| MS rolls out a 3D photo tool
It runs on FF2 & 3 and IE7. If using IE7, it will also install an ActiveX control as well as the application software.
MS blog on the tool: »blogs.msdn.com/photosynth/ Photosynth Q&A: »livelabs.com/photosynth/faq/
They finally go live with their 3D photo tool: »www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2328541,00.asp
Microsoft on Wednesday opened up its Photosynth 3D photo offering to the public. Photosynth takes a collection of regular photographs and reconstructs them in a 3D environment. It could take Flickr photos of a monument like Notre Dame Cathedral from hundreds of separate accounts and compile them into one, continuous shot of the cathedral and its surroundings. Users can install Photosynth at » photosynth.net/Default.aspx . All photos that are added to the site will be public and visible to anyone on the Internet. It is currently only available on Windows-based machines running XP and Vista, and users will have to sign up for a Windows Live ID to access Photosynth. If you go to the link »photosynth.net/Default.aspx , there are already a lot of examples posted on how these panoramas/3D photos look.

| Grossman was damaged goods when they got him. Orton looked ok but he will still have to prove himself. I liked the new guy Forte if the O line can get him some holes he runs like Thomas Jones straight up, would liked to see if he can jook and cut. Somebody get #23 some stickum and have him shake hands with Danny Manning. All in all I look forward to an interesting season... Da Bears!!!! | |

| Re: Looking to buy an ultra-portable PC? Not sure if it belongs to ultra-portable or just ultra-thin, but I can vouch for the MacBook Air.
It's my first Mac and I am not looking back. Travels very well, has very decent battery life, is very light (3 lbs) but still has a sizable screen. At $1800 it is cheaper and is as or more powerful than its similarly scaled competitors.
The remote drive thing works fine for loading software, but get the $99 DVD/CD burner. It makes things easier and faster for I-tunes and backing up files, etc.
Connecting the Air/DVD combo to a TV while traveling is a snap and saves on rented videos. It also plays DVDs very cleanly on-screen with headphones (or the mono speaker - the only real drawback I've found so far). I've been watching DVD/HD quality streaming video of the Olympics for the last two weeks with a FiOS 30/5 connection and a Netgear wireless router with no problems. It synchs with the "mother ship" PC for a shared files area like a dream.
Start-up and shut-down are easy. And here's the best part: not one single BSD. And no viruses (knock on wood!)
I have this little foam padded sleeve I fit the Air into and it goes in hand or in my shoulder bag along with other items.
Lives up to the hype for me. There are PCs with more power for the money, but if portability and functionality with good but not gamer power is what you need for moving about, don't hesitate.
And, I confess, it is just so freaking cool. =)

Yes, these computers may be small and not very powerful, but they're powerful enough for Web surfing, email, working on documents, and watching standard definition videos during your trips. And because they're so energy efficient, it's not unusual for some models to easily exceed five hours of battery life under normal use.
They may be small and somewhat limited, but they do eliminate the feeling you're always carrying around a five pound weight everywhere you go. And as long as you accept and understand their limitations (forget playing processor intensive 3D games or watching 1080p high definition material), you'll wonder how you've lived without one for so long.

| Sweet. That brings back two memories.
1) I was playing golf with some college buddies a few years back. We were playing the Trent Jones trail (Grand National) in Alabama. As buddy #1 squares up to tee off on a par 3, we all get this feeling like something is behind us.
Then we see a shadow.
We look up and see a B2 Stealth Bomber whispering overhead at *maybe* 500 feet. We could hear it for sure after it passed overhead, but it wasn't going all that fast, so it was pretty quiet considering. I suppose if it were after us, we'd have been dead before we heard it.
Flying wing. Black. Utterly and totally badass.
We did not offer buddy #1 a mulligan for his crappy shot.
2) Two years ago...traveling up US-95 in Nevada north of the Amargosa Valley but south of Beatty on the way to the Tioga Pass entrance to Yosemite NP. We see this little dot off to our right. It then turns into a plane. I recognize it as an A-10 Thunderbolt (a tank killing close air support jet that is hard to miss with the engines off the tail and all the business stuff hanging off the wings). ( My dad was USAF...blah, blah.)
»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:A-10···ht-2.jpg
"Huh" I thought.
Then it turns and banks around and starts heading right down US-95 straight at me at about...wait for it...50-100 *feet* off the ground. This thing handles in 3D better than my BMW does in 2D. I flash my lights at him twice just for fun and he tilts his wings twice in response and buzz bombs us. I didn't know whether to crap my pants or be proud as hell, he was so good. There's a marine base or something nearby...I don't know for sure.
I suppose we were pretend target practice. If he ever goes to Iraq and needs to kill a helpless BMW 328, he'll be ready. We were too spry for a tank!
When we got to our stop for the night, I didn't have to change my underwear, but I did need a stiff scotch. =)

