Still insists 100 by year's end...

With the addition of six new channels today (including Cartoon Network and Fox Business Channel) DirecTV says they're now offering 72 HD channels. The company continues to promise they'll offer 100 HD channels by the end of the year, and for the moment leads other HD providers by a wide margin. Are they worth watching? Who knows, but cable and telcoTV operators are struggling to keep up with the satellite provider -- who says more are coming:
The DIRECTV 11 satellite will be launched early next year to support further HD expansion. With the two satellites, DIRECTV will have the ability to deliver 150 national HD channels and 1,500 local HD and digital channels in addition to new advanced programming services for customers.

If you recall, DirecTV made the decision some time ago to re-purpose their Ka-band Spaceway satellites for HD programming instead of broadband. Users interested in the new HD channels need to upgrade to the MPEG-4 capable HR-20. I upgraded over the weekend to the HR-20 from an older "DirecTiVO" unit and was pleasantly surprised.

Now bring on the broadband downloads.

It isn't HD-Lite anymore as long as you have a new Mpeg4 receiver.

They are still hd-lite even with MPEG-4 worse than that most of these new channels are in stretch-O-vision which really sucks.

Ah - the "HD-Lite" naysayers....

You can't prove they're HD-Lite.
And I can't prove they're not.

Nobody has yet been able to "break the stream" to find out what exactly the resolution and bitrates are. Certainly, it's only a matter of time before there is proof one way or the other. The semi-official position is that the networks are 1920x1080 and locals are 1440x1080. Based on side-by-side comparisons of a cable provider and D* - they look the same.

As for "stretch-o-vision" - that's not DirecTV's fault. They're a re-broadcaster - passing on the content as it is provided to them. The guilty parties are the specific channels/network providers themselves - nothing D* can do about that.

Actually there is hardware and software than can view the bitrate and resolution etc, of both DirecTV and DISH and the findings are posted on many reliable forums, DirecTV uses 1280 X 1080i on most of it's channels DISH is using 1440 X 1080i on most of it's HD Channels, bitrate various constantly based on many factors. You need to check your facts before you make posts about things you obviously know nothing about.

Please feel free to supply any link to "the facts" showing where someone has measured bitrate and resolution of D*'s MPEG4 HD channel(s) off the D10 satellite (i.e. the "new national HD channels).

USA		 Show links with CURRENT information. And yell at each station. The stations is who decides what gets stretch or not. Some channels have done it right ( SciFi HD), others suck. Even others sometimes suck and sometimes are okay.

 The bitrate of Directv's new MPEG4 broadcast has not yet been determined, not with hardware or software as David803 some how belives. There a strong rumors that it is in fact 1920x1080 as Directv is in court being sued for false advertizing on thier past bitrates with MPEG2 incoding

Same here. It seems the only ones saying HD Lite are the ones who don't have the service. They look great. Now if we could only get the broadcasters to start delivering on the HD (here's looking at you TBSHD and SciFiHD).

SciFi Friday is in HD. Atlantis, Bionic Woman, Flash... It's a start. At least they don't crop and stretch... Everything seems like it's in the aspect ratio it was intended to be in. That's all we can hope for.

that's not necessarily TBS' fault any more than it is DirecTV... you can't make gold out of silver, you can't necessarily broadcast a 15 year old episode of seinfeld as HD....

I can forgive a Seinfeld as not being HD, but when you show a movie like Shrek and they call it HD when the station is actually upconverting the SD version of the film, it looks pretty bad.

I wonder how Dish Network will respond to this? Then too, I'm fairly sure (not 100% sure though) that Dish Network's HD content isn't compressed as much.

oh well...I still think the price for HD is too much. (with Dish at least).

I have not seen so much as a whimper about Dish coming out with more HD channels since Direct started this campaign. This is a case where no news seems to be no news.

Well... Details man!

Was your old unit "hacked" in any way to allow transferring and saving content?

Does the new unit offer any networked features that legitimately let you pull content from the DVR and watch it on a PC and/or burn to DVD?

I'm so tempted to move, but I make fairly extensive use of the ability to pull shows off the box and save them for later. At the very least, I'd need to be able to put a way bigger drive in the new DVR so I could keep things around longer... is it mod-able in that way?

