Bogus credit card charges finally get attention
(old news - 09:12AM Friday Mar 11 2005)
tags: legal · scam
Several weeks ago we wrote on how our users had begun seeing mysterious charges from "Pluto Data" (or "Pluto Data Nicosia") on their credit card statements; almost sixty thousand visitors viewing our forum thread on the subject. MSNBC is reporting (with a nod toward our forums) that Federal Authorities have begun an investigation into the scam, though they have yet to release any additional information.

Re: Once again our forums...

I was hit by the Pluto Data scam and I contacted a number of federal agencies and news services over the past couple weeks about it. I referred them to this site, so they could verify that there are many of us who've been scammed and take action. Glad to see that the word got out and they're finally investigating!

Re: Once again our forums...

Sent Snopes an email early on to give them a heads up so viewers of the "What's New" portion of the site might be forewarned (and in hopes it would build momentum) since mainstream media hadn't picked it up at that point.

Figured they could have used their investigational resources to at least confirm something was going on and make note of it.

Snopes didn't seem to give a sh!t, just sent a half-assed response with a link to a completely unrelated article. Way to ignore a biggie guys!

Apparently crap like THIS (»www.snopes.com/pregnant/babyexam.asp) is bigger. Not a single mention in their "Scam Report" section either.

This made BBR popular

I just did a google search on Pluto Data Nicosia and the first 5 of 980 listings has BroadbandReports.com listed first on the article. I am wondering if who ever was behind it was also behind the outage that we had here not too long ago.

Re: This made BBR popular

how can a money scammer be related to the downtime of BBR?

Easy. Whoever is behind the Pluto Data scam surely doesn't want people becoming aware of the scam. They'd rather that folks just ignore those charges and let them go through. That won't happen if everyone is warned to be on the lookout for Pluto Data charges.

The Pluto Data scammers could have launched a DDoS attack (or used some of their scammed money to hire someone to launch an attack) with the hopes of stopping BBR from spreading the news of the scam.

I'm not saying that that's what happened I really have no clue) or that I have any evidence to support it (I don't), but it is a possibility.

Re: This made BBR popular

It may be, but it was a stupid and fruitless one. A couple days downtime, so friggin what? It just makes more people think that they may be behind it even if they weren't.

Re: This made BBR popular

I agree that it was a stupid and fruitless activity no matter who did it. I hope whoever performed the DDOS attack is caught, but knowing the state of these things it'll probably be tossed in a pile with the other thousands of DDOS attacks and never looked into.

MSNBC uses some freaky coding.
Some security programs/browser settings don't like the way it calls to other URLs, etc.
Kinda funny it has the name Microsoft attached to it.

Anyway kudos Justin and his the team and the members for exposing this scam.

Re: Yeah

No doubt. Why the hell does has it taken them so long to get something going on this? I hope DHS is more on top of things, I'd hate to think Justin was responsible for National Security too.....though maybe we'd be safer.

Why reation time is so slow?

I do not post often, but this site is a wealth of information waiting to be unearthed. While I am not leading authority on anything (Sam Adams lager not included), I look towards this website for timely and informative information and articles. While I will admit, due diligence is very important, not letting this "company" get away with the charges is far more important. At this point in the turmoil, if the media is not doing its' job of informing individuals, then we must tell everyone who has a Credit and/or Bank card about what to look out for and what is going on. hopefully they will tell other and the will tell others and it will propagate until someone or company with mass media outlet will let the masses know. I for one told everyone I know with any type of purchasing plastic about this fraudulent company, I hope everyone who is concerned is doing the same.
PS: For the record, I am writing this at 4:30 am and I am under the influence. Please forgive any spelling errors. Lets get the info out! And hang the perpetrators by their scrotums!!!! Scum sucking bastards they are!!!!