| Silverlight from MS to give Adobe Flash a run for its money
»news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080822/tc_···ght_dc_1
Microsoft's Silverlight technology and rival Adobe's Flash format are currently locked in a race over who delivers the world's online video, but the ultimate prize may be who powers the next generation of Web software. Using Silverlight, the NBC site offers a glimpse of what is possible with future Web applications because viewers are able to watch up to four videos at once or follow the action with an online commentary that runs alongside the video.
More than 40 million U.S. viewers have gone to NBC's Olympics site to watch some of the 2,200 hours of live footage from the Beijing games. All those viewers need is a Silverlight player on their browser if they do not have one already. By building up Silverlight's user base, the world's largest software maker is looking to win over developers who see Web platforms such as Silverlight and Flash as a new way to deliver powerful Web-linked programs incorporating rich graphics.
Microsoft plans to expand its reach to close the gap on Flash, which is already running on most of the world's Web-connected computers and powers over 80 percent of the video on the Internet. The next version of Silverlight, being tested now and due later this year, will support Microsoft's .NET framework -- tools used by developers to create desktop applications that work on Windows. Microsoft introduced its first version of Silverlight a year ago, but Gartner's Valdes said the second version is the first real form of Silverlight since the inclusion of .NET support turns the technology into "very different animal." Both Flash & Silverlight make the delivery of video on the web fast and easy for users and developers. They both run on Firefox and IE. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. They both run on Firefox and IE. Yea, but I'm not mercilessly spammed to use Flash dozens of time a week; all because I have to visit the OS creators home page to repair some malformed bit of code.
I've learned when that when someone pushes you that hard to have something, it's rarely in your own best interest to accept.
Because of MS's obsessive info-spams, I'm locking as many systems out of it as I can.

and what is a systems purchaser for the company he work for. Doing at CC much less buying out advertisement in a local newspaper.
With out the Specifications it may be a weak system for vista any ways.
It is even lower for CC to add the $40 a hidden fee.

| Or better yet you tell them that the Geek Squad or Firedog is not to touch the machine. They can't force you to let them. The last time I bought a computer from there I told them under no circumstances were they to break the seal on the box. They tried to insist that they needed to, but I told them that as the purchaser I demanded to be the one who opened the package. At that point they didn't argue with me and just walked the sealed box to the front.
Fry's Electronics is another alternative. Just had to say no twice to the extended warranty offer. No sales pitch for it either, surprisingly enough. In fact they asked it like it was something ingrained into them, kind of like a sales clerk at a store who has been there 20 years saying "sign here" on a credit card receipt.
Plenty of places don't ask for it. Heck, depending on what kind of cheapo computer you're getting, Walmart is even easier. My Mom wanted an integrated system (and for her it was perfect) and it was so difficult. The hardest steps were me lifting it into the cart, her lifting her debit card out to pay for it, and me lifting it into the car. Ouch.
Plenty of alternatives

A lot of HP machines are pretty close to "home built" systems, down to the standard ATX case/power supply and ASUS motherboard inside. You can even change out the motherboard in them with an off-the-shelf one. Done that a few times. all of the dirt cheap systems cheap out on parts and are more likely to brake down then systems with better parts that cost a little bit more.

Ok here's something I been hearing bits and pieces of and not being the brightest bulb in the marquee would like to know if it even possible. Live wireless cable TV on your PC or Laptop. Open your laptop in Copenhagen of Beijing and be able to tune into USA,A&E or anyone of like a 1000 channels worldwide. All interactive and can be hooked up to your 42" flat screen for half the price of regular cable. Is it viable? Can it be done? Has anyone else heard of it?
