DTV transition arrives this weekend...
06:15PM Thursday Jun 11 2009 by Karl Bode
tags: fcc · stats
According to the latest data from Nielsen, there's still 2.8 million completely and totally oblivious Americans who aren't prepared for this weekend's digital TV transition cut over date. That means about 2.5% of the television market have been unaware of the endless barrage of media surrounding the switch, and weren't helped by the four month delay or the FCC's massive transition efforts. The National Association of Broadcasters pegs the number a little lower, at around 1.75 million completely and totally oblivious households. Nielsen says the four month delay did reduce the number of completely and totally oblivious households by half.

Its about time

I'll be glad once its finally over (I've been hearing commercials for +1 year now).
I'm ready to cut off TWC after June 12 (2 boxes on DTV work with 50-54 channels already with rooftop stealthtenna).

What I 'really' wonder is - how many will 'lose' their DTV channels as they forget (or don't know how) to rescan the channels. I expect a phone call from my +80 year old inlaws when the local channels shuffle from UHF to VHF.

Yea! No more crawls and commercials about the switch to digital.

Boo! We now get to hear stories about the dumbasses who didn't pay attention and are complaining.

This is all FUD - my locals all switched with the Feb transition to digital as none of the stations wanted to pay to maintain dual boadcasts. Now mind you we only have 300K people in the area but still, no rioting in the streets, not even a peep.

Please just get this over with. Our locals pulled the Analog plug last Feb. No Earthquakes, floods, or Lightning, Life as we know it carried on quite nicely. Sooo glad this happening this time.

Re: See charts here on breakdown of those not ready

The 55+ are the most prepared. Might it be that the younger generations don't care about watching OTA broadcasts? It would be interesting to see how Nielsen calculated their stats.

Exactly. If you havea TV but don't have cable and you don't have converter box but you don't watch TV anyways, supposedly you're "not prepared". Some people just use a TV for watching DVDs and/or playing games.

Perhaps, their minds have been dulled...

by watching too much TV. Sounds like a self-correcting malady to me.

Totally Clueless

I think it would be safe to bet that if they are still clueless about the transition Friday night, they are clueless about many other things as well. TV is probably the least of their problems! I would be more worried about these folks driving and trying to cook for themselves. Then again, somebody has to keep the emergency room's in business

Those lucky few...

2.8 million who completely and totally do not watch TV and really don't care whether it's analog or digital. (Yeah, Nielsen says they're in "the television market"... Nielsen is so clueless about who is and who isn't in the market.)

Good on them.

Zubenelgenubi

@qwest.net

Re: Those lucky few...

And there's those of use who wouldn't give Nielsen the time of day, or tell them the truth if they pressured.
I don't care if it's analog or digital. I don't give a damn about HD, either. I listen to the TV while I'm reading or on the computer. As long as I can see instant replay, I'm happy.

I don't even listen to it in the background. I honestly don't even have cable hooked up in my room, on purpose. I mean, it's in there, but I have no use for it.

And they know this how?

As if they could really know this many people aren't prepared. I'm sure there are many who aren't ready, but I bet they have heard about it. It would have been there own choice to ignore it or just snooze.

Nothing against you jeffhambone, but the article you linked is one of the worse writing I've ever read. I won't comment on every bit, but I like the last paragraph. They say that "An estimate 9 percent of Americans are clueless about the transition.".

Where did they get their numbers?

Did they call millions of people and say something to the effect of
Nielson - "Hey, did you know that you'll lose analog TV signal this weekend?"
Callee - "Huh, lose my TV signal"
Nielson - *click* and add one more tally mark to the clipboard.

I mean, damn, they could've told em while they had them on the phone.

Guess it's not Grandma, after all...

If you believe Neilsen's numbers, it's not Grandma who isn't ready -- it's her grandchildren. OTOH, perhaps the grandchildren have all moved to Hulu and don't care about free OTA DTV.

Younger people are the biggest not ready.

Makes me wonder if the ones not ready simply don't care. Most people I know my age or younger couldn't care less about tv, not when they have the internet.

We MUST delay the transition

The only option at this point is to delay the transition until the government can inform those still unaware about the arrival of DTV, and provide means for the continuity of their television viewing. End TV inequality!!!

By delaying the switch, you are also putting the brakes on a lot of really good ideas (City-Wide Mobile Broadband Without Dead Spots, anyone?). I would like to refrence the quote in my siggy: "When it comes to technology, if you are not part of the steamroller, you are part of the road." 'Nuff Said.

Just do it already.

These are the people that are never going to get it, until you actually take it away from them. Anyone that hasn't gotten their decoder box by now either doesn't care, or will simply find out the hard way.

I betcha there will be people buying converterboxes on saturdaymorning.

RIP, Analog.

over exageratted number?

is this the number of just oblivious people? or the number of people they estimate are still OTA?

for OTA, i doubt that it's really that high what with low basic cable prices (not including the backwoods areas that dont have cable run to the houses or satellite).
