Harrisonburg, Virginia: 'city of the future'
(old news - 06:01PM Thursday Mar 29 2007)
tags: municipal · networking · IPv6
The city of Harrisonburg, Virginia, will be the first to have a citywide IPv6 broadband network, according to infoWorld. Harrisonburg has partnered with James Madison University and Virginia ISP Visual Link in order to create a testbed for IPv6 services and applications. The network will be a privately funded, open access Wi-Fi/fiber model and is being deployed in stages across the city's 17-square-mile footprint. Experts have been concerned that the U.S. is lagging when it comes to IPv6 implementation.

Re: future?

You still only get one IP. If you are connected to their hotspot all you need is a computer that can handle IPV6 (XP and Vita both do) and a wireless card.

Ahem, you still only get one IP?

The point of IPv6 is that your IP is ubiquitous.

Re: future?

I read the guide. I still don't see anything stating a computer will need more than one IP.

you need 3 ips. if i remember correctly, these are what the ips are used for. i remember doing some ip6 routing long time ago.
-one ip for site to site network
-one ip for the intranet
-one ip for the internet

You can burn through your monthly cap with IP headers alone!

So...What About Older Clients?

I know IPv6 has been in the works a long time...but what about older clients that're directly hooked in which still only use IPv4? Just chuck out the device/computer that can't handle it and try again? Who foots the bill on such an endeavor?

I heard that the whole Internet is switching over to IPv6 next Thursday.

Gee...they didn't leave us much time to get squared away, did they?

ip4

I hope there is a way to connect to IPv4 addresses. Linksys will go bankrupt if you can get more than 1 IP/as many as you need, with IP6, but ISPs will never allow it.

visual link / world air waves franchise pulled

Hey All,

Looks like Harrisonburg has pulled the franchise from visual link / world air waves. It appears that visual link didn't do anything for the last year and 1/2. So the city pulled the franchise.
