Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Diego
(old news - 01:57PM Monday Sep 11 2006)
tags: dsl · business · VoIP
Earthlink is deploying their ADSL2 and line-powered voice bundles in three new markets: Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Diego. Line-powered voice needs no consumer side hardware, works through every jack in the home, and receives its power from the jack just like regular phone service. The service functions much like typical POTS until it hits Covad/Samsung DSLAMs, with traffic routed over Covad's nationwide UNE-L network, avoiding bell infrastructure.

The early kinks in the technology were worked out between Covad technicians and our users in our forums. The Earthlink website notes that the $50 bundle includes 1.5Mbps ADSL2 and 500 minutes per month of local and long-distance calling. To get the tastier 8Mbps & unlimited VoIP bundle ($70), you need to be within 5,000 feet from your central office.

"We don't offer TV," Earthlink's Stepehn Howe tells the Chicago Tribune. "But someone who takes our $50 phone and DSL service can get satellite TV for another $45, and pay about the same as the Comcast offer. But this is our standard rate, not a promotional rate that goes up later."

Bring it on!

The more options, the better. Back before I switched to DSL I had Earthlink as a dial-up ISP and found them to be the best dial-up provider I had ever used.

Be nice to see this option expand into other markets.

5000 feet?

within 5000 feet to get 8/1 - too bad.
They are not going to get too many customers.

Re: 5000 feet?

They're being conservative then because in general ADSL2 will give a sync of 12megs at 5000ft

Couldn't EL do what At&T but by using there cable to feed the signal at further distances than hook to the copper when the fiber/coax hits the home/apartment?

Re: 5000 feet?

Earthlink doesn't own any facilities. This is via Covad and they don't have remote terminals or "cable" either.

Unless you know the facts and consider that the facilities were bought with EL's investment of Millions into Covad for the LPV system. LOL

Call Covad and ask them who else you can get their LPV & ADSL2+ bundle through. Let me know what Covad tells you.

I had 8M/1M service running at the full 8M/1M at my house in 2001 using standard ADSL when Sprint was offering the ION service. My house is 6500ft from the central office.

On the other hand, its been 5 years, and I still can't get service that fast!

Welcome To Chicago

I've been waiting for this!

...Now, I just wish Covad would start offering this directly 'cause I don't like Earthlink all that much.

That won't happen ELNK basically bought the equipment for Covad to offer this service......Covad is fast becoming a subsidiary of ELNK

Just called them. It is still not available in San Diego, despite the ad. And they have trouble locating my house by address, were asking the the land line phone number, which I do not have.

The deal here is?

I guess I must be missing something. But, how is the 1.5 Mbps package a deal?

Re: The deal here is?

Why, you get to stick it in the eye of the ILEC with a substandard, overpriced offering from a CLEC! Fight the good fight! Put up with horrid service on principle!

So far people are mostly staying away in droves due to the price and the fact that Earthlink can't bail fast enough to save it's sinking ship.

Frankly, Doc, that is a fight that needs to be fought.

Your favorite ILEC sells its DSL at a loss to kill competition. It's all a lie. The true cost is higher because resellers pay MORE than retail customers for ATT DSL. ATT also claims that the ISP is somehow a different legal entity than the phone company...when everyone except the regulators ATT keeps in its pockets know the truth.

The real price of DSL, alas, is much closer to what Covad is charging...mostly because the tons of outdated regulation the FCC insists on keeping around.

It is high time the ILECs be broken into pieces...give the infrastructure to local municipalities...and make all LECs, the I and the C kind lease the facilities from local government...level playing field for all.

Re: The deal here is?

Knock yourself out. I prefer to live in the real world. You can keep your fantasy "government is good" life far away from the bright lights and harsh economic climate.

In case you were sleeping for the last six years, Ameritech was required to separate the ISP and the DCLEC and the ILEC by the very regulators you seem to think have the inclination, ability or energy to provide you with your idyllic broadband utopia where the government owns the facilities and everyone leases access.

You have no facts to back up your claims, so you keep shrieking louder and louder. Guess what? The rest of us know better.

My "favorite ILEC"? You can certainly do better than that. Or maybe you can't.

Re: The deal here is?

Apparantly I don't because I am still for one nationwide network that all providers can access to reach any customer in any market for any service they want to offer.

Call me crazy, but I think this is the only "fair" way that will actually be beneficial to the consumers of this country and not the greedy corp/stock holders.

Re: The deal here is?

I'd be afraid the government agency needed to run such a nationwide network would be just as greedy as corp/stock holders, but with no incentives to compete either.

I'd also be afraid to rely on a government agency to repair, upgrade, and invest in newer infrastructure. (You think big corporations are slow to invest...)

Also, with who's money would the government be using to run and administrate such a network. Not mine I hope.

Re: The deal here is?

I didn't expand on my whole thought. I think this network should be ran by 1-3 companies with great government oversite. I would prefer a private company, but a corporation would be fine as long as the oversight is there.

It's not in the suburbs of Chicago

Sorry.

Based on the information provided, EarthLink Voice services
do not appear to be available in your area at this time. You may add your contact information to the Priority Waiting List so that we can contact you once service becomes available in your area.

Sorry, Voice is not available in your area.

Therefore, EarthLink is not able to provide Voice access at
this time.

Boy, are they ever sorry!

Re: It's not in the suburbs of Chicago

Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, San Diego and Washington, D.C are the new cities.

Timmn; I would recommend calling in to check for serviceability @ 1-800-EarthLink...they can provide you more information on your serviceability status. Your serviceability is dependent on many factors and the sales reps can look at those to determine if you truly are serviceable or now.

Thanks,
Phil
