According to a
post on the Google Blog, the search giant is expected to unveil a beta version of a new Google web browser today. Dubbed Chrome, the new browser promises to be quick, stable and secure -- at least according to this
comic created by the company to promote the browser. There's some screenshots available
here for those interested, and Mozilla CEO John Lily gives his thoughts on the new competitor
here. The folks at Google explain how the new browser is really almost a web OS designed to improve web-based applications:
Under the hood, we were able to build the foundation of a browser that runs today's complex web applications much better. By keeping each tab in an isolated "sandbox", we were able to prevent one tab from crashing another and provide improved protection from rogue sites. We improved speed and responsiveness across the board. We also built a more powerful JavaScript engine, V8, to power the next generation of web applications that aren't even possible in today's browsers.
The (initially Windows only) browser should be available for download later on today.
