19 inch sets getting lost in the bureaucratic jungle...
(old news - 04:53PM Monday Mar 03 2008)
tags: business · telco · trouble · consumers · Verizon FIOS
If you recall, Verizon has been offering new FiOS users a free 19" LCD HD set should they sign up for a new service bundle. Given Verizon's FiOS billing problems, it wasn't too surprising to see our users complaining that the process of actually getting the television wasn't a smooth one. This is how it was supposed to work:
Two to three weeks after all your bundle components are installed and working you will receive a letter in the U.S. Mail. The letter will include a username and password for a website address to redeem the promotion. You must claim your gift award within 45 days of receiving the letter in the mail.
Unfortunately, many users aren't getting those letters, and attempts to have their complaints heard are resulting in a lot of banging against Verizon's sometimes painful phone support systems. The annoyance volume seems to be growing, judging from this Consumerist report. NYC's ABC affiliate also reported on the problem last month.

Re: April fool's

I received my letter right on time, in the mail, no problem. I installed the service on Feb 2 and received the letter today, Mar 3. The letter is dated Feb 25.

It was exactly according to the schedule. Now I will wait until the TV shows up.

You have a choice when you claim the free TV or BB G/C on their website if your relative will ever that letter.

The $200 g/c is undervalue they shoudl at least offer the money to buy your own. Hell at this poitn I'll take credit towards my account...

NYC ABC affiliate

I know that this is off topic but I live in NYC, but is'nt NYC's ABC affiliate ABC?

Not a company other than ABC, if I'm not mistaken they have their Head Quarters here(NYC). As does NBC and Fox(Newscorp).

Sorry to take this off topic.

Lots of problems on the billing side...

Yup-took them 6 months to get my bill right. Had the triple play installed during the 19" TV promo, still no letter. When I called inquiring, I was given an outsourced number to call. When I called that number, the CSR laughed when I said I was told I'd get one. She said "Honey, a lot of people SAY they are supposed to get one. That doesn't mean they are going to..."

Good times. At least my bill is right. One problem at a time...

Just how free is free?

Just shocked it wasn't a "free after rebate" 'scam' where they make you buy this 19" LCD you probably don't need anyway, then stall for as long as legally(and otherwise) possible before giving you that money back.

Bring the TV to the install

Consider the amount of people signing up for FiOS and the amount of TVs they are going through - it is a huge undertaking. What may make more sense, if possible, is have the tech bring the TV or Best Buy card to the install and be done with it as it surely would be cheaper in the long run vs. staffing people dedicated to TV promos, mailing letters and IT cost of having a special system to request your gift.

Nah, then you would have people cancel the next day and keep the TV.

Then the Verizon credit people should ruin the customers credit! If someone would sign up for FiOS and cancel it the next day for a free $200.00 TV, those types on average, likey would not be approved for service without a large deposit – so if they stole the TV they would lose their deposit! Worse case, the credit people ruin their credit.

Certainly, the customer would have to sign that they received the gift and agree with the terms of receipt.

It really shouldn't be so complicated.

then u'd have people saying the tech stole my tv/gc/ect... I got the same responce when iworked installing DirecTv when they was giving away free portable dvd players, i'd have people ask where it is, and i politl had to say i have no idea what promo they got u to sign up with, you ned to call directv to inquire about that.

Can get gift certificate as well

You can substitute (at least here in Mass) a $200 gift certificate for BestBuy. I received my gift certificate and used it as part payment for a new 32" Samsung. A 19" TV is really only suitable in a bedroom and hardly worth it for HD.

haha...

For some reason I knew this was going to happen. The TV they are giving is an inch smaller than both of my computer monitors, but hey, it is a TV so you can't complain. Otherwise, there hasn't been any news going around on why the TVs haven't shown up, so I can't help you guys out with info or anything.

Verizon's response to this issue

NEW ~ Letter to Customers / Sharp TV 4Q Offer

The response to Sharp TVs for the Q4 offer was overwhelming. The delivery dates from Sharp put many customers at the very outer end of our commitment (10 wks from selection online). That isn’t ideal – and it also assumes there are no delays. Verizon has come up with options to get their gift sooner. They can opt for the Magnavox 19” TV or change their selection to the $200 Best Buy gift card. Verizon is sending a letter to these customers this week with instructions on how to make a change.

Of course, the customer has the option of just waiting for the Sharp TV. But there is some risk that we may miss the 10-wk timeline.

If you want to change your selection, you will need to call the phone # in your letter and use the unique customer record code provided. Just follow the prompts to select the option you want.

The reps will not be able to make the selection for the customer – so the direction is to guide them to calling the # in their letter.

Re: Verizon's response to this issue

I had no option for the Magnavox...came home and found out my daughter had signed for it. No notification that the Sharp TV was out-of-stock or anything like that. The Magnavox retails above $350 and didn't get any suck reviews. It works just fine in the FROG for guests.

What a bunch of crap. You should try to call one of those numbers and see what happens. If You hold at least one hour and then do not get transferred to some other department that has nothing do do with the TV offer then you have just hit the lottery. Your reps are liars your system is broken. You should have prepared before the offer was made. I hope someone got fired!!!!

ITsWrong

@verizon.net

I know people who are still waiting since Oct for that letter. They are getting nothing but the run around from Verizon and thats now going on for 5 months. They won't fax or email that letter, so without it... these people have NO chance for anything.

fios TV offer

On October 25th fios was installed after 7 plus hours on the phone with the completely broken Verizon customer service department. I finally received the infamous letter with the password and code to order the Free TV on February 26th. Now we wait 6 to 10 weeks to receive the TV.By the way my bill always shows up on time.

Free TV Deal

I received my letter on time, and received the TV approximately 4 weeks after making my selection. They quoted me 6-10 weeks, and this was about a month ago.. I've been very happy with it, a great HDTV for my bedroom.

I've posted a copy of the letter in the FIOS forum in the thread concerning the free TV deal.

3+ months now...

I signed their ToS on November 19th right in front of the tech that did the install. After getting my first bill I called to inquire about the letter and was told I had never signed up for the Triple Play. This was corrected, I signed the ToS again, and I was told I'd receive the letter in 3 weeks. It has now been well over 3 months since the initial sign-up and I have yet to receive the letter. I've got a friend who signed up 3 weeks ago and just got her letter on Saturday.

Calls to Verizon yield nothing but: "You'll get your letter in 3-4 weeks."

After the numerous problems I've had with the service to begin with, this is just icing on the cake.

Need I say it?

Touting the benefits of fiber optics and getting caught in "RED TAPE" is no way to start a relationship with "NEW CUSTOMERS"... if it's this bad to begin with.. what happens when there are REAL problems, such as billing, service troubles, etc??

Now they're giving out digital cameras.. but the picture customers are seeing of the how the company does business isn't pretty... they need to fix it.

Not born yesterday,

Two Billing cycles later, I got the old "We don't have you in our system"....PLEASE!!

This, even after I went to Verizon's "accept bundle terms" web site immediately after the install.

Makes me wonder who was cashing my checks then?? (sarcasm)

Re: I give up.

I hate calling them but if you got it installed after the 07 it seems those people are getting it sooner than people like me who got it installed during 07. I'm sick and tired of their long hold times. I swear I've been to the bathroom for a long sitting and still came back to hold music...
