19 year old Blake Ross's browser 'revolution'
(old news - 05:21PM Monday Nov 29 2004)
tags: software
BetaNews is running an interview with 19 year old Firefox architect (one of several) Blake Ross, who discusses the recent launch of the browser, plans for the future, and the browser's rather large competitor. Says Ross: "Internet Explorer does not have the passionate community of users that Firefox enjoys, and I'm not convinced that all the money or integration in the world can change that".

Re: Wow, this dude is 19???

There was a story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution the other day about a local high school junior who had developed his own video production editing software and was selling it for $7,000 a pop to school systems around the country. He's already got companies lining up for his services when he graduates.

Kind of made me feel unaccomplished.

I'm still in High School, while I'm not top marks, I have had headhunters call me. Age means nothing in IT, some of the best known companies have been started by people still in high school.

As many people say, Marks are not the most important, ultimate thing in a young person's life. When it all comes down, I rather hire someone without good grades that's a pratical thinker than a breathing textbook that seems to be the standard A HS grad nowadays.

I agree.

He hits on a very important point, without community support, no product could've succeeded as well as firefox has so far.

Firefox users are passionate, IE users are...well... let's just say they probably don't know about firefox.

I have to say that I originally was the same way.

One day I just started using it. After I did so, I couldn't go back.

impressive

im sure there are alot of kids his age that could do things like that, but the problem is the worms are what comes from it. i am glad to see him putting his smarts to work for the better of everyone, and at the very least.................securing his future.

Re: impressive

The issue that spawns the problem you mention is that young people often experience severe age descrimination while looking for work. They work harder and smarter than someone twice their age and make less than half of the money leading to feelings of resentment towards the world creating their glass ceiling. Why do you think young people always feel rebellious? Easy, the rest of the world is working to hold them down so they can keep what's theirs rather than having to share with the new hotshot.

It's been discovered over and over that many bright young people have technical development that far outpaces their character development, and this limits the positions they can hold without making those in authority legitimately nervous. Very smart people can trade "intelligent" for "experienced", but that only goes so far.

Young guns

Now that I think about it, the Mozilla crew is a bit of a young bunch...

Ben Goodger is in his early/mid twenties. Pavlov, when he first joined the Netscape open source push back in 1998, was in his teens.

A lot of the best coders in a lot of parts of the world are very young. I have seen a 19 year old code circles around a crew of developers. They have a tendency to have the time needed to learn and adjust to new methods and also the lack of kids and wives/life partners. The funny part is the older guys are generally very mad when these guys come and try to get a foot hold in industry. This tends to push them away from pro work and more towards the freeware/shareware and open source communities.

I have a feeling Firefox will stay open source, due to the fact that most of the best software that is out there today is open source. Granted MS office and windows are OK, Linux, and OpenOffice have alot to offer. How much did you pay for Office? or Windows? How much did you pay for Linux, or OpenOffice if you have it?

It takes Microsoft alot longer to secure its software with patches becuase they only have a select employeed groups surfing through the code.

You take an open source software, allow online communities to surf through the code, and wahla! you have TONS of people, that put focus into "bettering" the software.

It will be a sad day if Firefox closes its doors on Open source.

yes, because of the license...

if they'd ever change the license, then firefox would have to be open source, until that very point when they had changed it, and all code until that point has to be open; you can look at it as some guarantee, in a certain way they brag about themselves with this.

if that would ever happen, someone takes over from that point and continues, if someone doesn't, you can always do that yourself...

in fact (a bit off-topic) this happened with XFree86 under linux, XFree86 is the graphic system for linux and was really the only choice at the time. When XFree86 changed it license to another opensource license, but incompatible with most distributions, an old rival X.org was restarted at the very second, they merge all code from their own with the last version from XFree86 with the last license, and continued from there... Right now, XFree86 is pretty much dead and X.org is becoming the most used graphical system.

As they follow the same protocol, you can use the one or the other without difference, there is no real visible change in their versions, but they already added some longawaited features in their new version...

Re: Yeah

Excuse the typo doesn't change the fact in the past 6 months there been more changes to Firefox for bugs and security patches than IE...they just call it a new version and you have to completely uninstall the old version and reinstall the new, which is a lot more of a pain than updating IE.

Heard so much about FireFox from many people, so I decide to give it a try and .....................................
find out that Internet Explorer is still my choice. I believe Gate will somehow update IE to version 7, and put the end to any browser out there.

19 yrs old developing Firefox is amazing??????

If he could develope something like"open source Windows", that's what I call amazing. In other word, create a system that's free, and better than windows.

Re: Amazing

Linux user here. I like not having to give BG any more money, but in reality, I was given Win98SE, Win2KPro & MS Office2000. So they didn't cost me anything anyway, BUT, Linux is much more secure, so much more powerful and free. It's just as pretty as Windows (KDE) and all the programs are there. Some people are just scared of change. I was too. Linux is the best operating choice for me at this time. I have a dual boot w/ the Win2KPro and I never boot it up. NEVER! You should try a Knoppix CD for a trial linux experience. It has come a long way since even two years ago.

Maybe...

...I'm just too stupid to realize why Firefox is better. I have it installed, but have not touched it since the day I installed it.

Internet Explorer does its job, plain and simple. My computer is squeaky clean: virus and adware free. (Sure, I might get a piece of adware once every six months, but that's nothing to cry about It's easily dealt with, anyways.)

Firefox is good

Firefox is good but there is a hard drive caching problem, you can hear the hard drive everytime you browse from page to page, with Internet explorer, it just jumps back and forth.

Firefox is Best!

Since using Firefox, I can't imagine going back to Netscape or IE. Secure, easy, and fun to use. Great choice of themes and extensions. The competition has been wiped out!

Humm...

Kind of had a feeling the developer was young, but didn't think he'd be my age. Although it doesn't surprise me since I met a kid once who was 19 (I was 14/15 at the time) and he had already started up his own gaming company, programmed for it, and then sold it for $30mil or so.

not much to be said

not to burst his bubble or anything, but personally i think once firefox "does" go into mainstream, it'll become just as "cheesed" as IE... with plenty of holes to be exploited... i've tried firefox many times, and went back to IE... but that's just me since i know how to properlly protect myself =\

Firefox

Let's not give him credit for developing the browser as I suspect he was part of team; however, with all due respect if he's 19 or 59, I don't care.

It's fast, good and plays nice in the sandbox.

Age?

Agree! Who cares about the age... lets hope that he stays in the team, and continue the development of such a great poduct!

BTW: I stopped using IE 2 years ago when I got Mozilla from a friend... Today I still use mozilla browsers, Fifefox on my Mac, Firefox on my Fedora box, and Mozilla on my winxp.

Age Press

Age press is somewhat obnoxious as it obscures the fact that this person was merely one of many involved in firefox, calling him a 'firefox architect' is somewhat of a stretch...

I'll believe it when I see it

From the interview:

Blake Ross says,
"...I think it's certainly a fair statement that we need to keep backwards compatibility in mind moving forward. Prior to 1.0, it was acceptable to break existing Firefox extensions and themes as we worked to build up the architecture for those features. Going forward, we will be careful to ensure that those continue to work or degrade gracefully."
I hope what he's saying ends up being the case. It's been a royal pain in the ass waiting for many extensions to catch up to the current Firefox release.
