Hurricane Gustav

What a huge let down. But the good thing was it didn't hurt gas prices too much.

Don't repeat that line of bull to the people in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi who have had to put up with it.

But the good thing was it didn't hurt gas prices too much.
Uh huh... Because that is so much more important that people loosing homes and business or, hey, being dead.

Re: Hurricane Gustav

You choose where you live? Right?

I hear so many people that cannot get broadband and the response is, you chose to live there and cannot get broadband.

Well, I say you chose to live there, and hurricane prone was certainly a lot more clearer than broadband availability.

Suck it up.

Re: Hurricane Gustav

So next time there is a blizzard or a flood in Pennsylvania, maybe I should post like ninjaturtle about how disappointed I am that it wasn't worse?

I guess it is much easier just to toss out the "move" strawman and ignore the actual point in contention.

Re: Hurricane Gustav

Sarcasm, mostly. I see this point thrown out all the time.

I have had broadband since 1998 only because I worked for an ISP and was able to get those links, no one else had those links. Our area did not have cable, DSL, fiber, wireless, nothing until about 2004, my specific town in 2006 or so.

Hurricanes, I have sat huddled in a bathtub hoping the scream of the hurricane would stop so I could breath.

My point is, so many people when they live in NY or LA (whom feel there is a big ocean in between the two) seem to bitch a lot because of there caps or slow 3meg broadband. Then, when all else fails, someone throws out "well, you chose to live where there was no broadband".

The same point can be made, yet in a more solid way, about living in say New Orleans. You live in a damn swamp under sea level, not too freakin bright. Yes, New Orleans has some history and spirit to it but do not expect the rest of the country to bail them out every other year money wise. Get my point?

Hurricane is an act of god and hits where it hits. If your home is not built to take it chances are you cannot get insurance either. You clearly made a choice there.

We deal with the blizzards in PA, in fact I live in what is called the snow belt because of the Great Lakes, the snow kills (literally) here yet hurricanes are cooler.

So what I am saying is part sarcasm part reality. Every location has its problems but I want to puke when I hear people cry about getting ATT DSL instead of FIOS. BOO HOO, I feel so bad for you... nah. There is a whole country out there and as long as people have the attitude I demonstrated the United States will never be united. There is an election coming up, maybe it will make a difference.

*sigh* that's just some of the lamest stuff I've read today. Tell that to the folks in Haiti, I guess the kids there just choose to live there and could move at any time...

Look you can make some comments like that in terms of people not preparing, they should be prepared. But otherwise...come on.

We've all got our issues to deal with no matter where we live. Belittling any particular area's situation is pretty cheap.

@direcpc.com

well what about the people that has lived where they live before the internet existed.i moved where i live in 1988 there was no internet,or cell phones then, and IM not that far from town 2 1/2 miles from the city limit to be exact

cable stops 1 1/2 miles from me,and dsl stops 1700 feet from me.the cable, and phone company's have really dropped the ball with their internet when it comes to advancing farther than 2 1/2 miles outside of town, but what really pisses me off is that they will spend millions to push higher speed to existing customer's instead of expanding

well at&t may have messed up because they are losing more and more voice customer's everyday, and its putting a hurt on them, but hey go ahead and increase speed to existing customer's that doesn't do much to increase customer's

Free!

Cool! Beancounters don't want to pay for a full workweek after holiday pay so I get a free Friday off.

Actually, I will be outdoors briefly RSN as I have to go out and forage due to a paucity of nukeables in my freezer. Not planning on doing much tonight: listen to a Disco Biscuits show and watch the Rosetta news conference tomorrow morning.

I have one more night at the House of Pain (should be an interesting commute for me tomorrow afternoon and evening), then a week's worth of vacation! I'll be back here next Friday, too!

I get a new toy Monday: an Acer TravelMate 5720-6635!

I'm "wining"

Dashwood Sauvignon Blanc
Yes I did not spell it wrong. I am sipping a glass of "Dashwood" white wine. I am so thankful for what I have and am celebrating on this Friday evening.

We should all step back and pause to just realize how good we have it and embrace our loved ones.

Yes, we may each have individual "crosses to bear" but overall, I think we need to just practice a little humility, and try to give back a bit.
Of course the wine helps.....

What am I doing this Friday night?

Well, I'm being me as always. Right now as we speak, I'm downloading the Half-Life 2: FaceFactory v8 Cinematic mod from FileFront. The total mod size is roughly 5.5GB and I'm downloading all of this over 768kbps Verizon DSL. My gaming won't be too happy until this overnight download finishes. I WANT MEH FIOS!

And yes, I started it roughly 7 minutes ago, and going at 92.5KB/s, it's only done 80MB. How sad . If I was on my relative's 3Mbps FrontierNet connection, the total mod would already be roughly 15% done.

Slideshow of future tech for the U.S. Army

Yahoo

What's up with Yahoo th past few days? Here in the SF bay area Yahoo is slower than a herd of turtles swimming up river. The home page comes up quick but none of the links on the page work. I click weather and I get a white screen. I click a news article and I get a white page. I try to log in to email and I never get to email....

What the heck is going on? Every other link I have in my favorites pops up right away.... Pogo.com, DSLReports.com, CNN.com, everything. It's just Yahoo.
