Could a Cotton T-Shirt Someday Charge Your Cell Phone?
Researchers Say The Technology is Very Possible
by Karl Bode Thursday 12-Jul-2012 tags: wireless · hardware · wireless · cellular
Researchers at the University of South Carolina say they're developing a new technology that could turn the material in a cotton T-shirt into a source of electrical power. Researchers Lihong Bao and Xiaodong Li soaked a regular T-Shirt in a solution of fluoride, dried it and baked it at high temperature (without oxygen, to prevent charring or burning). The result was a fabric that under infrared spectroscopy was shown to have been converted from cellulose to activated carbon while retaining flexibility. That new material could then be used as a capacitor to store an electrical charge. More impressive, the researchers coated the individual fibers in the activated carbon textile with "nanoflowers" of manganese oxide, turning the T-shirt into a stable, high performance superconductor.

I'm Shocked!

Next up, placing a tiny device in our nostrils to create energy from our breathing.

Doh! Too late.

Interesting but many obstacles remain

The big ones that I see are:

How to get the charge into the cotton safely and then out of the cotton safely.

I mean I can just read the headlines now - "Man electrocutes himself while trying to charge his cellphone with his shirt"

Eh?
Maybe supercapacitor, not superconductor?

This is amazing!

I'm going to file this right next to all the other accomplishments that are going to revolutionize the world, like IBM's manipulation of individual atoms 20 years ago...

How do they look when wet?

How do they look wet on an otherwise attractive well endowed woman?

I was going to say something similar. Wasn't it quite a few years ago they tried saying wearing cotton underwear could cause cancer?
