Firefox 3 final release coming on Tuesday

Fortunately, anxious users can get a preview of the all the features and updates that are included in Mozilla's browsers by taking a look at "A Field Guide to Firefox 3" by Debra Lynn Richardson.

The latest version of the open-source Web browser also features a big-time security upgrade from Firefox 2 by protecting users from sites that are phishing up front.

Release Candidate 3 was successful in picking up and fixing Bug 436575. With that crisis averted, Firefox 3 has nothing but smooth sailing in front of it until its release date on Tuesday June 17.
I have been using the release candidates for several weeks and the new FF3 is faster and easier on system resources than FF2. Overall it has been very reliable and almost all the usual add-ons are working without problems. If you are a Firefox user it is definitely worth doing the upgrade. And if you are an IE7 user, the new Firefox is worth a look.

Re: Firefox 3 final release coming on Tuesday

I'm looking forward to this. I was an IE user until around 2004/2005, hopped around a bit, tried FF originally but I didn't like it. Went to Opera. Found that Opera didn't work on a few sites, so I hoped back to FF and really love it. Been using FF now exclusively for 2 years or more, and looking forward to what v3 brings.

I am looking forward to it too. Version 1 I really didn't care for. Version 2 I thought was much better. The main reason I started using Firefox is when I switched to Mac I could not use IE anymore, and Opera didn't have the cool addons. Firefox 3 looks like a must have browser.

Dual options for ISP in Seattle (Renton)!!!

Well - I am super-excited that Qwest started offering their high speed (12 & 20 Mbit/s) in our area - now there's actually a choice in the matter of whom I can go with - Comcast or Qwest (or if I want wireless, Clearwire is always an option).

I just had Qwest do the installation yesterday, and it screams at 12 mbits on a local Speakeasy speed test!!!

Now I'm thinking of keeping Comcast+Qwest, but I dunno of a good dual-WAN router? Any clues?

MS will try and scuttle Yahoo/Google deal

»news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-99683···1_3-0-20
After some asking, here's what I got back from Microsoft spokesman Jack Evans. It's not exactly a declaration of war, but clearly Microsoft is not giving the deal its blessing.

"Our position has been clear since April that any deal between these two companies will increase prices for advertisers and start to consolidate more than 90 percent of the search advertising market in Google's hands," Evans said. "Legal and industry experts agree that this would clearly make the market less competitive."

The real question now is which regulatory agencies, if any, take up Microsoft's position, as opposed to that of Google, which posted a blog Thursday saying the deal actually "preserves" competition.
And all of the above may not matter. Yahoo stock price is still dropping and if Icahn has his way(and it is easier if stock price keeps dropping), the deal will be crippled as soon as he gets new mgt in place after the annual stockholders mtg.

There's probably better answers coming....

but the Linksys RV082 offers dual WAN, and so does the latest beta 2.2 endian firewall distro (»www.endian.com/en/community/about/) if you have an older PC laying around.

I'm sure both offer redundancy (failover), but aren't sure if they offer load balancing (bonding of both WAN connections).

Tim Russert Dead

TIM RUSSERT DIES FROM APPARENT HEART ATTACK
By CHARLES HURT
N.Y. Post
June 13, 2008 --

Tim Russert, NBC journalist and political heavyweight host of "Meet the Press," has died after collapsing at NBC's Washington news bureau, a source said. He was 58 years old.

Russert, who rose from the inside world of politics where he was former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo's press secretary and one-time chief of staff to the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, was able to successfully cross over to political journalism and rise to become one of its leading lights.
A great loss for American journalism and America in general. Rest in Peace Mr. Russert.

I too was saddened to hear this. I also heard that they are saying it was not a heart attack but an embolism (a clot that travels to one of your BIG arteries and stops your heart and respiratory system), resulting in death.

Either way, sad to hear the news.

My thoughts are with his family who had no clue that this morning would be the last time they would see him alive.

Disgruntled ex-employee gets 5yrs in prison for hacking

»news.yahoo.com/s/cmp/20080613/tc···08403740
A San Diego network engineer, Jon Paul Oson, was sentenced to more than five years in prison this week for intentionally damaging computers at his former workplace. The sentence issued Monday is one of the longest imposed to date in the United States for computer hacking, according to the Office of the U.S. Attorney in San Diego.

Oson resigned from CCC following a negative performance review. He subsequently accessed the CCC network, disabled the automatic backup process, and later deleted data and software on CCC servers, including patient data belonging to North County Health Services Clinic (NCHS), one of CCC's member clinics.

"With the shutdown of its Practice Management system, NCHS had to shift to a paper-based system. It took dedicated NCHS staff months to collect the paper records, input them into Practice Manager and initiate billing for those visits. The unavailability of charts and the associated computerized records impacted patient care."

Oson was ordered pay restitution of $144,358.83 to CCC and $264,979.00 to NCHS.
What a moron. He let his emotions destroy his career and ended up getting him in prison. And all over a bad performance review.

It sounds like the bad performance review that he received was spot on. Anyone willing (and able) to damage equipment and systems in this manner, under these circumstances, should receive exactly what this guy got.

There's probably more to this story. Certainly the three sides thing (Their side, his side, and the truth).

Regardless, it was a dumb move to mess with patient records and he's going to pay for it.

I'm shocked, stunned and saddened. The world is truly a lesser place without him. A giant intellect who still managed to retain his humanity, I truly admired him.

That's a function of the news system to let people affected know about the news item. It happens in every forum.

Heh, anytime there's a relevant news item, it's posted in the corresponding forum then locked. It's deliberate and happens in all of the forums, not just Comcast.

Re: Are Corporations the anti-Christ the Bible makes mention of?

It's a possibility. Personally I think Obama might be the antichrist. In his time in government, what has he accomplished? Nothing. He hasn't sponsored or even co-sponsored any meaningful legislation. People flock to this man for no apparent reason.(The world would 'marvel' at the beast.) This man has very 'shady' business and personal acquaintances. Rezco, Ayers, Dorn, Johnson, et. al. This man isn't about change. He's a crooked shit-ball politician like so many others. That's my take though. I think this guy is dangerous.

The Antichrist is a person, and he is a person that most people will be more than happy to put into power.

It's not the thief who is knocking at your door you need to worry about, it's the seemingly nice man you willingly let in that you have to watch out for.

Metered bandwidth... Do you know how much YOU use?

With the massive drumbeat by the Internet monopolists to bring in overage charges, Pay-Per-Byte, metering, etc to our connections, it made me wonder.... just how much bandwidth DO I use?

So I installed this nice little tool (it's free)

Netmeter 1.1.1.3. It's small, customizable and easy to understand.

Here's the results. Without FTP'ing, Usenet-ing, or P2P'ing, basically just limited Internet usage (Basic surfing, and a couple of regular forums visited and posted (this one for example) and some very light Youtube usage and some very minor gaming) it appears I'm using around 3-4 GB per month. Me personally. This is no hosting of anything, be it games, Xbox360, no Ventrilo, no Skyping, Netflixing, or anything else.

IE extremely basic internet usage: 3-4GB per month.

What does this tell me? That 5 GB Caps are pure CRAP. And honestly, anything under 50GB is still crap. Given modern internet usage, video, voice, backups, VPN, whatever, I'd say several hundred GB should be the minimum before any metering or overages start to kick in. MINIMUM.

Anything else is pure gouging!

Feel free to download Netmeter and examine your own usage patterns.
