FiOSTV Gets Its Game OnVerizon takes aim at casual game market... ( old news - 11:04AM Friday Oct 05 2007) tags: business · hardware · gamingTipped by myokitis  Verizon says they're going to be offering video games via their FiOSTV service early in 2008. According to the company, users will be able to play light fare like chess and trivia games -- with some titles being free and others being pay-to-play. While the obvious focus at first is on the hugely profitable "casual games" segment, the telco doesn't rule out heavier fare in the piece: Eventually, FiOS TV hopes to also offer "high-twitch" games, such as first-person shoot-’em-up titles that are popular on gaming consoles and personal computers, Strickland said. "We could run Doom or Quake from servers in the network," he said, citing two first-person PC games. "We definitely see multiplayer gaming as an opportunity, because we have low latency in the network."Of course, that's probably more talk than reality, given that Verizon won't be taking on Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo with a set-top DVR anytime soon (though someday integrated partnerships could be interesting). Verizon's current Motorola boxes will tackle most of the massive processing (that's sarcasm) for Bejeweled 2 on Verizon's end, with the boxes rendering the games as a stream.

| FiOS Live Arcade? I wonder if there'd be a market for partnering with Microsoft and/or Nintendo to offer some of the same downloadable content that those companies do on the Xbox Live Arcade/Wii Virtual Console, splitting revenue?
Obviously the game companies would rather sell their consoles, but maybe they could find a way to get some of their content out to people who aren't inclined to buy the console itself. | |

Here's an idea. Offer a game called "Fix My Verizon Bill", a high twitch challenge to jump from one phone holding pattern to another in the hopes of tagging a rep who admits they can't fix your bill right now! Minimum game subscription: 6 months. Game cost....Ah-ha! That's the game's final bonus round.
One oversight, to be corrected in version 2.0 of the IGM (Interactive Game Manager), due Q3 of 2011, is that subscribers whose remotes lack page up/down functionality will only be able to move their first-person game characters in one direction. An un-named Verizon spokesperson stated: "For that tiny minority of gaming customers who require multi-directional game motion, we suggest they buy extra remote controls from our largest competitor: Comcast."
Another conundrum for Verizon is the competition for eyeballs between their Widgets and the Game system. Many customers who currently spend hours exploring the vast array of widgets (another of Verizon's technological miracles), will now focus their energies and eyeballs on the hit 1993 game Doom.
Verizon plans to outsource the "Gaming Guide" information source to their current provider of TV Guide data. Industry analysts feel this may result in some inaccurate customer game selections; occasionally customers choosing Mario from the Game Menu could result in launching 3D Sex Villa instead. | |

| How about a local lineup I wish FiOS would get a local channel lineup in Southeastern Massachusetts or stop bothering me with FiOS TV mailings.
I live 30 miles south of Boston. I do not want to watch New Hampshire TV (40 miles north of Boston).
But they got game!!!

Developers were writing interactive multi-player games which work great on SA set top boxes. From Buzztime, to Passport games, to Cablevisions iO games package, the SA Box has always been the leader in performance and features.
It's about time someone finally harnesses the hidden potential of the Motorola STB and writes some interactive games with full screen color graphics. For years the Motorola boxes have been littered with a clumsy low resolution dos/ windows 3.1 style interface, supporting only a a few on screen colors at one time.
Kudos to Verizon. Let's hope other providers get on the ball and polish the turd Motorola box into a piece of gold. | |

| Give Me Xbox Content Considering Uverse boxes are running Windows CE and already have small games available, I wonder what the potential is there? It couldn't be too much of a hardware leap to be able to open up the original Xbox 1 game lineup on a newer set-top model. That would be an amazing service addition.
But, it's amazing how many people (female?) get addicted to those small end games - like PopTop style Bejeweled games. | |
