The last hurrah before official release
(old news - 06:49PM Wednesday Jun 09 2004)
tags: software
Users in our Software forum (thread includes screenshots) put the final release candidates for both Mozilla 1.7 and Firefox 0.9 through their paces. This new feature list breaks down the significant changes in these most recent versions. The upcoming official release of Mozilla version 1.7 will take the role of 1.4, and will be the foundation for the release of Firefox 1.0. As we mentioned in April, AOL is dusting off the Netscape Communicator suite, and will release a new version based on the updated Mozilla innards.

Re: This is awesome

Well of course! Soon, your browser will come with more crap than your Sunday paper! Today's software is SO bloated with features that SHOULDN'T be there in the first place! Why do we have pop-ups, etc.? Why do we even need more crap added to the browsers to divert less than half of them?

We SHOULD be focusing on creating a new standard of a web language, or revamping HTML, so that pain-in-the-behind things like non-ending pop-ups, etc. would become obsolete!

Sorry, but I'm not up for browser's with mouse gestures, pop-up stoppers, etc. (since most aren't that effective anyhow). I'd rather run a simplistic browser with speed and reliability...

Re: This is awesome

HAHHAAHAHAHA
you're funny
So what you're saying is that because there shouldn't be pop-ups in the first place, I should just lay back and take it? I think I'll get a browser with a pop-up blocker, thanks.
You go create a new standard of web language. I'll stop those annoying pop-ups.
If you knew ANYTHING about Firefox, you would know the whole premise is LESS is more. it comes pretty bare and allows you to add just the features you want.

Get bent.

Re: This is awesome

I DO know something about FireFox... and that is I've installed it on my PC about a dozen times over the course of 2-3 years. EACH time, I uninstalled it after I found that it couldn't render some pages properly!

You can blame the sites HTML coding all you want; however, IE had NO problem rendering the site.

Thank you, but I'll stick to my IE.

Re: This is awesome

this is why there is an extension for Firefox designed specifically to let you view the site in IE just by right-clicking
Internet Explorer has too many security holes for me.
If you actually spent some time resolving issues you would know this. So far I haven't encountered a site worth much that has a problem
understand that firefox is still in the pre-1.0 stage and that those VERY FEW bugs are being worked out now.

Yes, but this problem seems to happen only with XP and HP together, or so my experience has been. Which I really can't explain. Was just wondering.

Perhaps, have you tried re-installing shockwave?
Maybe, there is some odd bug/"feature" that is part of the default system image from hp?

While you're creating/redefining a new web language, make sure it's implemented properly by lazy webmasters who could care less about "standards" (the same webmasters that designed the page FireFox couldn't render.)
W3C said pages & post the outcome.

Enjoy IE (the same browser that has already been dropped by Microsoft as a standalone product,) I'll enjoy the alternative (Opera in my case,) and all the benefits/features that you are hoping will get added to SP2.

btw, Opera & Mozilla render pages faster than IE.

Are You running a Mozilla build? I run Firefox, and haven't seen a pop-up in so long, I forgot that people had to "deal" with them.

Don't tell me, Internet Exploiter is the "solution", right? ROTFLMAO.

Firefox and the other Mozilla builds ROCK! Period.

I ran Opera before Firefox, so its been a reeeeeally long time since I've seen a pop up.

Speaking of Mozilla, I've always wondered what the difference was between Firefox and the Mozilla builds. I've never installed the others, I was just wondering.

You simply need to update your extensions to the newest versions, as Firefox won't accept older versions of said extensions.

IE RIP

Firefox and Thunderbird are way ahead of the game and I enjoy seeing IE playing catch-up. Popup blocking, shockwave, and java control have been in Mozilla and Firefox for quite some time. IE is a little too late and the browsers of the future are based on innovation like the creators of Firefox and Mozilla have incorporated. If problems crop up with Mozilla, Firefox or Thunderbird there is always a whole slew of people willing to help and fixes and patches are hours or a few days away. When was the last time you could say that about IE? I have been using Firefox for over a year and Thunderbird 3/4 of that time I am truly a convert. IE is bloated with no way to remove any of it easily. Sure you can overlay it to give it better functionality, but now it is more bloated. Firefox and Mozilla as a base package is 1/3 the size of IE. No ActiveX unless you want it tells me who takes security seriously. On the rare occasion I find a web page that fails to work in Firefox I can if I want open in with IE.
Extensions are many for Firefox, Mozilla, and Thunderbird allowing the user to tailor the browser to their likening.
IE. Thank you know I think I will keep my Firefox. I will admit to being a WinXP user yet am on the way towards Linux. All things in time.

Anticipating the 1.0

I've used Mozilla exclusively for the past year, and I haven't looked back. Even websites like my bank are viewable in Mozilla. Can't wait to give Firefox a run, but I'll wait for the full release, though.

Faster

This new RC is just as fast as IE now. Anyone noticed the speed improvement? Firefox all the way.

Errm...

I've tried both of these releases, as well as Mozilla 1.8 (alpha 1).

Besides the fact that the browsers felt like they spent _less_ time in the UI (meaning: scrolling, resizing, clicking, etc.), which is a *VERY* good thing, everything else felt very... "feh". I'm not sure how to explain it.

Within ~30 minutes of both a Windows developer friend of mine (who is a DIE-HARD FF advocate, after all of the IE flaws being released recently) and myself installing Firefox 0.9 (which still labels itself as 0.8 -- Mozilla 1.8 does the same, claiming 1.7. You'd expect version numbers to be automatically updated during the build process, you know?) we both managed to find found a total of 4 bugs. One of them is absolutely astounding, as I have no idea how it's even occuring in the first place. Someone's cursor/caret mask is quite broken somewhere...

In addition, the "new" Firefox theme is downright ugly. I don't understand why they replaced the old one with the "new" one. Why not just have both? It's just foul all-around...

Otherwise, I myself have two pending Moz/FF bug reports which have been open for quite some time. One of them involves a fix which can't be more difficult than increasing a single number by 1. One of the two has been confirmed by other users, the others remains silent. Plug-in support really isn't where it should be (even with Real Alternative, most people can make Moz/FF spit out an "unstable" dialogue within viewing 4 or 5 video clips on CNN). The installers aren't informative enough (I love how they display nothing while installing, making the end-user go "Is this thing still working? Is it done? What's going on?"). Also, don't forget: uninstalling either of these browsers will uninstall your bookmarks. All I've got to say to that is "...oops, my bad".

My point is, for as "godly" as these browsers are becoming, they STILL have a long way to go. I'd really like to see XUL completely removed from Moz, as it's a dog; all of the translation should be taking care-of during the build phase and NOT done via some realtime-managed pseudo-language.

The good news is that Moz and FF are quickly catching up to the point where they're becoming the "next Netscape Gold" in comparison to IE. I think that the IE development group at Microsoft must be down to 2 or 3 people... we haven't seen a significant IE upgrade in years upon years, folks. The thing has been the same since 4.0 for the most part (do any of you remember IE3.x vs. 4.x on NT4? World of difference...)

All of this is great, but if you want to see where Moz and FF REALLY stand right now, visit the Mozilla Bugzilla page and take a peek. It's downright scary.