Yep, the new DVR has a port on the rear for a eSATA drive, but I personally have not tried it. Checkout »dbstalk.com where there is an entire forum devoted to direcTV's DVR's. Many people over there have used it with success and if you search you will find many tricks and tips for the DVR.

The HR20 has ethernet - but it is there to allow "DirecTV On Demand" features - downloading of content to the unit to allow later playback. As linked on the front page article (to an earlier article), this capability is currently in testing and may show up in national release before the end of the year. The network capability can also be used to play music and display other content if you have a Windows Media Server configured on the same sub-net. Rumor has it that "multi-room viewing" is being worked on (sharing content between networked receivers) but it's pure rumor at this time.

db, thanks for all that info. Maybe this christmas I should get myself an HD set... We have Comcast locally (hence how I ended up with DTV again)...

So, um what kind of filesystem is on those external drives? I assume the content is all encrypted a-la the unhacked DTivo. Might we assume someone, somewhere is looking for a way to decrypt what's on the drives? As far as the box itself, has anyone gotten to the point of getting any type of console access?

Could not get DirectTV here and suck with cablevision.. at least all Direct TV needs to do is launch another bird.. Cablevision on the other hand is trying to figure out ways to save bandwidth.

yeah but sooner or later we are going to have to pay somehow.. I really don't watch any of the Voom channels that cablevision has to offer.. maybe if the programming was a bit better I would watch it a bit more.

So i watch equator hd all time. especially that show about the green environmentally conscious cars
9 they had that record breaking motorcycle on the show) just because you dont like the voom channels doesnt mean everybody else hates them also.

compare how many channels we have for free to what people have who are paying for them you will see we are in better shape then you think.

Besides the fact that cablevision has been trying and slowly expanding the amount of hd channels

yes we might get the channels slower then most but ill accept that trade off since i dont have to pay for them.

It Aint' HD-Lite anymore!

The new mpeg-4 compressed channels are not in HD lite any more, they are at 1920x1080i. However, the locals are rumored to be at 1440x1080, but on my 61in. DLP 1080p tele, I can tell no difference between OTA and locals over the satellite as the mpeg-4 compression is more efficient and seems to handle faster motion better than mpeg-2, now of course from what I gather DirecTV pulls the locals in my area directly from the stations before transmission to avoid any recompression, and 720p stations in my area are still delivered in 720p over the satellite. And the quality is much better than our local cable provider (charter), which had frequent dropouts and glitches, ick!

I am absolutely LOVING all these new hd channels. I don't care if they are hd lite or hd bloated, they look great and 100 times better then regular tv.

It is hard as hell to even watch normal tv now! Glad I have 72 channels plus my season ticket in hd as well

Upgraded to the HR-20 over the weekend. Using a 32 inch Norcent LCD TV, bought last year because it was dirt cheap.

Watched the Bears on Fox 32, toggled between DirecTV's HD feed and the OTA feed from the antenna. Virtually no difference in picture quality, DirecTV's HD really looks great and we really have enjoyed it so far. My neighbor has Comcrapstic HD service at his house, spent an hour watching our HD service, and made the call to have DirecTV installed and his Comcrap service yanked out. Comcrap's HD quality around here is awful, full of dropouts and pixelation (probably from over compression on their RG59 trunklines strung all over town from 1981) overpriced, and not worth watching.

Go get 'em, DirecTV!

Only one thing wrong

You can't order a basic package and get all the HD channels. Why can't I just ge the family tier for $29.99 then get all the HD channels not just 5? Even the $45 pakage you only get half the HD channels. WTF?

Obviously if I'm ordering HD I have a HDTV and if I have a HDTV naturally I will want to watch the HD version of channels like ESPN, Food Network, A&E etc etc not the SD versions so why should I have to purchase those too? It's crap like that and other BS like not offerong just Sunday Ticket for those that already have cable and only want the NFL packege and more than willing to hand over $280 to DirectTV if they would offer Sunday Ticket ONLY without having to get other service is why many people like myself are turned off by DirectTV. I'm just going to assume DirectTV hates money.

As far as I know if I want Charter's HD package all I need to get is their basic cable package which is $15 a month. Only bad thing is they have very few HD channels right now.

