As agency pushes for new wireless broadband technology

An FCC public notice (pdf) indicates that the agency is looking for a few good men, women or companies -- to act as database managers for the agency's white space broadband efforts. White space broadband allows for the unlicensed creation of inexpensive wireless broadband service by using the spectrum partially freed from the migration to digital television. However, the technology has a significant potential for interference (particularly in urban areas), so the agency is working on efforts to keep interference at bay by maintaining a database used by such devices to detect and avoid rival technologies:
The database will tell a TV band device which TV channels are vacant and can be used at its location. The database also will be used to register the locations of fixed TV band devices and protected locations and channels of incumbent services that are not recorded in Commission databases. The Commission decided in the Second Report and Order to designate one or more database administrators from the private sector to create and operate TV band database(s), which will be a privately owned and operated service.
The private operators of these databases will of course be paid for these efforts. Companies looking to become database administrators must file an application before June 4, 2010. The FCC is inviting comments on the proposals until February 3.

As long as some really, really, stupid law isn't passed that wipes out the independent ISP, then yes you have a long wait.

I'm expanding my wireless ISP into another state now, but unless you live in TN or KY it's probably going to be a long time before I'm anywhere in your part of the US. I've also been working with other independent wireless ISP to expand to other states. Really, right now; about the only thing that will jump-start wireless ISP is for people to band together, get the funds and research up, and do it yourself I'm afraid.

So very true and so damned sad. I think these corps should be pointed out by consumers and made to feel unpatriotic as possible.

Wrong Date

That's JANUARY 4, not June 4, for you mere mortals.
