Because there is no requirement for anyone to use them for name resolution. Any organization/country/UN can set up their own root servers and bypass the US ones.

Let's say the UN/ITU go forward. All member countries' ISPs will simply point their customers to DNS servers serviced by the UN root servers. If the US does not go along, the US Internet would be isolated from the rest of the world.

There's nothing magical about the US' root servers, it's simply a matter of history and convention that makes them rule the world today. That can change in a heartbeat if the rest of the connected world decides enough is enough. The DOJ, MPAA, RIAA, and various corporate entities have acquired ownership of U.S. Internet policy. This is not a good thing for the rest of the "WORLD WIDE" web.

This faux claim by the DemoPublicans that only THEY can keep the Internet free is a massive exercise in hypocrisy. All the DemoPublicans are concerned with are their payoffs from the broadcast and entertainment industries; they hold jack-shit care for "freedom", their only care is for the corporate bottom-line. Corruption at it's best.

I don't see how a fairly constituted UN-led consortium of many disparate countries, cultures, and economic/political systems could agree on much. They would be forever bogged down by their own differences to be vulnerable en-mass to the power and corrupting influence of our dearly-beloved corporations.

Re: hmm

I think it's time for the techies to take it back and leave ALL politicians out of it. We gave them a great gift, and all they can do is destroy it.

The broadcast industry? The broadcasters must not of kept up with their DemoPublican protection racket payments, I mean political payoffs because they are clearly under attack by the wireless telcos, cable companies and many (from both parties) politicians.

Is causing cable cutting by stupid programming or price hikes illegal?

THIS. I cut the cord because I got tired of paying for 250 channels of mostly garbage programming. What TV I watch now is whatever comes in from the antenna on my roof!

Not sure how much an outlier I am but when all content is
+ À la carte
+ on-demand
+ pay per view
+ per-use pay-more option to remove adverts
+ integrated as a single service with internet connectivity
= I become a TV service customer.

Yeah, yeah. There's a last mile delivery hurdle but what can I say? That's what this consumer needs before the product becomes worth buying. Until then it's DVDs of last year's shows.

Right! This is why I don't own a TV, nor will I ever pay for cable beyond Internet access. The antenna on your roof can stream OTA TV to your computer as well: Hauppauge Broadway. Everything else is available on the Internet for free, or almost for free.

The cable companies (especially Comcast) would be guilty if it was. NBC and the NBC Universal cable networks have continued their slide (away from quality) since Comcast spent $Billions for them. That albatross should be hung around the necks of shareholders rather than subscribers.

You do realize NBC isn't the only networks Comcast owns. They also own.

Versus( now NBC Sports )
Golf Channel
Style
E!
G4

G4 went down the shitter once Comcast took them over too. So this isn't shocking.
