Company spotted installing BelAir gear on utility poles

A user at the Cable Rant forums (via Wi-Fi Networking News) notes that Cablevision's Wi-Fi installation is well underway, and takes some photos of the BelAir gear being used by the NY-Metro area cable operator. The company is deploying BelAir 100S Strand Mounted Wireless Multi-service Nodes and Cisco Aironet 1500 Series mesh access points on utility poles.

Cablevision announced they'd be offering free Wi-Fi service to all of their customers last week, and stated the deployment would cost about $100 per user (they have 3.1 million cable customers). I'll note that non-customers can also pay Cablevision for service, though they've yet to reveal pricing.

Truly Free?

Will this truly be free, or will there be a rate increase to compensate?

Free, or...

If it costs $100 per user yet is "free," does CV absorb the cost? Who pays then?

Rate increases ahead?

Re: Free, or...

I would not be surprised to see it become available only to "Boost" customers, of which I am not.

Underground utilities

What will they do in areas with underground utilities?

Very good question. I think those areas will just be dead spots forever. You can't put poles inside underground-only subdivisions, and other solutions such as mounting them on houses will be very expensive/hard. I don't think much of Long Island is underground in my opinion.

That's a great question. I don't know how they'd really handle that. Most of my area isn't, but certain streets here and there are.

Perhaps they could use light poles? Though there I suppose it would depend on making a deal with the municipality.

NIMBYs will go crazy since it ruins the aesthic of the light poles (having a box on its shaft).

hmm

This is truly free if you pay for cablevision.

Basically you will see a ssid called optimumwifi and a webpage will come up. It will then ask you to log in with your optimum.net screename and password same as your cablevision email credentials) . Then you are allowed in.

I guess i have to start looking at the poles in the viollage by work now to see which boxes they have up.

Re: hmm

Sign up for 30 day trial and cancel.

I still have three previous accounts (previous apartments) which should be deleted and gone, but they work. Go figure...

Everywhere?

Will this be everywhere? Even for us in NW CT?

New Canaan »optimumwifi.com/#hsMap5 So thats some progress.

Hehe

@ssa.gov

How can this work?

I have 2 access points in my house to get full coverage.

How can a access point on the pole reach my house? Maybe 1 end, but not the whole house. And the signal would suck.

Also, would my house access points interfere with the free service? And would they interfere with me?

From inside my house I can detect about 8 access points, of which 3 are usable, my 2 and 1 other (if I stand on that side of the house). And that 1 is closer than the pole! I can't see how only 11 channels can handle adding free Wi-Fi to the area. (no plans for my area, just saying).

wireless broadband

maybe this is an attempt to undermine verizon wireless's evdo/lte plans on within their footprint. seeing as verizon is the all services extra provider.. cablevision might be spoiling for a fight in the wireless arena. which I think is excellent considering the next logical step.. porting the voip into wifi sip phones a synergy verizon would not like to hear about.

Re: wireless broadband

I wonder if Verizon will try to offer a combined FiOS + EV-DO plan to compensate- though that could be difficult with the wireline/wireless division at the company, and the fact that they'd be competing with a "free" service.

A VoIP phone service over this would definitely be an attack on Verizon and the other wireless companies- do phones exist that can do handoffs from one Wi-Fi cell site to another, though? Without handoffs it's much less of a competitor to cellular wireless.

Nothing is free

There is no such thing as free.

Someone will be paying for this. Probably existing TV and OOL customers.

Free for now.

I think Cablevision will keep it free until your hooked.
