$120 rebate with two year contract, but no subsidies...yet....

As strongly hinted at previously, Dell last week began offering U.S. buyers of its Inspiron Mini 9 netbook the option of built-in HSDPA mobile broadband from AT&T. Customers who buy the 3G-enabled netbook have the option of a $120 mail in rebate if they're willing to sign a contract for a new two year AT&T DataConnect Service plan starting at $60/month. There's still no option to heavily subsidize the netbook for a long-term deal (a $100 netbook sounds nice) -- something that's increasingly popular overseas and was predicted by Michael Dell a month ago.

AT&T plans are pretty crappy, too. For $60 you get 5gb everything else billed per kb. And thats the "best" plan they offer.

I was looking at their data plans, another funny one:

PDA Plan (unlimited) $30
PDA Plan w/ tethering (5GB) $60

So "unlimited" as long as the device can't pull too much data. Good going Ma Bell The New AT&T.

Too expensive

As other reviewers (and even Intel) has noted, these are not good for daily use. At $399 + $125 - $120 = $404 they are simply too expensive and will fill a niche rather than replace notebooks.

I really want to replace my Thinkpad, but I saw one of these and a 9" screen is just too small. I think a 12" screen would be just about perfect for me and the smallest I could use regularly.

That's why I don't get these netbook things people are hawking. For $100 more I can get a laptop that is pretty good for daily use. Sure it's not the most powerful, but it damn sure ain't as hobbled as these netbooks.

The netbooks are nothing but the "look at how small it is" product. Where everybody stands around and says ewww and ahhhh. But it has a very short lifespan.

Re: Too expensive

I don't really get netbooks either. My iPhone can mostly do everything that things netbooks can - But it's cheaper, smaller, and it's my cellphone. Sure, I can't write a paper, or write code on my iPhone - But if I was doing that i'd bring along my normal laptop anyways.

Re: Too expensive

It's interesting, the thing I use a netbook for is indeed writing, which is totally impossible on an iPhone (well, I can't speak to the iPhone, but I assume it's not any better than the iPod touch in this regard)- I do have a normal laptop, but the savings in weight makes it worth it to me...

Exactly. The Netbooks (9" and under) are too small to be of any real use (like writing a paper) and are way to cumbersome to carry around unlike an iPhone.

But perhaps there is a use for them that all of us are just not seeing?

My last travel notebook was a 12.1". I'm trying to replace it with a 10" MSI netbook. I've never seen a netbook in person so it will be interesting when my arrives on Wed. I do have an ATT 3G usb stick which I'm using now. An intergrated system would be nice.

My netbook was subsidezed by Microsoft. Via their cashback system

What needs to be done...

at&t has a potential gold mine with these dells and other potential notebooks. Treat the service like wifi at coffee shops. Charge $5 or $10 for 24 hrs of access. I would go for that more than I would a 2 year contract. Not to mention, they would make even more money than $60 a month would...

Re: What needs to be done...

Wimax chips will be put with the Intel Centrino 2 processors and there will be a 24 hour day passes and no contract service plans available. I expect all the 3G notebook bundles to come rolling out more and more everyday. We might also see carriers start subsidizing equipment cost in exchange for 2 year contracts. See what competition brings

That's all well and good but. I'm already paying out the nose for home service. Anything north of 20 a month is a no go in this economy for the benefit of using my netbook or notebook in open location. I could see taking a netbook to a cafe and doing email ect. But at 60+ with data caps no thanks. Until they get it though their heads all the wireless companies will be missing the real boat.

Price Lie

Let's not get in the habbit of calling a $199 laptop a $100 Laptop, like the Cable companies Considered "Unlimited" as 250-350 Gigabytes per month. Otherwise we might as well change the value of $1.99 to a $1, and just get it over with. This is the kind of Industry backed BS that I and I'm guessing just about everybody else really hates.

Say what it's going for NOT what you want people THINK it's going for, then switch up the price. There's a difference between false advertising, and Misleading tactics, and were setting ourselves up to blur that line even more.