You'd be WRONG. I have Charter as well ( for internet **sigh** ). You have to Order Digital cable, pay extra for a HD STB. If you want HBO, then you've got to order that. And good luck getting all the channels ( 6?) reliably.

Actually - A co-worker got a deal for basic cable + HD set-top box + HD service for around $35 from Charter. None of the premium HD channels (i.e. no HBO/Cinemax/Showtime/Starz), but all the others (ESPN[2]/NESN/Discovery/locals/etc). Plus he got access to the VOD channels as well.

looks great to me

directv will be the HD leaders for years to come, i have the h20 receiver and all the new channels look awesome! I know time warner has maybe 30 hd channels at teh most, and dish is probably about the same.

Made the switch

I just had DirecTV installed on Sunday 10/14. I got the new HD DVR and I must say I am very impressed. I had Comcast before and made the switch because they do not seem to be in a hurry to add any more HD channels. I was a little skeptical to switch but I have not looked back since.

thats how they get 70 lol, but hey anythign that puts my tv's to it's maximum potential is worth while. On the other side I would rather see true 1080. The quality is much more superb.

Actually, these are national feeds, available to everyone Not spot beams, or only limited to certain areas of the country. Directv is not including the NFL, NBA, or NHL HD channels in their count.

SDV please!!

Cable companies better get on SDV (Switched Digital Video)sooner than later cause if I had a clear view of the south, I would have switched to DirecTV a long time ago. Their offerings seem to just be better than cableco's and less.

Not really an issue to switched video. They just need to move more channels to digital. Every analog channel that goes to digital is enough to add about 2 HD channels. Charter is adding 4 HD channels in my area, coincidently 3 analog channels are going digital.

Switched from Dish to DirecTV last week

My contract was coming up from Dish so I emailed them asking for the details and about their future HD offerings...Here is the response I received...Her grammar is a little poor, but I like the statement of Dish having more HD than DirecTV.

I am happy with all the new "watchable" HD channels. I do think the boxes suck. The navigation and response is horrific. I will give that to DISH. Their boxes where pretty stable.

From Dish -
"Thank you for your email. We do apologize for the inconvenience. Your
contract will be over on 11/19/2007 and the cancellation fee is $13.33
per each months remaining from the contract.

We are working to add more HD channels to line up card and at this time
we have HD channels more than Direct TV.

Your business is greatly appreciated and we thank you for allowing us to
be of assistance to you. If you have any further questions or concerns,

They're not free?

I get my 2 HR20's this coming weekend and the new 5LNB dish - total cost $19.99 shipping.

I had previously told them that I purchased the 2 HD TiVos I have after I had been told that the locals for the Washington DC area would be in the top 12 markets that would have HDs in MPEG-2. That never came to pass. A year ago they told me I'd have to pay $299 per DVR to get the new HD DVR. I told them I would switch providers before I'd give them $598 for DVRs to replace my $1500 investment. They marked the account as getting two free DVRs if I chose to add them in the future.

They lived up to their committment and I have the install scheduled for this coming Saturday - just in time for all of the new HD channels.

I spend 300 dollars on the Tivo Box like 2 or three months before the new box came out. Thats bullshit that I am left out in the cold dispite the fact I have the highest directv package and pay my bill on time every month... I should get the new HD channels

call them and what?? Pay for another box? I shouldent have to pay for anything...... Once they knew they werent going to support the TIVO boxes they shouldent have even sold them..

Say "CANCEL" at the voice prompt.
Politely tell them you're probably switching to cable due to high up front costs to upgrade to an MPEG4 DVR.

BTW, the picture quality is FANTASTIC. As good or better than any HD over the air antenna broadcasts.

The few stretched 4:3 to 16:9 channels will likely diminish. ESPN did this when they first went live, but are now original aspect ratio. And this is not a fault of Directv. They only pass along the program format in the same aspect ratio the networks are sending it in.

i got free hddvr

I called, said cancel, talked to the nice guy, told him I was going to cancel because I could get an hddvr from comcast or dish for free. The guy told me he would be happy to give me an hd dvr for $19.99 and then waive the install fee and shipping of $19.99 in order to keep me as a customer. All I had to do was sign over my first born for 2 years!! I said sure and signed off. 2 days later the new dish and receiver was installed and I've been happy ever since.
