| 26k Dialup Sucks but the more I read about Hughesnet & satellite net in general the better it becomes in comparison.
Compare:
Data that can be downloaded in 24 hours: 26k: 234mb Hughesnet: 300mb Verdict: Hughesnet wins, but not by very much.
Latency: 26k: 167ms+ Hughesnet: 1100ms+ Verdict: 26k wins.
Price: 26k: $10/month(For my second phone line; add $18/month) Hughesnet: $60/month (lowest priced package.) Verdict: 26k wins. even with a second phone line added.
Set-up/Install fees: 26k: None Hughesnet: $400 Verdict: 26k wins.
Speed conditions: 26k: Always constant. Hughesnet: Slows to a crawl during peak times. Verdict: Tied I'd say; Because the constant dialup speed is pretty equivalent to Hughesnet's crawl speed.
Reliability: 26k: Only line conditions or modem problems knock it out. And in my experience those are pretty rare. (I've had dialup for 10 years in various rural spots, and I've been in this 26k spot for a year.) Hughesnet: Gets knocked out by rain, fog, snow, clouds, wind, random passing birds and planes. Verdict: 26k wins.
Can it game? 26k: Yes (Tested with: CoD2 MP; CoD4 MP; Wii WiFi; Guild Wars; Battlefield 2 and various other online games.) Hughesnet: No Verdict: 26k wins.
Score: 26k: 5 Hughesnet: 1 Verdict: I'm not switching to satellite any time soon.

It should come as no surprise, but Google sites officially continued to dominate the Web landscape in July, drawing more than 141 million unique visitors and placing Yahoo and Microsoft at second and third place, according to analyst group ComScore Media Metrix.
AOL took fourth behind the top sites, all of which were enveloped in discussions about acquisitions or partnerships this summer.
Fox Interactive Media, parent company of MySpace, was the fifth most visited group of sites, with a registered 88 million unique visitors. Facebook, on the other hand, landed at No. 16 with 39 million visitors
The top 10 U.S. Web properties in July were rounded out by the big names in search, retail, and media: eBay, Ask Network, Amazon, Wikipedia, and CBS sites. The full press release from Comscore: »www.comscore.com/press/release.a···ess=2399

| Copyright Infringement now spreading to magazines
»news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080815/ap_···e_piracy
A fledgling Web site called Mygazines.com encourages people to copy and upload popular magazines that are currently on newsstands. Visitors can read high-quality digital copies of dozens of current titles, including People, Men's Health and The Economist, in their entirety.
The site, with some 16,000 registered users as of Friday, is a "flagrant" violation of copyright laws, according to legal experts — but it is run by an offshore company of specious origin, making it difficult to shut down.
"It's pretty hard to see how it's anything other than a straightforward set of copyright violations," said Jeffrey Cunard, an intellectual property lawyer with Debevoise & Plimpton LLP in Washington. "There are entire magazines with no commentary, no criticism — clearly not a case of classic fair use."
The challenge for the magazine publishers is that Mygazines's domain name is registered in the Caribbean island nation of Anguilla, which is a British overseas territory, and thus outside of the jurisdiction of U.S. copyright law.
Publishers could have recourse if the company uses servers physically in the United States. They also could sue the company in U.S. courts because content is available to Americans, but they would not be able to force Mygazines representatives to show up — nor collect any damages for any ruling made in absentia.
Repeated attempts to contact representatives of Mygazines.com went unanswered.
It's not clear how Mygazines would make money. There are no advertisements, and users can register for free.
Nonetheless, that's irrelevant to whether the site would be liable for copyright infringement, Cunard said. Publishers can claim damage because at least a few people will read the content on Mygazines.com instead of going out to buy a copy.
The U.S. Supreme Court already found Grokster, a file-sharing site, liable for intentionally inducing infringement. Mygazines's home page Friday featured plenty of copyright-protected works, and the company's tag line — "upload. share. archive." — encourages their digital reproduction. 1st music; then movies; and now magazines. | Big surprise - the scum group "The Pirate Bay" is involved in this pirate site. »news.yahoo.com/s/cnet/20080816/t···01846238
Mygazines is registered in the Caribbean island of Anguilla and hosted in Sweden, by the notorious PRQ. The Stockholm-based PRQ is owned by the founders of BitTorrent tracker site Pirate Bay and is known for hosting other dubious sites.
So if Time and other publishers are looking to thwart Mygazines and its more than 16,000 users, it may have to go after VeriSign, which maintains the master .com database.
Or, it could look across the Atlantic. It's not an impossible task: in February 2008, a Swedish prosecutor charged four men connected to Pirate Bay with conspiracy to violate copyright law; a week later, a Danish ISP was ordered to block Pirate Bay. Sooner or later the criminals that run the Pirate Bay will end up in jail or be bumped off by the CIA. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page Ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' | I checked out Mygazines.com and I have to say I think it's quite an innovative spin on an old medium.
If you take their Auto Tour you'll see that all advertising in the magazines is kept intact, thus the site is potentially increasing revenue for the magazine AND users cannot download or print copies of the articles.
Also, it's convenient not only for the user because they don't have to keep physical copies of magazines lying around, but it also helps publishers keep their costs down by not having to actually print and mail as many copies.
Granted, they could probably have a more equitable business model for publishers. Perhaps some kind of tiered pricing system that would depend on how many magazines that a user would like to read on a regular basis, but all-in-all I really think it's a pretty innovative spin on an old medium.

| VZ Contract Questioned? I see a War in 2011 "If the contract is so great. Do you think that the company and the Union will put the actual contract on line, before the members vote? You know, post the new contract on the Company and CWA sites for the employees to see. This is of course a Communications company and union they can do it, if they want to be open. One has to ask why they would keep their employees / members in the dark and only share talking points before they vote on the contract. What would they want to hide from the employees. As time goes on, you see that the COLA is only at the third year of the contract. Employees did not even match the inflation rate for the past year, they are already behind on inflation now. This aggrement does not even bring them up to being even with inflation. 3.25% gain in the first year, is no where close. I guess you could call this a negative gain to put a positive spin on the contact. You see that the contract seems to be weighted more to the future. Waiting for more of the older work force to leave. Does anyone know about the letters of understanding? Or even if we have such letters. It seems to be that this contract sold out the newer employees. Stockholders can see reduced benefits for the future of the Company, which is a positive for the Company. HR,well, I think they are starting to chill the Champagne for a post approval party, after the members vote on the contract. I would expect bonuses in that department." -Union Employee

| It is doubtful that the full text of the contract will be made public until it is fully ratified. If it runs anything like AT&T, there will be numerous local meetings where the union officers will explain the contract to the rank & file membership prior to the ratification vote.
Even local management in AT&T did not get the full text of the contract until ratified.
