Without warning amid police controversy
10:03AM Wednesday Mar 12 2008 by Karl
tags: business · bandwidth · content · domains
GoDaddy this week pulled the plug on a new website that was getting significant media attention for its mission: allowing customers to rate the quality of the police officers in their neighborhood. RateMyCop.com founder Gino Sesto says he was given no warning about the takedown, and when contacted, GoDaddy stated his account was terminated for "suspicious activity." Another rep told him he exceeded his 3 terabyte bandwidth limit, something Sesto denies given he had "80,00 page views today, and 400,000 yesterday".

GoDaddy isn't commenting officially citing their privacy policy. The hosting provider does have a bit of a history with taking things into their own hands. As with most terms of service, GoDaddy's is so intentionally vague it gives them the legal ability to do pretty much whatever they see fit:
Universal Terms of Service for Go Daddy Software and Services...Section 5...NO UNLAWFUL CONDUCT OR IMPROPER USE..."...Go Daddy may also cancel Your use of the Services, after thirty (30) days, if You are using the Services, as determined by Go Daddy in its sole discretion, in association with spam or morally objectionable activities. Morally objectionable activities will include, but not be limited to: activities designed to defame, embarrass, harm, abuse, threaten, slander or harass third parties..."
Sesto now hosts the website elsewhere.

expected behavior...

Anyone that does even a cursory examination of GoDaddy's history should know that if you plan your website to be anything, and I mean anything, that the neocon establishment would consider questionable, you'd be better served by going elsewhere for your service. As a test, if you think your website would be criticized by Rush Limbaugh, don't use GoDaddy.

No-Go Daddy

GoDaddy is an independant company, free to server whom they choose.

I am an educated consumer, free to purchase from whom I choose.

I am an IT Manager and Consultant, who chooses which providers serve my customers, some of them of note.

I am an American Citizen, free to use the power of my voice to notify everyone I can of GoDaddy's practices.

I am done with this post and free to get off my soapbox before I find myself haunted by the ghost of Jimmy Stewart.

You are so right. Too bad most people just blow these "rights" off and jump over the cliff with the rest of the sheep. If more people took this stand, just think of how much more money you would have in your bank account. How much more FREE time you would have to spend doing something else and the statement you send.

It's not as much GoDaddy's practices as it is the government shutting down a private web site because they don't like it. Sure, you are free to go to another service, but what's to say the government will not bully that provider into shutting down your "voice" also?

The government? Exactly which sites has the government shut down because they don't like it? (and are we talking US Government, or Iran?)

So, uh, how exactly do I opt out of my government through consumer choice?

Unless you are equating choosing another service provider with moving out of the country.

Re: expected behavior...

He said in "OUR" history as in the history of the US. Also if your using the semantics of when it was declared an "official war" your just trolling. Bottom line is that it is one of the longest and most costly conflicts in US history. While the death toll of American soldiers isn't close to that of other wars, the effect it has had on the country and economy are actually worse.

GoDaddy can go to hell!

My brother hosts my website, but he registers all domains through GoDaddy, including mine. I'll be moving the registration at expiration of its current term. I objected when he first registered it there, but it was too late after the fact to do much about it.

ISPs, especially GoDaddy, need to take a step back, and remember what fucking country they are doing business in.

Does this mean...

Does this mean that GoDaddy can be held liable for remarks made by their clients? One is forced to wonder: They took site A down, but left site B up... does that imply that they endorse site B? Sounds like dangerous business to me.

GoDaddy Sucks...

But in there defense, if this guy is using shared hosting 99.9% of all other webhosts would of done the exact same thing. Anytime a website starts using excessive resources they'll get shut down. I'm sure he'll have no problems once he moves the site to a dedicated server.

Free publicity.

I love how this attempted shutdown simply gives RateMyCop.com more publicity. I know it's the first I've heard of it.

Not completely shut down

I just went to ratemycop, and was able to get on and click on the links. It apparently waits a few seconds before freezing the page you're on, and if you click on something "really quickly", it lets you through.

Seems pretty UN-vague to me. They don't want to be sued. If you think you are hosting anything that even *might* be construed as objectionable (as this guy should know his content is, if he has any common sense at all), go elsewhere...oh, and don't try to be cheap, pay up for a dedicated server if you're going to be using excessive amounts of bandwidth.

They can do whatever they want with their company, including deciding what they think is objectionable. It pays to read the TOS before signing up.

Or, start up a controversial site using Go Daddy all the while knowing they would pull it, then use the negative publicity to promote the site and trash Go Daddy at the same time.
It's pure genius to use the backlash from their unpopular agenda to promote their site.

RMC type sites becoming necessary.

As we go on, I'm finding the quality of police officers is declining, even though police departments are performing accountability better than ever.

I'm a big supporter of local police. I'd be stupid not to be, as I absolutely need them. I have actively taught my 5boys, youth groups, Boy Scouts, etc. respect for police and how to handle themselves if they are ever in a situation involving police.

It's getting harder and harder to do that, as department experience levels drop and they lose the ability to serve citizens effectively.

I believe nearly every police officer would put themselves between a bullet and my family. But on the smaller stuff that makes up 95% of what they do, my respect drops because they are intellectually (and otherwise) lazy.

An Example is:
Setting up radar traps, not where accidents happen (as is the stated purpose) but where they can capture the most speeders or on isolated stretches of road where the speed limit drops or is inexplicably low.

Another Example:
In handling citizen disputes or traffic accidents, they'll side with whichever party is the loudest or most manipulative because the officer doesn't check the facts before he cites or reams out the actual victim.

It's not that this stuff happens from time to time, it's that this stuff happens more often than not.

Now to be fair, the quality of citizens has also dropped dramatically. And that, BTW, is the pool where ultimately all police officers come from.

Fewer numbers of adults show necessary respect to police and even fewer parents teach it to their kids. The press is not only hostile to police, but teaching their readership to be hostile as well.

Police cheifs are more likely to invest money in adding officers, instead of investing in the corps of officers they already have. Experienced officers are not valued. Too much money goes to gimmicky equipment.

I don't need a motorcycle corps, a mobile lab or a talking police car. I need an officer with 20 years experience. Pay him what he's worth and get him on my street.

Since I don't have police with experience or have police with enough respect to do the tough things; I'd like to pick the best from the slim pickings my county offers me. I'd like a site like RMC so I'm not stuck, for 15 years, dealing with the fallout from an officer's poor decision.

The point of all this? GoDaddy sucks.

It is all about choice...

I recall GoDaddy having a shady history (locking in registars, shutting sites down with vague TOS...).

But since this gives this guy free publicity (I never heard of this site), he got to move it without much hassle, likely gets revenue (ads?) and tries to vindicate that what he is doing is acceptable until an ISP/host says otherwise.

If I were a cop, and someone libeled me, post my picture and was under false pretense...I would consider using the union to remove the site.

I prefer sites that show where the speed traps are. That is usually why a cop is bad, right? You speed, you get pulled over, you say the wrong answer to that question, "Do you know why I pulled you over?" And THIS is where you discover good vs bad cop.

(PS. Bad cop in San Jose killed two cyclists. Weaved and drozy and not paying attention...now that is sad)
