GPON tech and better set-tops...
(old news - 11:30AM Friday Sep 29 2006)
tags: Video · business · hardware · telco
Dave Burstein's analysis of Verizon's Fios statements are worth a read. "Verizon has extraordinary things coming, although nearly none are part of this morning's announcement, which mostly repeated old news with a few optimistic projections. What they have on the way is amazing, even if they didn't discuss it today." He's talking about things like the company's migration to GPON fiber technology, as well as cable-boxes in the future that let users move any media, anywhere in the house (something we touched on earlier this week).

Me too.

I can walk down the street and almost touch it, but they're in the early stage of the deployment in my area...

I can walk down the street and touch it, in fact i'm surrounded by so much fiber that I could knit a sweater. It's been 2 years, yet I still can't get it...

You might be waiting a long time. It's not cheap (couple thousand dollars) and it's going to take some places up to 15 years to get it.

If you live in a suburban neighborhood, you'll get it within 5 years. If you live in a "standout" suburban area like a NYC Suburb, you'll get it in 2 years or less.

I'm not worrying, I got a couple million dollars to buy my own fiber if I wanted. haha.

Re: FIOS

living in the city proper I was wondering if TWC dropped Manhattan residents back to 5000 down because Verizon decided they're in no hurry to deploy Fios here.... anyone have any insight here?

Same here, still waiting...and waiting, and waiting...

But I'll at least have something to hold me over in about 1 week. Cox is finally fricken upgrading their speeds in Roanoke, VA to 12 Mpbs/1 Mbps. I was a little disappointed in the upstream upgrade, but the downstream upgrade will kick much ass

plan to open the set top to all the video over the net

They're still talking download from Net to PC and then media sharing from PC to DVR right? That is, they're not talking about direct from Net to TV, right?

this can be good, if done RIGHT

there would be no real reason to keep the storage part of a "dvr" in the settop anymore.. but the ability of ALL settops to push and pull content is KEY to being "Better" than anything cable-tv has today. Eventually cablecos will jump on the bandwagon... its a matter of time!

Blah blah

Yea, yea, FIOS. So amazing you will be able to download anything and beam yourself to far off places. They can even deliver pizza through it!

All they are doing is trying to keep the investors happy and keep people from hemmoraging away to cable.

Check out the three news articles today!! All about fiber!
I have both Fios and RR (cable internet). I can tell you it's no contest. And cable is more expensive here.

You have no idea what you't talking about!

That's probably true, if I had the top tier I would have no use for the speed.(not doing any peer to peer) Fact is at the lower end it was about the same as Comcast. The email never worked and it failed DSLR line quality tests. I'm sure I'll be on it eventually, I have fiber to the house I'll give them a more time to smooth things out.

You do know that the shareholders and investors are basically bullshit at Verizon for dumping all their money into the FIOS roll-out, right?

I have it and yet...

I don't.

I've the 15Mbs package yet it still is a PPPoE connection. They don't offer the IPTV package where I am (and still have yet to give a timeframe when they will).

And speed doesn't mean much if everyone else is going the same. Or that some sites are slow, in general. Or that sites don't have caching or mirrors.

Re: I have it and yet...

i have it here in Newtown and the 15/2 speed is as advertised. Only problem was when we lost electricity for several hours. Had to reboot the FIOS by pulling out battery and then putting it back in. Service is stable and support by Verizon has been excellent. Wish i could get it in my office in Ewing Twp, NJ.

But you have 15mbps of solid connection. My 10mbps cable gets unreliable under heavy use sometimes, especially BitTorrent.

cableties: call 8883397333 (direct to any of their FSC's)
ask for an NT if need be, a CSR may not see your concern.

Any NT will understand that PPPoE is substandard but they usually have to have a reason to switch it.

A NT should be able to switch you without any issues. (if you have an actiontec, maybe tell them you hate it and you want to use your own linksys but you want to use DHCP or something like that)

IPTV, is a francise problem, bitch at your local gov't for not allowing them to put in video
