Femtocell Industry: 2009 2010 Femtocell's Year Assuming carriers figure out how to offer product value... We've explored how femtocells didn't quite have the year many had planned for them, in some large part thanks to the way wireless carriers priced and marketed (or didn't market) them. The technology essentially places a micro-cell tower in the home extending signal range while easing the burden on local towers by routing phone calls over your broadband connection. So far however, many carriers have only offered the technology to customers who complain about signal issues. Meanwhile, carriers like Verizon managed to strip all consumer value from the concept by having their implementation eat away at your wireless minutes. Not too surprisingly, femto vendors tell the Wall Street Journal femtocell sales will ramp up "dramatically" in 2010, even though more objective analysts say 2010 will still be slower than expected for the technology.

I have wifi at home, so no dealbreaker here. Get 5 bars wherever I am in the house. I didn't pay a dime for it either, because at the beginning I was told I had service at home, came to find out I was roaming. Got this for free, and monthly fee was waived.

P.S. If you have QOS in your router, set the Airave mac addr or the ethernet port to the highest priority so that any heavy traffic on other ports doesn't cause your cellphone calls to stutter. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page

Thanks for the tip, probably should do that as the data line is very active these days (gaming, browsing, whatnot) and is being used by both me and dad. Glad WS decided to upgrade our upload to 786 kbps, now I don't have to worry about stuff like this.

| | | I've had my Airave since August 2008... love it. I don't really need it where I am not now, but since it is free, I'm keeping it. Battery life last a lot longer and when they have football games around the corner I'm not using the overloaded tower. --

| | doubtful.. sometimes its the high cost of upstart vs the benefits & drawbacks of the technology... look at DSL for example.. the ultra high prices and under-delivering of promises killed mass adoption of the technology (not withstanding AT&T's using it as a pivot technology for FTTP later on). there are so many other technologies around.. flavors of 802.11, 3g, 4g, hspda, wimax, lte, etc... | |

look at DSL for example.. the ultra high prices and under-delivering of promises killed mass adoption of the technology Wait, what? DSL, even when it's not used as a last mile for FTTP, has been competitive with cable since it first started rolling out. The only time it wasn't competitive is when cable was also starting and prices were all over the place.
Maybe you live in an undeserved DSL area, but in most urban areas, DSL is just as prevalent, and moreso in places that provide hotspot access.

Maybe in urban areas, but in most rural and less populated areas cable has won. Where I live, the Central Office (AT&T) isn't even equipped with DSL, and even if it was we're around 20,000 cable feet from the CO, however, we have Comcast HSI Blast!(16000/2000). The closest CO with DSL to me is in Ukiah, 9 miles south. -- You've got to stand for something, or you'll fall for anything.

Why should I pay extra for a cellphone tower in MY home? The carrier should PAY ME to have a tower in my home that others can use (I understand most/all femtocells block everyone except you from using them). I pay $ to the carrier for coverage in my house, and everywhere else, if they can't deliver it, screw them. What Verizon should have done was put femtocells on all their payphones, and kept the payphones just to serve as an excuse for femotcells. Verizon used to operate wifi payphones many years ago, just replaced the AP with a femtocell, and upgrade the DSL line to a T1 cough cough SHDSL line.

They already have 120v to them for the ads on them (which is the real reason they are still around). Maybe the FD should lease fire alarm boxes for femtocells.

| | Where is AT&T at? It was said in a press release earlier this year they would have NATIONWIDE rollout to their Femtocell boxes by END OF YEAR.... I guess that is today? Have not seen a peep from them. I think there will be more people using it if they can ever get the product deployed...
If you don't have AT&T, odds are, you don't have a cell phone reception problems anyway so that is why the other vendors are not deploying many!
