Crooks steal camera, say cheese, wind up online, lose jobs...

I'm not quite as enamoured by the Eye-Fi (combo SD card and Wi-Fi transmitter) as some, perhaps because I don't find the calorie expenditure required to attach a cable to my PC all that high. But Reuters reports the card does come in handy as a crime buster. One woman had her digital camera stolen when on vacation in Florida, but the internal Eye-Fi card transmitted pictures of the thieves to her PC after they decided to take self-portraits, then walk past an open hotspot.

Hmm, we have Back TO My Mac and now EyeFi. The thing in common? Dumb crooks. Gotta love 'em

I agree...I don't see anything at all wrong with this article. I personally find it amusing.

BTW - the thieves were caught .....

... but the woman let them off the hook and didn't press charges, though they did lose their jobs from the restaurant she left her camera in.

If it was me, I'd probably had pressed charges and put them thru the criminal justice system even if they would have only been sentenced to probation. At least they would have had a criminal record. Being that stupid they should have been prosecuted.

P.S. > the only reason the pics transmitted was because the woman had set the card to hook up to the ubiquitous Linksys SSID with no password(her home system) and the hotspot was setup the same way.

We don't agree on a whole lot, but I completely agree here. Prosecute them, take mug shots then document identifying marks and fingerprints. Make them spend a night or two in jail and do a couple hundred hours of community service.

I've been a victim of an unprosecuted theft. They got everything that wasn't nailed down ... neighbors got a description of their car (fake tags) and called the police while it was in progress ... but absolutely nothing was done. The crooks apparently had never been fingerprinted, even though a few fingerprints and a palm print (felons only in NC) were lifted from my house.

I'm not familiar with the Eye-fi cards, but I do like the fact that their top-of-the-line model geotags. I would hope that people with geotagging capabilities on their Eye-fi cards set theirs up with a little bit more security than this lady--imagine your family photos being transmitted willy-nilly with geotags--stalking someone just got a lot easier.

Creepy.

Re: BTW - the thieves were caught .....

They aren't just transmitted anywhere though. You setup an account with a service, say photobucket for example. When the camera gets an internet connection, it uploads the photos TO YOUR ACCOUNT. The Linksys SSID thing is just an easy way to use the world's free wifi system to get the files to your account.

It was the card that did this, not the camera, if the card hadn't been in the camera, they most likely would have never caught these clowns.

Happened to a Macbook user too

She used Back to My Mac to snap a picture. She recognized the dork from a party the week before and went to the police. The police went to the guy's apartment and found her notebook along with a bunch of other stolen stuff.

Good article

I found this very interesting.
The article mentions software to track lost/stolen Blackberrys. I am looking into that for myself.

Thank you Karl

Sounds like a staged thing from Eye-Fi

They would go and leave the camera somewhere and wait to see what happens. In the process, gain a story with it.

I'm not saying that stealing is ok, but if you leave something at a public place and I find it, I can get arrested for keeping it? What ever happened to losers weepers, finders keepers. Last time I checked, electronic devices like cameras don't have personal information to try and return the item.

why can't it be like the old days when people were honest. you find something you give it to the police or the place you found it. they keep it 30 days and if no one claims it..... it the finders!! then again you have to deal with the corrupt employees you return it to. :sigh: no more honest people in the world
