Google Dives Into Distributed Computing
Adds Folding@Home to beta toolbar

With a broader proliferation of both bandwidth and computing power, and the increasing popularity of distributed computing, Google has begun a "beta experiment" of 1,000 users that has incorporated the Folding@Home client into the google toolbar. Google's partnership with Folding@Home

Am I the only one who thinks that this partnership will help DC projects in general? Google did the right thing in my opinion. This isn't some spyware application. They aren't following the Kazaa example by any means. Positive distributed computing applications need to be advertised and implemented heavily because it benefits everyone if a cure is found. This one by Google is a postive project. Kazaa's project is a totally for profit project and provides no benefit to the human race as a whole.

I hope this also raises the awareness of DC programs in general.

DC...Is it theft?

Here's an interesting twist...Is Google trying to condone computer theft? Wasn't there a guy that is having federal charges brought against him for installing DC programs on computers at his work (school campus)?
If he is charged with this (if it is a crime) then everyone who installs this feature on their browsers at work will be a breaking the law.

Google will have millions of criminals working for them.

IMHO, DC is good but there are those that haven't a clue as to what is happening in the real world but have the power to make laws for us.

It's opt-in so the user would have to activate the feature. Not all that much different than the user installing the client separately.

Choice Choice...

I think the Google bar should come with a choice of Folding@home, Seti@home or an integrated Distributed.net client. That way you can chose which project you want to use. Right now I've put my Seti@home clients behind my Distributed.net client so that the project can crack the RC5 project faster (we're getting there, less than one year till completion!).
