Cable companies advertising a simpler billing experience
10:32AM Monday Oct 06 2008 by Karl Bode
tags: Fiber · competition · trouble · bundles · Verizon FIOS
We've previously noted that if Verizon FiOS has a weak spot, it's the service's billing, which frequently contains errors that are sometimes impossible to correct. According to the St. Petersburg Times, customers are getting annoyed with multi-page FiOS bills they say they can't understand, and which rarely are the same amount from month to month. Both Time Warner Cable and Bright House networks are taking advantage of the complicated bills and hidden fees, by promising customers a simpler billing experience if they return. "Changes are coming," a Verizon spokesman tells the paper (a promise users have heard before). "And I think it will really be something our customers will really appreciate."

3rd month trying....

I'm on my 3rd straight month of an incorrect billing for my FIOS internet. The biggest issue is when you call them, every single employee has a different way of solving the problem. Every different way ends up not working properly.

Once they get the bill right, I have found that it stays correct and is no longer an issue.

HAHA! Agreed. I had an 8 month period of bad billing, but now have had a correct bill for about 7 months. I refuse to make any changes to my service, for fear it will start another fiasco.

Same thoughts here. My bill is never the same amount each month. No one can explain it.
Once I finally got them to stop charging me for the DCT 700 boxes which are free, my bill still varies by a few dollars each month.
I too am reluctant to make any changes because the "billing devil you know is better than the billing devil you don't"....

Same here. I am scared to death to even order a VOD movie for fear they will reinitalize my account and treat me as a new customer, a truly scary experience I never want to go through again.

I can vouch for this..I added HBO and Cinemax in Aug..my bill has been a disaster for 2 months. All my promo's are gone...spent about 3 hours on the phone trying to fix this...and I'm still at it..

Re: How else can they rip off the customer?

I have to say, when I had Comcast, my bill was the same every single month, no fail. Since having FIOS installed in 12/06, I have not received 2 bills that have been the same even though nothing changes. It might be .50 more this month than last, then next month it will .25 less. They have no explanation.

Re: How else can they rip off the customer?

I have comcast. When they introduced HD and I first ordered an HD box, it took them at least a year to get their story straight on how much HD cost. It was supposed to be $7 for the HD box. $6/month for a regular box.

Well when I ordered 2 boxes with 1 HD, they charged me $19. Every month I called, and every month they removed the extra charge only to put it back on the next month, and retroactively. It got the the point where around $60 would cycle off my bill one month, then back on next month with an extra $6.

The problem was they had deceptive advertising that confused their own workers. and HD box is not $7, its $13. To rent and HD box you must pay for a regular box, then pay for HD upgrade. Thats not how they list it. They list it as simply $7.

And don't get me started on my ATT ISDN billing nightmare. The fact that a residence had ISDN which was only handled by their business department caused an instant self-destruct to any billing agent I ever talked to...

VZ FiOS

@verizon.net

The taxes is what makes it not be exactly the same and up to a dollar or two difference from month to month. Other than that, every other charge SHOULD be exactly the same from month to month. If not, then you can join the crowd with billing issues.

Cable companies don't have many of the taxes that the telco companies do. Majority of the taxes are on the phone line which cable doesn't have since they are VoIP.

really. I've had Cablevision here in NJ for 10 years. And have never once had a billing issue. The bill is exactly the same every month.

I have added and removed services over that time and never had a billing issue. This VZ billing thing is the biggest reason I haven't switched to FiOS yet. Having dealt with VZ billing problems in the past for cell phones and landline - I wouldn't want to relive it again.

The thing I don't understand is why VZ has billing issues at all. They have had these billing systems in place forever. Phone co's which have been around for 100 years still haven't figured out how to bill properly?

Try $80 up or down. My FiOS billing problems were typically double billing or billing for services I no longer had like DSL.

I have never gotten a Fios statement

I have been a Fios customer for 6 months now, have never gotten a statement. They have been sure to debt my account, but I have never seen a bill.

Re: I have never gotten a Fios statement

I had the same problem for two years. I have all their services except their most important one, local landline phone. They refused to let me see my bills because I don't have their landline phone service. After my billing rates jumped dramatically this year, they finally met my demands and started letting me see my bills and access to my account online. They would only let me access my Internet account previously. About the price increase, they claimed to have notified me of the price increase, but I didn't receive that either. After being transferred to a few CSRs, they finally admitted that there was a system error, that's why I didn't get my notification to renew my contract.

Re: I have never gotten a Fios statement

They won't let me see my bill also. Funny when I had naked DSL I could see my bill, but I haven't seen a damn thing. They even told me they don't have to show me a bill. The owe me money for charging me for dsl after it was canceled. I wish could report them to my SCC regarding my money but DSL service doesn't fall under their jurisdiction.

I get a FIOS bill & don't have FIOS

I'm 4 hours from the closest FIOS. I'm so far out that Verizon won't even turn DSL on even though the remote is wired and has fiber to it.

Anyway, these idiots send me a FIOS bill every month even though all I have is POTS. They can't figure out how to tell the computers that I'm not a customer so they have to credit me every month.

