Earthlink Answers the Phone
Unveils details surrounding telephony package
(old news - 01:00PM Thursday Mar 13 2003)
tags: dsl · business
While it was confirmed that Earthlink and internet telephony provider Vonage had stuck a deal recently (first scooped by our friend Ben Silverman at the New York Post), they were quiet on the exact details until today. According to today's press release, the service includes free unlimited local, regional and long distance calling for $39.99 per month, and offers features like voicemail, caller ID, call waiting, call return and call forwarding. At the moment there's no 911 service, but that's supposedly in the works. You can find out additional details about the new VOIP service at Earthlink's recently launched Unlimited Voice Website.

Simple question

What's the difference between going through Earthlink and signing up with Vonage Directly?

Good question. Comparing the two:

»www.vonage.com/

»www.unlimitedvoice.com/

The only difference I see is that Vonage offers more plans....I would be curious to see the back end of this agreement.

Re: Simple question

The only thing I see is that Earthlink is doing more advertising for this product then Vonage did. It looks like they stripped the whole Vonage name out of the whole deal to make it look like its really through Earthlink. Usually when Earthlink resells a service, there's at least a dollar or two in savings.

I believe you have to have a BB connection in place for the service to work. Vonage doesn't sell BB access, just piggybacks on existing BB service.

Re: Simple question

i guess thats true. But whats to keep me from signing up for Earthlink and then Vonage... or another ISP and then Vonage?

What if im deciding between earthlink and another ISP? Same price, same speeds, and I'm also looking to get Vonage service. If it were a buck or two cheaper going through earthlink, i'd probably get it.

My question is... whats the incentive?

Re: Simple question

You are better off signing thru Vonage directly as you can get atleat 39.99 referral credit if you get yourself referred by someone who is an existing Vonage customer.
There are MANY existoing Vonage customers who are posting on various VOIP borads in the hope they will get a referral.. so search the VOIP forum and you will find many such folks.

Seems to me that the benefit isn't directly for the consumers as it is EarthLink and Vonage, the average consumer won't know about Vonage, and will be leery of them, but does know the EarthLink name, and is more likely to sign up with them. It provides a significant potential user base increase that can not be easily gotten otherwise.

Re: Simple question

Thats what I thought. I guess they're just paying for a name. I think Earthlink would have advertised this sub-product more then Vonage advertised their own product

Re: Earthlink answers the phone

You can't get rid of SBC otherwise you would lose your DSL service. You could lower it to the $10-15 plan a month then get Vonage.

Unless vonage can keep it up. From my understanding it's working off your broadband connection. Now if you cable you are good. If you have DSL you can't get rid of your local Telco/ILEC SBC, Verizon, etc.

Why not just pick up a cheap cell phone for 911? i dont think you even need a service plan with a cell provider to use 911 on a cellphone.

Re: Hmm...

Actually Charter offers their own digital telephone service in some areas. They probably don't advertise it heavily because it isn't available in many places yet. Don't know if it is any good or not, but I've seen it on their homepage for several months now.

I wonder if.....

I wonder, when a Charter or Comcast customer calls wanting the service (you know it's bound to happen) whether Earthlink will admit that the customer can obtain the same service by going directly to Vonage?

@151.121.x.x

Love the service

I have used vonage for 2 weeks now and love it, sound quality is good, no drop outs, not quite as good as a regular phone quality, but better than a cell phone, I am cancelling my regular phone shortly. I am using it over comcast and have had no issues. The 25.99 plan with 500 min of long distance saves me a ton of money, as soon as they add an easy way to get a second line without a whole seperate plan I will be really happy.

shhhh

@66.80.x.x

Re: Love the service

I don't make many phone calls, I don't have a land line, my cheap cell phone plan only includes 30 minutes of calls, which is usually enough. Is there a Vonage alternative to phone lines, not PCs, without a monthly plan, where I would pay just for the calls I make?
