In the recent 700Mhz auction, Cox Communications won 14 Block A and eight Block B licenses for bids totaling roughly $304 million. While Cox hasn't publicly stated what they plan to do with this spectrum, the geographic limitations of the spectrum mirrors their existing cable footprint -- leading to obvious speculation that the company will be offering wireless broadband before too long. Likely targets are their largest metro markets: San Diego, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Pensacola, Florida, and Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Cox this week confirmed that speculation
by stating the private cable company will be offering a wireless service that integrates their other services into one device. That's essentially what Cox tried (and failed) to accomplish through their "Pivot" partnership with Sprint. Cox didn't provide any time line for the new wireless service. Says Cox President Patrick Esser:
"I won't divulge too many secrets here, but we'll focus on providing simple calling plans, integrating all our services into one device with a consistent cross-platform interface; and making our content and applications mobile. "Wireless is straight from our offensive playbook," he said. "It's an important innovation, a logical business evolution, and will maximize the immense power of Cox's greatest asset the last mile of our robust broadband network."
According to Esser, the company plans to invest $500 million in wireless spectrum.
