| Terrible Umpring in the MLB
I've been watching baseball for as long as I can remember, 1979 or 1980. I've been a Mets fan since day one. Lived through many seasons of baseball in general, and as I've grown older, I just like to watch any baseball game that's available to me on TV.
Recently, the quality of the umpiring has been atrocious. I don't mean a few bad calls this year, although this year has been particularly bad. It just seems that in the last 5 or 6 years, the umpires have been notoriously bad.
There was the Mets vs Yankees game at Yankee stadium on ESPN on Sunday night a few months back, where the ball hit the pole and was called foul.
There was a game I watched a few weeks ago that was clearly a home-run to right-center (by the Mets), the 2B ump called it as such, and then the umps got together and over-rode that umpire, changing it to a double. They changed it, and ruled it incorrectly - the 2B ump had it right.
And then last night, the kicker. I'm not a Yankee fan by any means, but there has to be some level of umpiring where you just have to say "you have to do better than that." If you haven't seen this play yet on the highlight reel, then check it out. This is not my recording, only something I found on youtube. Now granted, the Yankees probably would still have not won, but this was a rally killer. It's amazing when an entire bar full of half-drunk people scream SAFE! (correctly) and then the ump says out when it's not even close. The part in question is the play at home plate.
Overall, the umpiring has just been absolutely terrible in recent years. -- "Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy." - George Carlin

OMG, what a horrible call. Runner's hand touched the plate before the catcher even started to turn to tag him. I agree, umps this year need to be slapped around a bit to get there heads in the game. It was a bad call. But after looking at the replay a couple times, you could see that the ump was screened from seeing the runners hand by the runners body. So, I can see how he could have missed the call.
Baseball needs instant replay rule like football with the same kind of limitations. Say the manager only gets to invoke replay a few times a game and not at all on balls & strikes. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page Ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya punk?

| Homeland Security can grab any laptop at the borders
»www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/co···ops.html
Federal agents may take a traveler's laptop or other electronic device to an off-site location for an unspecified period of time without any suspicion of wrongdoing, as part of border search policies the Department of Homeland Security recently disclosed.
Also, officials may share copies of the laptop's contents with other agencies and private entities for language translation, data decryption or other reasons, according to the policies, dated July 16 and issued by two DHS agencies, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
"The policies . . . are truly alarming," said Sen. Russell Feingold (D-Wis.), who is probing the government's border search practices. He said he intends to introduce legislation soon that would require reasonable suspicion for border searches, as well as prohibit profiling on race, religion or national origin. Now there is an incentive to leave your laptop at home when traveling out of the country. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page Ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' | waiting for my number to finish porting from RCN to Comcast I had Comcast internet and phone installed yesterday. Everything works great except I can't get incomming calls on my ported number. I had a tech that had been to my apartment two years ago and he remembered me. I have been told 24-48 hours for the port to be done. It has been 24 already and I would like to get my incomming calls back. Sound quality is better with Comcast.

| Freaking worthless telemarketers I have had several assholes call me about the warranty on my car, lowering my interest rate, etc. From the following spoofed number: 50622604193. Needless to say, it's a phony number. The carriers aren't interested in helping and the asshole callers know it. Then tonight, I got a call re: MediCal supplemental insurance. That had a real number, so I called it back. They have a message stating their phone number has been hijacked and that they didn't make the calls. I know how easy it is to fake a calling number. If you have the right equipment and the right kind of circuit, it's a breeze. Now the question is how can we stop these pieces of shit from doing what they're doing? -- There is not a man in the country that can't make a living for himself and family. I went through the whole process, wasting their time (making up fake information about how many credit cards I have, interest rates, etc.), and then asked why I was called when I'm on the do-not-call list?
After doing that 5-6 times, someone apparently took me off their list. I haven't received one of those calls for six months. I used to receive one almost every day.

| Re: Freaking worthless telemarketers I guess I still have a few more times to go before they pull me from their list. Yeah, I take as much of their time as I can. I had one girl (Hispanic) starting her gang-like talk. It was hilarious.
The thing that bugs me most, though, is they are hijacking numbers of good, honest businesses on their caller ID data. That really pisses me off, because I know they'll get to my number eventually and use it. At that point, I'll have to spend money to install systems that will deliver messages to callers before they transfer to me that will inform the callers of a hijack.
This is the new spam. Do-not-call lists are only for the honest players to follow. The assholes will continue to find ways to cause us pain, and the politicians will continue to cause us more. -- There is not a man in the country that can't make a living for himself and family. | Re: Freaking worthless telemarketers said by bigunk :Yeah, I take as much of their time as I can. I had one girl (Hispanic) starting her gang-like talk. It was hilarious. I had a woman go ballistic on me when I dropped the "ok, but can you tell me why you called me when I'm on the do-not-call list?" (at the point she needed my credit card number). She was offended that I wasted her time. I got extremely vulgar with her, calling her the c word, etc. Telling her she wasted my time. And her own time by calling me when I'd indicated I wanted no calls.
That was the last call I received six months ago.
What was funny about this is
* Their automated solicitation says "if you want to be removed from our call list, press 9." I did that 5-6 times but they kept calling. * Then I pressed 1 indicating interest in their service, and told the person who answered that "I wanted to be remo..." As soon as they heard those words, they hung up.
I had no choice except to scam them, waste their time, and let them realize for themselves that it's in their interest to remove me.
I had it down to an art. I acted like an elderly, easily-scammed man. "How many credit cards do I have? Oh, mercy. My wife handled that. She passed away last year. Let me see if I can find them? Oh, wait, Mr. Bigglesworth, you get off that piano. Oh, that darn cat. He hasn't been the same since Edna passed."
Once you realize what they're after, you can easily play them. They're looking for someone with multiple credit cards, high balances, and high interest rates. You can get them locked into the call by giving them the impression they hit the motherlode. They'll stay on the line, putting up with whatever scam your dishing out to them.
It makes it all the more satisfying when you finally drop the "ok, but can I ask you why I was called when I'm on the do-not-call list?"

| Re: Freaking worthless telemarketers Funny thing though...Early in the game I told them I was on the list and they called me. The response was,"You pressed 1 and you called me! I didn't call you at all!" So they're acting like they are a perfectly innocent victim here, and that I am the evil. Go figure.
As far as dropping the "ok..." bomb on them, I'd much rather keep them on the phone for my own amusement. Just that much less money-sucking time they have with other victims. My record is about 6 minutes or so, with 4 being the average. -- There is not a man in the country that can't make a living for himself and family.
