Cooperative LinuxOpens source method for running Linux on Windows ( old news - 03:13PM Sunday Apr 11 2004) tags: softwareA trial version of a little-known Linux application called "CoLinux" was released recently. It is the first working free and open source method for optimally running Linux on Microsoft Windows natively as reported in this Linux World article. It's the work of a 21 year-old Israeli computer science student and some Japanese open source programmers; in Israel, analysts are already saying it could help transform the software world. The student, Dan Aloni, a graduate of an IDF computer unit, has developed a Linux application - called Cooperative Linux ("CoLinux" for short) - that is a port of the Linux kernel that allows it to run cooperatively alongside another operating system on a single machine. For instance, it allows one to freely run Linux on Windows without using a commercial PC virtualization software such as VMware, in a way which is much more optimal than using any general purpose PC virtualization software. A member of the international open source community, Aloni developed CoLinux along with several Japanese programmers, collaborating over the Net. They've written special core drivers for the host OS which modify the way the host OS receives notifications from the hardware - thus allowing both Operating Systems to coexist peacefully - and run at a decent speed as well. "As the trend is for Linux to take a more important role in organizations," Shemesh continues, "Aloni's development is extremely interesting. The question is how Microsoft will react and whether it will allow support for Windows systems if they have Linux systems installed on them." According to Haaretz.com that is also carrying details of this story, Microsoft has so far made no comment on Aloni's development. Related:- Zango (180Solutions) Closes Up Shop

In other word, if they can't buy Unix like all others technologies they loved in the past, they will try to eat it by integration. -- Jesus saves, but only Buddha makes incremental backups.

LoL.... I have a lot to learn about MS...
SFU... LoL... and if you told me to SFU what would that mean? I mean this is too funny!

1. In order to work, you have to create a Linux partion (can do so via the Sourceforge page for CoLinux.
2. Also need CygWin in order to run.
This port is not for the new user to Linux, and defiently has a curve, but will be great for using in multi environments that are being used in today's office world. -- One man's customer loyalty is another man's miguided arrogance.

1 edit | Once I downloaded and installed Microsoft Windows... (eerrrmmm, you CAN do that can't you?)
During the install, it burped and farted and told me that it needed a driver for my "Hotzy Snotzy Video Fartron" card, but it was only Windows version 0.98 an' Linux 0.98 had the drivers but this is Windows and another story all the same...
So, anyway... anyhow... I was frustraded and I hated Windows because that "Dollar" Bill guy ripped me off when I downloaded my free copy of Windows 0.98. I mean really, bandwidth costs money . So I'm pissed at Microsoft 'cause his free stuff won't run as good as that Linux stuff I paid $200.00 for... I think that is a damn shame and I think we should all write Steve and Dave about it ...
Honestly guys... try it, it's free. If you like it, fine. If you don't that is as fine but give us a break here...
IT IS FREE. YOU DIDN'T PAY $200.00 FOR IT... THE PRICE IS DOUBLING EVERY YEAR. LAST YEAR IT WAS $0.00... THIS YEAR IT IS UP TO $0.00... WHO KNOWS WHAT NEXT YEAR IS GOING TO BRING??? IT MAY DOUBLE AGAIN

| Re: Linux: Got Patience?? It bothers me when people try to tell everyone that something is not up to snuff when they don't even understand it. I hear the same old story repeatedly Windows is better than Linux/UNIX. Well unfortunately that is just not true. What is better for someone is not necessarily the same for someone else. If you are serving a small number of clients (a few hundred) then maybe Windows is your best bet. Allot of the smaller data centerers don't have the resources to keep a UNIX admin on staff and since Windows is easier to administer they opt for the MS route. Some other companies fall into the clutches of MS and can't get out because they become dependent on them. There are many reasons to use Windows.
But, if you are serving thousands upon thousands of clients and a reboot or complete system crash is just not acceptable then it's quite possible a Linux/UNIX solution is better. (Not saying that Linux/UNIX can't handle smaller jobs.)
Where I work we have just about everything. Windows, Linux, AIX, Solaris, HP-UX and NetWare among others. I have worked on just about everything (in the list) except for HP-UX. It's not the Linux/UNIX servers that we have to worry about. It's the Windows and NetWare servers that we have to watch.
We are migrating away from Windows right now (Well except for the Citrix servers.) and moving to Virtual Linux servers on a IBM Z series mainframe. Others are being migrated to AIX and Solaris. We find that under heavy load no mater what the Linux/UNIX box always comes out on top, both in reliability and speed. So that being said a Linux/UNIX environment is better for us.
Here is an example. We currently host 9500 active Lotus Notes mail databases on two UNIX servers with 6 x 550 MHz processors each. Before we migrated to UNIX we had 7 Windows servers with 4 x 1.3 GHz processors doing the same job.
Also looking into the direction of the Desktop take a look at Suse 9.x and what Novell is doing with Linux. (Specifically with Ximiam and NetWare.) On the server side, the new 2.6 kernel can handle a theoretical maximum of 256 processors with 64 way servers already in production (SGI). There are also 64 bit versions of Linux available.
You might just be surprised what has happened since the release of RedHat 7.2 in 2001. (There was never a RH 7.6)
So we have invested in Linux and UNIX and will continue to do so because FOR US (and not everyone else), Windows in just not in the same league. -- Welcome those that represent SCO. Direct them to the room that says /dev/null on it.

1 edit | Re: Linux: Got Patience?? Dude, you just restated the obvious - one size does not fit all. Hence, that is why I ended my posting with "Just my 2 cents". I particularly don't care for Linux and IMHO, Windows is the better system again, in MY (1 person here) opinion. HOWEVER, not everyone is going to see it that way and that is fine by me.
No matter how much you explain how Windows is not the superior system, point out "facts" to back it up, post links and so forth, you still won't hear me saying that I prefer Linux because I (again, one person here) love Windows over any other OS.
Again, 1 person here, just MY (again, one person here) 2 cents.
P.S. It was Red Hat 7.2. That shows how much I care for Linux, not to even remember the version I tried to install. Just one person's experience. -- "We are going to Linux. Then we are going to Unix. Then on up to Mac. Then on to DOS. Then we are going to Dell. Then we are going to Microsoft to take back our desktops! YEEEEAAHHHHH!!" - Howard Dean on Technology

Facts:
1) Windows costs more than Linux. 2) It takes about twice the processing power to do the same job with windows, usually. 3) Patches get out the door quicker... 4) Did I say windows costs more than Linux?
You are the one who wrote a about a painful experience you had some two or three years ago with a non-existant version of linux.

I prefer Windows over Linux. Some people seem like they are taking my disliking of Linux to heart (I hate Linux! I hate a Linux installation! I hate Linux! Linux sucks! Linux sucks BIG TIME! Windows rule! There, happy?)
Like Nextel, I am DONE with this thread. Happy surfing.
Well, replied. Personally, I never liked Red Hat (but that is just me). A while back I stopped in the bookstore and got a copy of the "Official Fedora Companion", which comes with two CD's and installed Fedora on a couple of systems. Trivial install, for me. You are right that Linux installs were difficult in the "old days" so were MS installs, when you think about it.... same problems too.... drivers mostly.
Anyway, next time you've got an old box and feel like trying out Linux or BSD try them again. They are both much improved.
Good luck. -m- -- Funny, I guess that old war horse was right, he said, "Isn'tthat why we did it? So nobody HAD to care."

I say leave the PC, Mac and Linux news to those sites. This site should focus on its mission: broadband information.
