story category FCC's Martin Wants to Approve AT&T Spectrum Purchase
Pushing to make the 2007 transaction happen quickly

Back in October, AT&T purchased a significant amount of 700 MHz spectrum from Aloha Partners. When completed, the transaction would make AT&T the company holding the most spectrum excluding acquisitions made during the FCC auction (which began this week). At the time of the purchase announcement, AT&T said that they hoped to have all necessary government approvals to close the deal within 6-9 months. Less than four months later, FCC Chairman Kevin Martin is pushing to get that deal approved by the rest of the FCC staff. He needs two votes out of four to make the deal happen but no decision has yet been made.

AT&T could own most 700 Mhz spectrum if approved

Looks like Martin is trying to give AT&T a leg up on the auction of 700Mhz spectrum by handing over to them almost all the 700Mhz spectrum already out there. And AT&T didn't have to bid for this spectrum. They just bought it from Aloha. If they then get the C Block 700Mhz spectrum in the auction, then AT&T would control most of the best bandwidth in the US.

Martin is yet another Bush appointed croney; nothing to be expected here.

"Before becoming a commissioner, Martin was a Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy. He has also served as the Deputy General Counsel to Bush-Cheney 2000, on the Bush-Cheney recount team in Florida, and on the Presidential Transition."

And probably sit on it while milking their GSM network.

Exactly. I've never heard Aloha Partners offering any service over their spectrum, why did they have it? Does the current 700mhz auction have mandatory build out rules attached to it?

How did Martin go from a CLEC pleaser to a nice guy to the Telcos? He wasn't before he was Chairman. Maybe the DOJ should start investigating this guy's wallet.

I doubt he is getting any money directly. More likely he will get support and funding when he runs for political office in North Carolina when he leaves the FCC.

Maybe he'll have to run for office in hell first. If he's not gay and has a wife, maybe she's getting plum work?

In my opinion this is due in large part to the current debate over granting AT&T immunity. I've always felt that if immunity isn't granted the government would find another way to cover AT&T's costs (and let them settle everything out of court). This could be at least part of what I expected to happen.

Seal all the trials and their verdicts for national security, plaintiffs squawk after winning or loosing, straight to Guantanamo they go.

EDIT: If you want to keep things constitutional, straight to ADX Florence they go for life.

Without a criminal trial? You self-styled freedom fighters have funny ideas about what's constitutional.

So this is it...

The completion of the Deathstar. This shouldn't surprise anyone that Martin is pushing this.

Eggs and Baskets

The amount of spectrum allowed each carrier needs to be capped, or regulated.
Twould be very unhealthy for the market if one carrier was allowed to "Rule them All" with the majority of the spectrum.

Paid the Kevster and lobyists enogh!

If we have to pay any more my portfolio might drop. Enough is enough, give us the spectrum our lobyists paid for. Now!

Corruption is obvious

The corruption at the FCC is sickening..
Trying to give the image of fairness while continually giving the vote to the $$...

FCC needs a RE-vamp..
Maybe we should put a qualified individual in the chairman position?

Re: Corruption is obvious

It's funny, speaking of $$, Chairman Martin and the FCC are on a regulatory crusade against the cable industry, which in comparison to the phone industry is competitive, yet continue to deregulate the AT&T, Verizon and the rest of the bells.

Meanwhile the telcos use this deregulation to fleece consumers (by charging for services like call waiting, which costs the phone companies virtually nothing) and exploit their monopoly powers. That is the real scandal, someone should look into that.