Re: I get a FIOS bill & don't have FIOS

FYI, POTS lines run off FiOS ONT's. Your bill would not be any different. I dont understand why youre being credited ANYTHING every month.

skuv

@rr.com

Why...

can't ALL providers do this? :

Charge a SIMPLE flat rate.

Then take all of your franchise fees, taxes, etc out of that rate and don't tell the customer about it. Just do it.

Make the price simple and straightforward. Add on pay-per-views or whatever they bought extra for the month and you're done.

That way, it's a win-win. You hide your stupid taxes and fees from the customer, and they don't go crazy trying to read your bill.

SunCom Wireless did something similar for a while. If your cell phone plan was $39.99, you paid $39.99. Then they'd show you in the bill how much of the $39.99 went to taxes and fees. But you were only paying the flat rate.

My Verizon Wireless bill changes by a few cents every month, WHY?! Do tax rates and fees really change monthly?

Re: Why...

When telco's are no longer regulated .. or voIP gets regulated to pay the same taxes and fee's, you will see this happen.

skuv

@rr.com

Re: Why...

I think you misunderstand.

What I said had nothing to do with regulation or deregulation.

I simply asked for providers to charge a flat rate, and to HIDE the fees and taxes in the flat rate.

That way, customer billing is simplified for the customer.

I thought I explained it clearly, why the heck am I explaining it again?

Re: Why...

Why ? bc you still dont understand the situation ! POTS lines have to be taxed and voIP is NOT. POTS is not as profitable if both services are offered at $40 a month unlimited calling .. they are not on even playing ground. When all types of phone service are taxed evenly, then you can ask to hide the fee's and taxes.

Little common sense goes a long way.

You can't do that.

By law the telcos have to give you an itemized bill.

They simply collect taxes, they don't charge them, so they have to list them line by line.

why is it so hard to get bills correct?

I'm not a Fios customer, though I wish I were. I'm trying to understand why it seems to be such a hard thing for Verizon to bill each and every customer correctly! I mean if you're quoted a given price for your service(s), then add a bit for taxes, then shouldn't that be your flat rate each month? The company obviously knows how much they charge for each of their services, so why is it so hard to bill each customer correctly? I have Time Warner Cable Business class internet service, and since I got the service, I've been billed the exact amount I was told the service would cost each and every month. Now why is that so hard for Verizon to do with their Fios users? I have a backup DSL connection that cost a given amount. When that amount was adjusted due to increases in the taxes, my DSL provider notified me of this, and I was billed the exact new amount, no more, no less. If other companies can bill correctly, why is it so damn hard for Verizon to do so??

it has to be the billing system and the codes they use in it that cause the issues.

It's not the billing as such that is causing the problems, as far as I know.

It's the account setup. Verizon's computer systems or the reps using them can't seem to be able to set up the accounts correctly. This applies to new customers and changes to existing accounts.

My experience is probably typical:

I ordered 20/20 FIOS Internet first. They then convinced my wife that we should really get the phone service from them too, so we went with the Double Freedom Bundle (Internet + phone). So what happened...I got a 20/5 Internet account + phone service that made up the Double Freedom Bundle, but I also got a 20/20 Internet. Yep, they didn't transfer the existing Internet account to the bundle, but created a new Internet account for it. I was (am?) double billed for Internet. At some point they noticed this, and removed the second Internet account. Guess which one they removed? Yes, you got it right, the faster 20/20 account that I'd had to begin with.

Additionally we also added FIOS TV service a few weeks later (it wasn't available in metro NY in the beginning). I'm not quite sure how or if they screwed anything up with that one, but the bill sure as hell is still not right. This is 3 billing cycles in from the first service actication. The fourth bill is supposed to arrive within a week or two.

I'm still being overcharged! 6 MONTHS!

Look, I work at a bank. If we were pulling $10 out of your checking account each month, that would be robbery. I signed up for the 94.95 deal, but had to make an order change before the install (cablecard/port#). The rep said no problem, but it would be easier to cancel & resubmit the order, I got the same install date...
I've been over it with Verizon about 15 times. I got my free tv, I got my free digital adapters. But they still claim they have a 'system problem', which prevents them from rate adjusting other customers too. I think this is BS, in fact, I think they're financial statements are false if they are booking revenue improperly, so potentially this is financial fraud.

Re: I'm still being overcharged! 6 MONTHS!

I hate to pile on here, because that really doesn't get anywhere, but it's good to see that I'm not the only one with these problems.

I thought they had fixed my bill after 7 months or so, but alas, the next one came and it's still messed up. I too hate to order something new in fear of getting it all whacked out again. I wonder how much money they're losing just from this phenomenon itself.

Since my December/January install, I've had billing issues. I HATE looking at the bill every month. I never thought I'd do this, but I actually just paid an extra $11 they were overcharging me, just to get the bill back to even. The CS rep said if I paid it, then I would be billed correctly "to get rid of it" lol. Hmmm, let's see what happens next month.

No, that's not the only issue or amount that I've been having problems with. Too much to list.

I have to throw this in there as well. I get my CC billed for the service every month and this $11 was billed to me as "not paid" and "carried forward". How the hell would it not be paid if they have been billing my CC for many months before this bill came up?

Automatic billing and I didn't pay $11 of the $268 or whatever? lol wtf? And it was getting carried over every month and I was STILL getting automatic billing.
