DSL Beating Cable in Subscriber AddsBut when will the two technologies break even? ( old news - 12:52PM Friday Dec 01 2006) tags: dsl · competition · business · cable · stats · worldFor at least the eighth time in the past 10 quarters, the baby bells have added more subscribers than the nation's largest cable providers, reports Light Reading. The biggest phone providers added 1.3 million broadband subscribers in the third quarter, compared to 1.2 million for the nation's largest cable providers. For the record, the U.S. has 51 million broadband users, 28.2 million cable customers (slightly less than 56%) and 22.7 million DSL customers (44%). There's been absurdly differing opinions on when exactly DSL will pull up alongside (or pass) cable in regards to total subscribers. Pew proclaimed that DSL was now even with cable in the States back in June, an analysis that Bruce Leichtman of Leichtman Research proclaimed was "dead wrong." IGI recently predicted that DSL totals would surpass cable by the end of the year. Apparently none of the industry's experts actually know, so "soon" seems like a reasonable answer based on consistent strong DSL subscriber additions. Globally, DSL dominates: nearly 70% of the world's residential broadband users are on a DSL line. Related:- Wednesday Evening Links

| probably due to price I'm up for renew on my DSL (DSL Extreme), and have been thinking about going to cable for reliability, and a little kick in speed.
DSL Extreme: $19.95 for 1500/384, $24.95 for 3000/512, $34.95 for 6000/768
Time Warner: $34.95 for 1500/384, $44.95 for 6000/512
I'll keep my extra $$ for now. Even though AT&T's lines may not be the greatest (+12k feet from CO, no VRAD coming to my area in the next year), TimeWarner/Comcast lines in my area are just as old, and there's been many issues with TW/Comcast switchover.

| Re: probably due to price I agree. Basic DSL service here can be had for $12.95 per month. Not real fast by state-of-the-art standards to be sure, but for many, many users, 768 down is plenty fast enough. Price will always be a determining factor for many. -- ...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones? | |

| Well for those "cablevision" customers on the east coast, they are offering 30M dn and 5M up for slightly over double the cost of DSL's 1.5M lines. And if they can do it all the cables companies could.. just a matter of need. Out here cable has allways put it to the dsl companies, unfortunatly for those "file shares" you will get your bandwidth cut if they feel your "serving". | |

FiOS doesn't come close to the # of DSL and # of Cable providers. Either does Sat or wifi. So just looking at the DSL and Cable stand point, 44% are DSL and 56% are Cable. -- YourIP.US - Quickly Locate Your IP!

| I'd get DSL if... I didn't have to get dial-tone. By the time you add in the dial-tone costs with the DSL costs, and match the speed I have with TW it isn't any cheaper than what I pay now.
Oh, and don't forget all the fees and taxes.

| Re: I'd get DSL if... You can get Digital Phone for $39.95 when you bundle RR/Cable/Phone.
And ATT's Unlimited Long Distance is capped at a set of minutes I believe its something along the lines of 2,000 minutes per month. I was kicked off that plan with ATT back when they were SBC for calling my brother and nephew in Cali.
They said I talked to much and I had to pay for 25cents per minute.

| Re: I'd get DSL if... I think Cable gives you the better deal all the way around if you know who to talk to when you sign up. But thats the thing with Cable. Each rep offers something different usually when you call in and you never usually can get the same promo rate as someone else and they change all the time. But you can always call in and get a new price when you see a good deal without having a contract of any sort.
with TWC i pay $108 per month after taxes-
Expanded Cable (2-77) $38, RoadRunner Standard $27, and Digi Phone $36. Digi Phone includes, US, Canada and PR.

| Cable vs DSL Seems to me the cable ISPs could easily offer a lower tier service to compete directly against DSL. Say like 1.0 or 1.5/368. They could offer slightly more speeds for same price. Unfortunately many current cable subs might drop to lower tier pricing as well.
I wonder how many people would simply drop POTS altogether and go cell phone if they were offered a much lower tier and cheaper cable broadband option?

| switching I'm in the process of switching from Comcast to AT&T/SBC/PacBell or whatever they call themselves these days DSL. Why? Because Comcast has frequent outtages that last around 1-3 minutes and they never come close to their advertised speeds of 8mbps. I get maybe 4 most of the time, never 8. When I used DSL in the past, it has been much more stable, rarely had an outtage (or never?), and generally meets your speed expectations. I live 5,000 feet from a CO so DSL should work fine for me.
I think in general that if you live within 10,000 feet of a CO you should try DSL and if you live further than 10, 11, or 12,000 feet from a CO or RT (abbreviations for a DSL "hut") you should probably go with cable.
