Still waiting on territory wide dry loop DSL
(old news - 05:18PM Monday Aug 13 2007)
tags: prices · business · AT&T DSL Service
In order to gain government approval for its acquisition of BellSouth, AT&T conveniently authored their own merger conditions (pdf). Among them was the promise that they'd offer $10 DSL and "naked" (aka standalone, no landline) DSL service territory-wide.

While AT&T does now offer $10 768kbps DSL to comply, they neither announced or advertised the price point in the hopes that nobody would notice. AT&T's new CEO says they don't advertise it because nobody wants it.

As for dry loop DSL, the company had twelve months from the date of merger approval to offer it, so before year's end they will unveil 768kbps dry loop DSL for $20. Some naked DSL is offered now, but the deals aren't consistent across service regions.

For instance in May, users in BellSouth territory were told they could order naked DSL if they bundled AT&T wireless service. As of this month it appears that users on Ultra or faster tiers can now get naked DSL (click for prices) if they call up and ask for "bundle 96."

Click for full size
AT&T already has to offer naked DSL in some markets to comply with conditions of the SBC acquisition of AT&T, but charges customers a dollar more for it than they charge for their DSL & landline bundle. AT&T at the time said setting that price was "a way to let customers know that buying several services at the same time is always the best value."

The company tells the Chicago Tribune that they're trialing another naked DSL variant aimed at college students in Austin, Chicago and Jacksonville. Users in those markets can get 1.5Mbps naked DSL for $23.99 a month, or $19.99 a month if you bundle wireless service. AT&T tells the paper the same thing they told USAToday last January: territory-wide $20 naked DSL is coming:
"AT&T will launch a stand-alone DSL service for under $20 a month later this year to comply with that pledge, said Cara Birch, a company spokeswoman. That service will feature speeds of 768 kilobits a second, which is half as fast as the 1.5-megabit-per-second speed offered now. But AT&T says it is investigating stand-alone DSL service as a marketing strategy."
The merger condition notes that they won't have to offer naked DSL service for speeds higher than 768kbps, or for more than 30 months. Also like the $10 DSL, they're under no obligation to announce or market it.

Re: Qwest

Actually, no, not all phone companies were part of AT&T. There are still many independent phone companies, some as small as a few hundred lines.

Big geographically. But in population covered they are smaller than the other telcos. Verizon has much less territory, but more population in the N.E. Corridor.

With a lower density population, Qwest's cost per user are higher than the other telcos.

Qwest 15 million landlines
Verizon 30 million landlines
AT&T 32 million landlines

That map is misleading. It makes it appear as though Qwest is the only phone company in say, Washington, or that AT&T is the only phone company in California, when Verizon has territories in both places!

I agree... however, big corp gets its way.
With the exception that this is a legal agreement, you're typically hard up to find the 'lite' versions of cable Internet either unless you threaten to leave.

Word of mouth works better... I've been telling everyone I know that can't afford the other levels of service about this level of service.

ATT must hate me.

Why would any sane business advertise the fact that you can purchase LESS of their services?

They make enough. All those BS phone taxes goes in someone's pocket. If I made that much, I would cut everyone else a break and offer naked DSL for $10. Get rid of dialup and focus resources on broadband.

If they were more competitive with Comcast and offered the speed I wanted at about the same price point, I might be tempted to switch.

Your World Delivered..Highly Unlikely

Just another way of showing that it's not my way delivered it's at&t's ways delivered. Have to love the comment that the $10 dsl was not advertised since no one would want it. It's more like at&t doesn't want anyone to have it. What a bunch of morons at this company. How much worse can at&t get. This goes to show all they care about is $$$$$.

Every company is out to make money. It just seems at&t does every little thing it can to make the most. Like their Uverse development with copper instead of fiber all the way. They are more concerned with pleasing the stockholders than pleasing the customer.

Re: Your World Delivered..Highly Unlikely

In this day and age, companies answer to the stockholders, not the customer. The only thing the customer serves is as the well from which to draw the money the stockholders demand. As long as the well doesn't dry up, they will draw from it until it does.

At some point, like the oil industry, there is going to come a time when that well dries up, and the company will move on in search of another profitable deposit. Environmental or economic impact be dammed.

It's interesting that they love to advertise on broadcast TV the exact same package for a low $19.95 and brag it's not an introductory price. Now let's see, no one will want 768kbs down for 10 bucks but hey, they might want the same speed for 20 bucks. Naw, we don't see through that. Fooled us completely.

That map is quite accurate. It is the RBOC map, not a LEC map. ATT offers services in cross areas as well. LEC =! RBOC; but, RBOC==LEC.

It's my understanding that AT&T....

doesn't advertise the $10 deal because they promised investors after it came out that they wouldn't put a penny toward visibility of a mandated money losing product.

Customers don't want it ......

This is exactly the kind of Bell-think that got them into this predicament in the first place. The telcos KNOW what us customers want, and if we don't, they (t) will be glad to tell us.

darn

Well, I wish they would offer it here...

At one point I was mad at Cox for getting better upload than download... 500kbps down, 1000kbps up... kind of backwards...

Anyway, I called up ol' ma bell to see what they could offer, just because I was curious. NO, absolutely NO chance of getting JUST DSL from them... I was told I HAD to buy phone service... which, if added to the cost of regular 1.5Mbps DSL, was far and above what Cox charges for 'regular' (preferred) internet - now at somewhere around 7-8Mbps down/512kbps up...

They really should be able to sell me whatever internet service I can get at my location at a reasonable price MINUS the freaking phone service. If they could offer 1.5Mbps for ~$10, that'd be fine. 3Mbps service at ~$20 would also be nice... I might consider it at that price...

Oh well, they obviously don't care about actually doing this for people, so they'll not get a cent from me for their services. ...Guess my cell provider has to pay them if I call landlines, but hey, I'm not directly giving them any money.

DSL, esp. 1.5Mbps plans, have been around this town for almost a decade now... I fail to see why 1) price hasn't dropped much, 2) you can't get it without phone service.

Cox, meanwhile, has steadily been upping their speeds AND kept the price at ~$40 consistently. Started at ~3Mbps down, now it's at 10-12Mbps to some places, plus the "powerboost" makes for a connection that AT&T would have to BEG me to leave ...I guess the way to gain me as a customer would be cheap DSL without a freaking phone, contract, deposit, install fee, etc. etc. etc.

Try online. Here in Ohio they claimed that it was a special department that handled that but if you go online you have the option to enter in your address to see if you can get the service.

Great $10 backup

Been paying $10.95 for years for a dialup backup for my Comcast/Adelphia.
Also use it on service calls for checking dialup accounts or modems.
Got the $10.95 cancelled when I got the $10 DSL.
Saving .95 AND have DSL and dialup as a backup for my cable.
I've also managed to get the "term agreement" DSL for a lot of my older customers still using AOL, NetZero, etc.

Re: at&t dry loop? hah

I use Comcast now but Verizon offers up to 3mbps/768kbps (I got 2.8mbps/730 kbps) dry loop DSL in Baltimore for $34.95 per month for dry-loop compared to $29.95 per month for the same speed bundled with dialtone. Cavalier offers dry loop at "up to 10mbp" (more like 6mbps/850kbps in my neighborhood) for $40.00 per month.
