALLY laughable.

That just means the handsets have been pre-ordered by carriers, not the end users.

According to some random site. There is nothing to back it up. My guess would be that it is a combined user and carrier sales number, and some dolt is mixing it up.

Re: We'll see...

I don't really get what you are trying to get at. There is only one carrier carrying the G1, and that one carrier (T-Mobile) is reporting the number of pre-orders from users it has.

Re: We'll see...

Pre order from the carrier doesn't always equate to end user orders. T mobile could order all they want but they could sit on shelves, yet HTC can count them as orders from their side.
Does that make sense to you?

i disagree. i think tmobile's 3g network will prove to be a lot stronger than at&t's.

anyway, where is fool.com getting the number from? they haven't named a source.

i wish tmobile would confirm then number.

SpellCheck

@charter.com

at&t does have 3G in more markets, but in all honesty, it gets the most complaints due to reliability and consistency issues.

I would give T-Mobile at least one year after their initial roll out then compare them Apples to Apples with their competition in terms of consistency and expansiveness.

lol..

who needs 3g on a phone that has edge and wi-fi..

do you really want 3g to download some hit song when you hear it on the radio in your car in 1 minute instead of 2?

On the subject of T-Mobile and RIMM, apparently they just released the Blackberry Pearl Flip on that network- no 3G, though.

Re: neat but RIMM

I don't know, I really like the flip-phone form factor, I think it works better than a straight candy-bar for making the calls as it hugs the side of the head... however, thanks to phones like the RAZR and Samsung's millions of cheap flips the form factor's now probably too associated with the low-end for there to be any real good flip smartphones... even the Pearl Flip is supposed to be a cheaper Blackberry- it's $150 on T-Mobile IIRC.

Motley Fool like the Apple Kool Aid

Looks like the article looks for almost every way to denounce Google. This quote got me:

quote:
Google needs the G1 to be a hit. Given all the hype around the Android platform, a weak or disappointing first example could turn a lot of prospective buyers off entirely: "Oh, that's all? Gimme an iPhone!" That could be the end of the entire Android platform.
It's not like Apple didn't make mistakes on their first release. They continue to have issues with their keyboard and call quality. Do people remember not being able to activate the phone because the servers were being overloaded? Oh, and how about that price drop and the $100 apology from Apple?

It's funny how one comment pointed out it took Apple 74 days to hit the 1 million mark. T-Mobile has sold 1.5 million phones and it hasn't even been released yet.

I don't see any proof regarding this 1.5 million figure..

I doubt they've already gone through 1.5 million. This article doesn't seem to have any sources to back up the claim.

This seems to be the site people are taking their cue from.

»pulse2.com/2008/10/10/google-and···re-sold/

quote:
Whoever thought Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) would not give Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) a run for it’s money when it comes to mobile handsets was wrong. Later this month, Google will be releasing it’s Android operating system on the T-Mobile HTC G1 phone. All of the preorders sold out, so T-Mobile tripled their original request order from HTC.

All of those extra G1s sold out too! The number of pre-orders sold out combine to be about 1.5 million units. These orders do not include retail sales.
And the holiday season has not even started yet. Google is definitely on the right track to compete for the mobile device market.

Seems the original order of 500,000 was gone quickly since they even reported that the pre-order link on T-Mobile was shut down for a short bit and then re-opened. People who ordered before October 3rd were told they would get their phones on October 22nd (release date) and anyone afterwards would get theirs around November 3rd.

Pre-ordering

I'm amazed that people are pre-ordering a phone that they haven't even been able to personally use. I'd never purchase a phone without holding it in my hand to make sure it was a good fit.

@wellsfargo.com

No way!

There is not way that Tmobile has been able to sell 1.5M G1 units already. There is no source listed at all from the Fool article. The number is probably closer to 150K at the most.

This is sure to create some hype though and may increase the number of sales.

Certainly not unproven hardware

Anyone that has had a windows mobile phone in the past year or 2 have used the hardware under the G1's hood. In this case, it's about the same as the HTC Kaiser (att Tilt) and the Sprint Mogul, but with a different exterior. Not the best looking exterior, but still.

I placed my pre-order when it was first available. I will be getting it next week

I've always adopted a wait and see approach regardless of the reputation of the developer, rather than deal with the hit or miss early adoption approach. Sometimes I don't have to wait long, either.
