New Symantec report says rise in broadband use the reason...

Europe has now overtaken North America as the "King of Spam," according to an annual report on spam (pdf) by Symantec. According to the anti-virus company, approximately 44 percent of all spam email now claims to originate from Europe versus 35.1 percent claiming to originate from North America. The group says the spike is thanks to an explosion of broadband use in Europe, and of course the related growth in the number of broadband-connected PCs being hijacked as spam relays.

The OECD report published June 2007 notes that while the United States has the highest number of broadband users at 66 million, Europe holds six out of the top ten countries
for broadband users in the world. This phenomenal growth in percent spam originating in Europe may also be considered when you look at countries ranked by broadband subscribers per 100 inhabitants – European countries take eight of the top ten places.
The report is chock full of other spam-related tidbits, including the fact that the average size of a spam e-mail has declined.

I get a lot ...

of spam from both China and Eastern Europe. My ISP catches most of it and puts into a convenient junk mail folder so I can peruse it and spot the false positives. I think I receive 400-500 minimum each and every day, and I have learned that there are 13,453,456+ ways to misspell Viagra and Cialis.... heh heh

I wonder what is being done worlwide to go after the bots themselves and have the owners remove the malware! What would someone say if his ISP contacted him with that kind of information?

spam

The way the internet is going, you will have to have a license to have an operating system that lets you run whatever program you want. Otherwise, you get Web Appliance which can't be hacked, or much more difficult (run it in a Virtual Machine). Most people would think there is an electric powered robotic gerbil running in a wheel in their computer, and they take the monitor and just the monitor to a repair shop since "thats" the computer. Or hold spam relays legally liable, when you get sued, you will learn how to not be a spam relay/use a web appliance/use anti-spyware/antivirus, but then spammers will move to 3rd world countries with no such laws then. Then we could just block all email from countries with no such anti-spam policies.
